  • State of the Program

This discussion is happening in a number of game threads so I thought I'd create a post to keep it all here. I don't think many people are happy with where things are at right now. We have lost two very winnable Valley games in a row. At times we look like the best team in the Valley and at times we look like anyone could beat us. The inconsistency is pretty maddening as we have a front court who are veterans and our now starting point guard is also a veteran and our staff has been in place for awhile now. I'll give my .02 on why we're here:

    1. Troy Dannen - He really screwed us coming off of the Sweet 16 year. Nearly all of the money that came in was allocated elsewhere instead of the basketball program. I understand that he had an entire department to run, but that was a time that if we had gone all-in we wouldn't be sitting where we are today. We needed a basketball practice facility 15 years ago. We had the community support and the donors willing to get it done. Instead we made incremental facilities upgrades and paid our coaches. As we're now seeing, facilities run the show in college athletics. There are up and coming coaches every single year in nearly every sport who can do a great job. Sure you'll miss on some, but not pouring every penny we had into basketball at the time was a huge swing and miss.

    2. David Harris - He might be the worst AD hire that UNI has ever had. It blows my mind how Tulane hired him, but thank god they did. Megan has done more in six months than he did in his entire tenure here. He was supposed to be a fundraising guru from Iowa State, instead we hear stories of Farley, Jake and other coaches handling everything themselves. I'm not sure how it's possible but he pushed our athletics backwards even further.

    3. Recruiting - This has been a major issue these last few years however I believe we're finally righting the ship here. NIL changed the game entirely and I think it took us a few years to adjust. Tuttle and G have done a fantastic job in getting a better caliber of athlete to UNI and the relationships Jake has are still paying dividends. While we had the momentum after our big run in 2010 we had a few years where we were able to get some guys we typically wouldn't get. Washpun, Jesperson, Morgan, etc. Iowa and Iowa State were both hitting the out of state recruits pretty hard and we had a great pipeline coming in from Minnesota and Wisconsin thanks to Kyle Green. We also have had some close losses in recruiting. We all know about Doug McDermott, but I'm not sure people realize how close Austin Reaves, Tyrese Haliburton, Jarrod Uthoff and Will Tschetter were to becoming Panthers. We did this in spite of having some of the worst facilities in the Valley. I believe if we had focused on improving facilities we would have landed at least one of these guys if not all four. G and Tuttle are recruiting competitive kids who can play at a high-level. Those are the kids who build a program up and get that momentum back. If you want to get excited, go watch some highlights of our kids coming in next season. It could be one of the best classes we've ever signed.

    4. Injuries - They happen on every team but UNI has been hit pretty hard these last few years. Austin Phyfe's COVID issues were an absolute killer to those teams. Tywhon Pickford was a monster before he hurt his shoulder and was never the same. AJ having his double hip surgery and missing an entire season. Born getting beat up (somewhat predictable but still happened) hurt us. These were all key contributors for the program, not just bench guys playing 5-10 minutes a game. Avoid even one of these with AJ, Phyfe or Pickford and we likely have another NCAA tournament appearance if not multiple.

    5. Coaching - I still think Jake is one of the best to do it. The landscape of college basketball has changed so much over the last 10 years and really put mid majors at a disadvantage. While we haven't been winning the league year after year we have remained somewhat competitive despite being one of the lowest funded teams in the conference with some of the worst facilities. Tuttle and G have put life back into this program and are bringing in the right kids to build this program back up. I think we need to keep Tuttle at all costs - he will be the next head coach of the Panthers someday. He's one of the most competitive guys you'll talk to and a great leader. I have also only heard great things about G. It seems he has great relationships within the program and is gaining steam in recruiting as well. KG leaving for Iowa State was a massive loss and I think we're seeing that on the defensive side of the ball. We have improved this year on D but the inconsistency is where we're hurting and I think that's mostly due to some of the current veterans on the roster. The recent additions to the team are already showing massive improvements on D and I believe that will continue to trend in the right direction.

    6. Facilities - I've touched on this a couple of times but man they're bad. I don't know if many of you have seen the practice gyms they use in the WRC but they're worse than the gyms my 9th grade girls team gets to play in. Credit to the staff for making due but that practice facility needs to be built and completed asap. I think you'll see a massive jump in our program when that happens and it's a decade + overdue. I hope Megan's focus is to get this done as soon as possible.

