  • 2024-25 Basketball Discussion

Media day was today. A few bullets from Jake:
    1. If we played a game today, he'd start RJ, Campbell, Bond, Tytan and Hutson. Schmitt, Schwieger and Pock first off the bench
    2. Hornseth will play. The two walkons will Redshirt
    3. Weisbrod still a bit behind due to the injury over the summer
    4. Said the philosophy of recruiting high school players won't change but they also know they'll have to be active in the portal in the spring
    5. Effusive praise for Dr Franklin in getting them a little more money for an extra buy game and no pressure to take a buy game. It was also a contact of hers that started conversations on the Wichita series.
    6. Wazzu game happened after they were in scramble mode when the MTE went from 3 games to 2. The original contract with ESPN was for 3 games
    7. Thinks the league will remain strong even with the portal. Thinks that the new coaches in the league will bring new energy and will be successful once they get their feet under them
    8. Absolutely giddy when he mentioned the 3 HS kids they're going to sign in November
    9. Expect to play less road games going forward. It's obvious the metrics reward beating teams you should beat by large margins and they don't reward you for playing road games.
    10. He hears everybody. 8 years without an NCAA Tournament feels like 80. Have to continue playing best basketball in February/March but pre-christmas has become more important. Have to be ready to go from the jump. No time to gel anymore like the power programs get.
That's it for now. I assume we'll see stuff from players over the next few days.

    Oh. Forgot one thing.

Scrimmages with North Dakota this weekend in Minneapolis and with Wisconsin (again) in Platteville next weekend.

Good stuff BC, any comments on Rubin?

I was thinking he was a strong candidate tobbe in the top 8 rotation (unless I missed another injury setback as I don't follow this as close as many on this forum does).

        Thanks!

Mentioned him in passing but certainly gave the impression that Hornseth and Weisbrod were 9 and 10 right now and probably in that order until Weisbrod is fully healthy.

            New whites.

Same script 'Northern Iowa' from 2022 with the correct number font and UCLA style striping on the shorts. No names on back.

I don't love them design wise and I greatly dislike when we go with 'Northern Iowa' instead of 'UNI' or 'Panthers'.

I know the purple and silver script 'Panthers' are still in the rotation and we should be do for new purples and I'm sure we'll have a black alternate of some sort.

I thought this year was going to feature open (ticketed) scrimmages?

He also talked about how skilled Rubin is. Said that Ty and Hutty have a hard time stopping him in practice, but it looks like he just needs to get his conditioning and body at a place where everyone is more comfortable.

Really feels like Jake loves Schmitt and Hornseth. Sounds like Cael has been a beast on defense and he's a lot better offensively than they initially expected.

I feel like Hornseth has had the same consistent praise since they signed him. He's a big kid who can handle the physicality and has great feet so he can guard multiple spots. They are also confident in his ability to score at multiple levels. Seems like he might be first off the bench when Hutty needs a rest.

They tabled it for next year. I think they're coming at that point.

He came in at 230 pounds. Big deal when we get a kid that doesn't need weight at 6-9.

                        - You can really feel how much Jake likes working with Dr. Franklin. He has been very complimentary of her and that was an interesting note about the Wichita series

                        - I laughed out loud when he talked about the 3 kids coming in next year. All three are already so polished and skilled.

                        - Certainly feels like Schweiger will come in for Bond or Campbell, and Pock will come in for Tytan as it currently stands. This is obviously all matchup dependent too, but it was interesting to hear some of the lineup and rotation news.

Is there anyone on the Virginia roster who UNI recruited? How that Bennett is retiring. I heard we have someone on the roster now who could do some undercover tampering
