Received paper tickets in the mail today. They (and another piece of mail) both came with a postmark from Monday with a completely different town.
Wonder if my benefits pack is also on the same detour. Three mail days left to get a parking pass useable for the first game.

Ok let’s do minutes!
As always, not easy.
30 Leon Bond 30 Tytan Anderson 30 Jacob Hutson 25 Trey Campbell 20 RJ Taylor 15 Cael Schmitt 13 Kyle Pock 10 Schwieger 10 Hornseth 10 Wes Rubin 7 Weisbrod
Maybe I have Leon and Tytan too low.
The PG battle will be fun. liked what I saw of Cael, but also liked what I heard about RJ from JW’s recent podcast.
I could be higher than I should on Schwieger. I hope not because I do think he has high potential.

Schmitt 18
Pock 18
Weisbrod 12
Hornseth 10
Adds up to 202 to accommodate the inevitable OT here and there. I feel like I'm a bit low on Weisbrod and Pock but I don't know where you find any more minutes for them. Everything we've heard about Rubin at this point always mentions inconsistency and that's just flat not going to work on a roster full of older guys.

Current college students will be way more into relevant music than what the band plays. But, at the same time, it doesn't have to be an either or, this can be a good thing all around.
Also of note, the DJ is a UNI alum as well. Super cool!

I attended a Kansas State game in Manhattan, KS last year. They had a DJ and it was really good, even during Spring break. I love bands, but it was better to have less band. It may have been the best college basketball stadium experience I've had apart from the game itself (which was horrible).

I think maybe this is what it looks like early, but you have to play Rubin at some point. He's just too talented, and we are going to need the offense off the bench. I think Schwieger, Pock, and Schmitt's come down a bit in this scenario and Rubin fills in some. Rubin and Hornseth are most likely going to be the guys that give Hutty a rest too.Originally posted by BCPanther View Post

I think Pock's minutes are directly correlated to how he's shooting the ball. If he goes through a slump like last year, he's a bit of a liability everywhere else. I will say the dude looks like he has bulked up a ton this offseason. I also think Weisbrod is going to end up getting more minutes.
Pretty weird territory to have so many unknowns, but I'm excited. I have the Prowl keg to pick up tomorrow for basketball season (and the last half of football season). Lets go!

Taylor, Pock, Schwieger and Hornseth more, Hutson, Schmitt and Rubin less.Originally posted by sivert View PostOk let’s do minutes!

I'm not sure that Hutty can handle 30 min a night from a conditioning aspect, and Schmitt will just be defensive spells. I was always a little skeptical on Wes, and it sounds like he hasn't made the best impression on the staff so far. Hopefully that changes over time.
We'll really need to rely on RJ early on until Max is up to speed, but that may take a while. I'd be surprised if Schwieger doesn't carve out a sizeable role. He's a 6'7'' wing who can really shoot it. In the Valley, that's rare. Pock is a Jake type of player. He'll get his minutes.
Bond is the wildcard. If he's special, this season can be special. If he's not, it won't.

My best guess for minutes
Anderson 29
Bond 28
Campbell 28
Taylor 27
Hutson 20 (Liked mentioned earlier he isn't a 30 minute a night guy every game, there will be some but overall we will be best if he's at around 20, and we will go small sometimes as well)
Schmitt 15
Schwieger 13
Weisbrod 11 (When he get's healthier he could get more)
Pock 12
Hornseth 11
Rubin 6 (I think he gets more and more time as the season goes on)

We are starting the year at number 7 in the mid major 25 poll, Gonzaga is number 1, which why they are included is beyond me. Here are the other opponents on our schedule.
4 Bradley
12 UC Irvine
18 Milwaukee
I know it is a preseason poll but it is good to see some of our opponents in it.
RV Montana
RV Drake
RV Murray State
RV Indiana State
Personally I think Montana could win the Big Sky so they make sense, I don't know what to think about Drake, they won't be bad, but I don't think they will be good either, Murray State might be ok, Indiana State will struggle, but they were 25th in someones poll.

Jake has raved about the shape that Hutty is in, I think he's going to surprise you guys and be a 25-30 minutes every night kind of guy, unless there's foul trouble. I do believe Rubin will ultimately earn some spot minutes, but Hornseth came in and took that backup spot by all accounts. He's really gonna have to work to take it back.

I think it will depend on foul trouble and match-ups. If teams go smaller we could see Tytan or Bond playing inside like Isaiah Brown did a few years ago. Other games he may be asked to go more.Originally posted by Wxcpanther View PostJake has raved about the shape that Hutty is in, I think he's going to surprise you guys and be a 25-30 minutes every night kind of guy, unless there's foul trouble. Gonzaga is in the CollegeInsider poll because of the conference they are in. That publication rates teams in 24 mid-major conferences (excluding the Money Conferences and a few others, like the Mountain West) of the 32 total leagues. Next year the Zags won't be in the mid-major poll since they are joining the new Pac-12 conference.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostWe are starting the year at number 7 in the mid major 25 poll, Gonzaga is number 1, which why they are included is beyond me. I understand that bands (marching for football and pep for basketball) are a massive part of the college tradition and atmosphere. However, it is 2024/2025 and we (most bands) are playing the same set list that has been played for 20-30 years. Seven Nation Army banged as a song (still does) and pep band song when it came out 21 years ago at this point. It's still probably in the top 5 nationally for most played pep band songs. Sweet Caroline, Hey Song, Shake it Off, Sugar Sugar, SportsCenter Theme, Don't Stop Belivin', Hey! Baby, Pretty Fly, We're Not Gonna Take It, Eye of the Tiger, Jungle Boogie, Happy, All Star, etc. make up probably 75% of pep band songs nationally on any given night.Originally posted by UNIdad View Post

The band builds a special atmosphere and connection, but come 2024 unless you have a spectacular band - large numbers, super tight marching formations, super tight timing for drums and all other instruments, every single person is on pitch with their notes, etc. you need to add more to the atmosphere. Unless your band is filling the entire arena with sound playing the same 7 songs year after year starts to take away from it. The majority of college bands outside of the power schools, who have as many band/music majors as schools like UNI have in some of our top majors, don't have the resources, time, or talent to keep marching and pep band fresh. The directors are still doing their job at a fairly high level, but they aren't able to update, compose, and implement new/popular songs at the rate the larger/band-heavy schools (HBCUs) do. The band members don't have time to learn to play new songs proficiently and consistently. They all learn the foundational songs of what a pep band is, and played in high school, and play them on repeat. The difference between the songs for HS and college pep band would be having 2 or 3 parts as opposed to 1 for an instrument to add "depth" to the sound. It sounds better/more full, but it's still the same songs.
A DJ is a massive win when partnering with the band correctly. Hopefully, Dr. Franklin and the facilities team will let him use the sound system and space of McLeod properly. We can stop playing songs at the same volume car repair shops have TVs in their waiting rooms watching Judge Brown reruns.