    7. In-game atmosphere - This is an area that we were one of the worst in the country for quite some time. I can't believe we went 3+ years where one of our media timeouts was someone putting on a $20 practice mat. Talk about putting an arena to sleep. It seems like they've really put some thought towards this and it's nice to see. They're getting national attention for one of their promos coming up, another promo was just highlighted on SportsCenter, and they're improving concession costs to make games affordable for families. These are all big steps in the right direction. The Cedar Valley has always been a fickle fan base and a tough sell but there's enough people who are interested to fill a 7k seat arena every night if the right steps are taken. I'm obviously biased, but I don't think there are many arenas that provide a bigger home court advantage than a packed McLeod Center. That place can rock and is a blast to be at for a big game!

    8. School enrollment - UNI's enrollment was nearly cut in half in a 10 year stretch. This is and was a killer for the entire university and greatly affected athletics. It's nice to see these numbers bouncing back in the right direction again. Getting more families to weekend games will increase revenue and push these projects further along. I'm not sure there's many universities out there that has such a big divide between academics and athletics.

As bad as things may seem at the moment I really believe we're on the cusp of taking off. Within 5 years we'll likely have a brand new practice facility either built or underway, an alumni of the program who will be playing on a pretty substantial contract (AJ Green who I'd be willing to bet would chip in some $$), and the Valley is as winnable as ever. We have one of the best head coaches in the Valley with one of the next big up and coming assistants. The next big step will be getting back to the tournament and getting a win so we can stop talking about that damn A&M game. Be patient, good things are coming.

    I'll add...

    9. Media coverage. The Courier does a great job. We also had great coverage in the Gazette with Cole, but that seems to have gone away with his departure at the end of the calendar year. The athletic department needs to do whatever it can to cultivate relationships with media outlets to provide better coverage outside of Blackhawk County. And this goes to new media as well. Give every blogger, photographer, whomever wants to create content a free meal when they come to cover anything UNI related.

      Excellent Post. Truly outstanding.

There are things about Jake that absolutely frustrate me to no end but, big picture, the fact that we got a guy that good to stay and make it a career here when he could have tripled his salary says a lot about the Cedar Valley community especially when you consider he's had next to no administrative support for going on 15 years.

In the end, Ben Allen giving all that control to career middle manager, tiny man, no personality, vindictive, bully Tom Schellhardt ended the golden era of UNI Athletics and prevented us from doing huge things never seen at this level. We're never getting that opportunity back for a myriad of reasons but I think the future can be bright as long as Megan continues to hire good people, continues to acknowledge what she doesn't know and is the positive face for the department that she's been for the first eight months.

I've got not so great news on The Courier front....

Nelley is currently doing all the UNI coverage outside work hours on his own dime. He's been directed that the only thing the corporation that owns the paper is interested in is high school coverage and printing the stuff that Ethan for Iowa and the other kid that's doing Iowa State write. That can't go on forever.

BUT-- I can also tell you we haven't seen the last of Cole covering UNI at an even more in depth level than the Courier has in recent years.

I wondered if Cole would do his own thing. This is a positive development for sure.

Completely agree with the initial post as well. Give this administration a couple years and see where we are at. If we are still having the same issues after a few years of actual support for our programs, we can have a more in depth conversation about where we are at and where we should be. This is the first time in a very long time we have had an athletics office actually support and be creative with our programs.

This is not me being an apologist for the programs either. I get as frustrated as everyone else with basketball and football in particular.

Basketball - We take way too long to make adjustments when things aren't working and we seem to lack the required level of energy and toughness to have sustained success. It does need to get better.

Football - The last few years have seen our overall talent level drop significantly. That is due in large part to being severely under funded, but it is an obvious problem. Farley also was horrible at clock management and the defense has been a sieve. On the bright side, the new staff does appear to have injected some enthusiasm and talent early on. We are getting some really good athletes and guys with size.

With the dome renovation happening and the practice facility on the horizon, there are definite positives coming to both of these programs. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm interested in what people think of Seth Tuttle as the successor to Jake. Obviously loved him as a player. I'm not nearly as informed as others are, but it sounds like Tut's primary contributions right now are in recruiting? I think I remember people saying he was mostly responsible for bringing the flow offense to UNI after playing overseas, as well - is that accurate? I kind of hated that initially, but we're better with it than we used to be, as evidenced by our shooting percentages. I still hate seeing our 5 out there at the 3 point line, stuck with the ball in his hands trying to find someone to hand the ball to, but that doesn't happen nearly as much as it used to.

