I wonder who Iowa will try to land. Should be interesting. I actually like Alford. I know he's unpopular in Iowa City but I think he's a decent coach.

I think it looks like a pretty good move and shows where Alford is at in his career as a coach and maybe even a hint of where he's at in his personal life. If I read this correctly and if I've heard correctly, he's actually taking a pay cut to make this move. Hope if works out and I hope he can have a nice clean start.

I for one, wish him luck. Unless of course the Panthers schedule the Lobos sometime in the near future.

Personally, I think we have a good thing going with the makeup of our b-ball staff. With all the changes taking place at nearby schools I hope none of them lure an assistant or two away from us. You can't blame someone if it's a step up, however.

Kyle Green would be the one that would scare me as far as leaving. Remember, he was on Mac's first staff and left for a DII job and then an assistant job at Marquette...

He is our pipeline to recruiting in Chicago, that pipeline is amazingly important...

Agreed there I hope Coach Green sticks around. Outstanding coach. I concur in liking the makeup of the staff. Looking forward to next season.

I hate to see Alford leave. Cuz they will probably will bring in someone who can coach & that means a tougher game on our schedule & with Mac at Iowa State a tougher time going after in state kids. Plus what will the Hawkeye fans have to complain about...Oh thats right they are Hawkeye fans they will find something !

Would this mean that UNI has a shot at landing any of the recruits that signed letters of intent to play at Iowa?

None of them are from Iowa, so I doubt it - unless they had some interest in UNI before.

I do wonder if Mac is kicking himself for not staying at UNI for one more year (although there is no guarantee he would have gotten the Iowa job this year).

Is there a rule we can't get out of state kids?

Accept it the panthers have arrived and plan to stay.

I hope Iowa hires friggin coach K and we still go to Iowa city and kick some butt.

I think the last few years, things involving Iowa basketball have spiraled out of control for Alford. I see where he's coming from in feeling that at Iowa, football comes first (not that this is necessarily bad, it's just the way it is) so he doesn't get any support whatsoever from his fan base.

There's no hiding the Pierce incident, whether you feel Alford handled it poorly or not. I've heard stories about his marriage and you never know what to take with a grain of salt or what to take as truth. I'm not purposely trying to make excuses for him, but some of that weighs down on you and could've been carrying over to the basketball court and how he treated those around him.

The fact is, he's better off someplace new, starting from scratch. He is not going anywhere at Iowa and Iowa basketball is not going anywhere with him. Like I said, personally, I like him and wish him luck. However if in a few years New Mexico basketball is in the gutter, then we can all start pointing fingers at him as maybe a pattern is developing.

However unlike someone else said, I'm not scared at who Iowa will bring in. I don't care if it's Iowa or Iowa State, our boys have proven that we can compete with whoever's on top in our state and that's what makes following the Panthers so fun.

Of course not, but I just think it is unlikely that UNI would be able to take some of Iowa's recruits if UNI wasn't in the running for those kids in the first place. The fact that the recruits are from out of state makes it even less likely.

Of course there's no rule about out of state kids (and yes, I know you were being sarcastic), but taking a look at the Selection Committee's fantastic picks and seedings this year, I can't say that I would particularly blame recruits for looking at a Big Ten school before they would ever look at a Valley school. It's sad, but it's the message the committee sent loud and clear this year.

Totally agree with you willie on Iowa hiring Coach K. The better the coach, the better the competition, and we all know we can compete now. Bring it on Hawks!
