March Madness Game 1 - Saint John's - March 20

Been a while since we've had a game thread like this! Very excited to see our Panthers back in the NCAA after a decade long drought.

As many of us well know, any of these games will be a challenge, and Saint John's will be a formidable matchup. Regardless, we've been here before and the guys are more than capable. That said, Saint John's most likely got the 5 seed because the Big East is way down this year. I didn't realize till yesterday how bad most of the teams were. Anyway, not sure who that says more about, but they did beat uconn pretty handily in the Big East final.

Anyone else heading to San Diego for this game? I'm only able to make it there for this game at the most. Can't wait and GO PANTHERS!

But St. Johns is a terrible matchup for us. They seem under seeded on top of it.

But we are also a bad matchup for them.

The Big East was not good this year.

Yeah, broken record at this point, but I would rather play any of the other 5 seeds. But, who we play is out of our control, so time to get down to business and put our best effort out on the floor.

Benny is the key to this one. He's long and we've had good luck in the mid-range against Pitino teams in the past.

They don't have elite guard play either so the entire game is going to come down to Tristan and Will being able to stay on the floor and we're going to have to make 10+ 3s to have a chance.

This would be a great game to get some foul trouble going for the Saint John's bigs. We've struggled to get to the foul line in most games this year, maybe a little less as of recent.

Additionally, I sure hope that their team is looking past us like some of their fans are on their forum.

My gut is telling me that some of the comments about us playing "slow" are being interpreted as us being unathletic. God forbid we play methodically and with stout defense lol

I haven't checked out the St John's message boards, but I love that they think we aren't athletic. Bring on more of that. Reminds me of when the Wyoming fans thought their guys could jump over the backboard or when the UNLV fans (RRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLL SSSSSSSSS) thought they were going to run circles around us. How did that work for them?

I wouldn't look too much into it. They just won the Big East tournament by thrashing UCONN - I'd be expecting to roll to the Sweet 16 if I was them too lol

Already saw comments on Facebook saying how St. John's "basically received a free bye"

St. John's did benefit from a weaker Big East conference this year for sure. But St. John's also has just 1 Q2/3/4 loss (compared to UConn's 2), and their other 5 losses are to power conference tournament teams/first four out teams. The main thing keeping St. John's off the 4 line I would assume is only having 2 wins against teams in the tournament (their fellow Big East counterparts UConn and Villanova) compared to UConn's 7.

The ticket office is closed today, so I would expect not to hear anything till at least tomorrow.