I basically want someone to tell me that Tuttle will lead us to the promised land when he gets his chance.

The bones of the program are healthy, we have a good coaching staff, with tons of experience and stability, our recruiting is solid, we have good kids in the program and a good talent level. Practice facility is long overdue, but seems to be in motion finally.

But the simple fact of the matter is that the performance on the court has not been good enough for the last 10 years. The highs are much lower, and the lows are also much lower.

Why did we lose 14 games with all that talent and experience we had last year?

How in the hell did we possibly lose 12 games in AJ's senior year with that loaded roster? Seriously, go back and look at that roster, its Godly for our level of basketball. All MVC level guys from top to bottom, and the best player on that team is an NBA regular.

No NCAA's for a decade, and its become routine for us to have losing seasons, which used to be unheard of during this regime. The Valley itself has done nothing but get weaker of the last 10 years, and our standing in the league has simultaneously fell. How does that happen?

Also, watching new coaches come into the league and kick ass immediately at Drake, Indiana State, etc while our veteran program treads water has been extremely frustrating to see. And we are continually told to be patient, and it takes time to build a roster/depth. Come on.

You can’t pass the torch to Tuttle unless the program hits another high.

good lord, done nothing for a decade and the successor is within?

                    roflmao.

this b.s. “UNI coaching family got to be internal ties” has cooked both football and basketball.

like football, blow it all out and start over when the time comes.

I don't disagree that it's been frustrating but there is also a backside to that one.

Look at the revolving doors at Illinois State, Missouri State and SIU. Those 3 have accomplished nothing over the last 15 years (longer at ISU) and are in perpetual rebuilds.

I'll contend that it wasn't the A&M game that turned this thing on it's head, it's the Drake loss in StL in '20. COVID hits 3 days earlier and we are in a totally different mental space.

We also blew an 18 point lead in the MVC title game in 2019 too. Inexplicably got our asses kicked by Drake in '20. Got our asses kicked by Loyola in '22 after beating them 1 week before. And obviously the Texas A&M game. We have had some catastrophic meltdowns that have dearly cost our program the last 10 years. We should have a 2nd S16 appearance and 2 other NCAA bids in our pocket and we got nothing.

Point being, there is a pattern here. Its not just a one-off fluke that can be dismissed.

Here is a list of all of the things that realistically could have been different during Jake's tenure.

2010: Win the Sweet 16 game, we were up 7 at half, and more than that when Adam Koch got into foul trouble. We easily could have been a Final Four team.
                          2010: Doug McDermott
2011: O'Rear gets hurt, the way we were playing when he got hurt I really think that we have a good chance at winning a third straight conference title.
2015: Louisville should have lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and the fact they later had to vacate their title is frustrating.
                          2016: Texas A&M
                          2019: MVC Title Game
2020: Drake Friday/ Covid Ending the Season
                          2021: AJ Green Injury

If one or two of these things are different, where would our program be? But at the same time, things like beating Kansas, UNC, Texas, UNLV maybe shouldn't haven't have happened either.

Agree with all of that and I think the 2019 game is really the killer and thinking back to what might have been if they call the foul when AJ gets hit on the elbow on the missed 3 in front of our bench or they (Higgins) don't make Luke's foul flagrant. My expectations were multiple bids in AJ's time here and getting one in his freshman year would have felt like stealing one.

But as you point out, we were on the plus side of a lot of things, biggest being the KU win. But also add in Wes's shot against Evansville. I'm in the same boat as others about not being all that happy about where things are at. But think about being Illinois State with no upside to point to and thinking back to losing in OT to us in '09 and then in '15 basically giving up a 14-point halftime lead by the first media time out. Combined with some other tough loses in STL. Or being Evansville and thinking about what happens if Wes doesn't make that shot.

I note Tom Schellhardt's name for the first time here in a long time. I agree. He poured cold water on a lot of things that Rick Hartzell was trying to do. Don't know how justified it was. I do remember like 10,000 seats filled in the dome for basketball.
