    williebat,

Relax. It is what it is. Calm down. Your anger and whatever your intrepretation of the story is (whether it's true or not), isn't going to produce whatever the desired result is you seem to be looking for.

As for McDermott leaving ISU for Iowa, I would be stunned if that happens.

        C'mon Dags...

        It takes two to tango.

Mac is a great guy and a great coach. If he was using UNI as a DI stepping stone that is just fine, I don't think any of us have any problem with that. The problem that I, and I would guess a lot of other people, have is that he said for two years that this was his "dream job." Hartzell went out and worked his tail off to get him more money and more benefits and then he up and left two days after they got knocked out of the tournament.

I am grateful for what he did here, I am not so thrilled with the way he left...

Then what about all that dream job bull sh**& he spewed before he left.

Personally I would want someone at UNI who believes in the place and is not trying to be successful just so:

to quote coachdags "to get where he is now"

Whatever happen to integrity and pride in place. Does going from really rich (300 K a year) to really really rich (1 mil a year) somehow cancel that out?
          Answers to above questions...(My Opinions)

Yes! (He personally reserected UNI Mens Basketball, Gave you Coach Jake, The Facilities, Noterity, and Success you now enjoy is in a Large part because of Greg McDermott)

It was and always will be, he took the job at ISU for the Money, BCS Conference, Family, and Personel Challenge. He Loves UNI always will be a part of him!

Then Graduate from UNI and stay there yourself(Become a Teacher/Coach/Administration), put something back into the University, I do not know you, but my guess is you have not. Become a stake holder Greg McDermott already has and contuinues to do so with his support and contributions.

This will be the end of our disscusion....Thank You

            Brett,
I understand the hurt UNI fans felt, but I do not know if any of you guys realize how difficult of decision this was for Greg. Financial Security for your family, BCS conference, Home State, Personel Challenege, I was not as easy as you guys think, I know Greg and I do not believe he would have taken any other out of state jobs, UNI was his Dream.

But UNI fans also need to understand economics of Coaching, what have you done for me latley turnstile.

Do you really believe UNI is not a stepping stone for Coach Jake or any future Coach that will come along.... It is only a matter of how long?

In todays competive game if a Coach stays at any school over 7-10 years without Great Success (National) I would be surprised.

Nearly every coach in America says this type of thing. Yet year after year, coaches leave their jobs for better paying, higher profile jobs. Quit being so naive about it.

As a writer for PN, what would you have hoped Mac would have said 3 years ago if you asked him whether or not he had ambitions for another job?

Of course, no coach is going to say that "Yes, I am here forever NO MATTER WHAT!!"

I understand the economics and all of those other aspects. There is a huge difference between saying that "My family and I are really happy here and while you never say never, I look to be here for a long time" and "This is my DREAM JOB"

I have no problem with him taking the Iowa State job. In fact, I am glad that we get to play him every year. The contention I have had since it happened is that he interviewed for the K-State job and that he was looking to jump. I have no problem with him wanting a raise, a challenge, whatever. I do have a problem with the way he talked about leaving before he did.

I don't think crawford is naive.

My personal opinion is that we need to take things in life in general to a higher level. Just because everyone else is doing it excuse does not work.

Reality is yes coach jake will leave for a better job (I hope he is that successful).

The difference is between reality and what I wish were true.

I wish people would not lie and say something or someplace is their "dream job" and leave at the first chance you get. If he would have stuck around and continued success his salary would have went up and up and up. The cedar valley wants to win and is willing to pay for it.

You could say ben jacobsen the player did more for UNI BB than anyone.

And oh coach Dags if UNI offers me 300 K i'll be there tomorrow. Or 40 K for that matter. I love it.

My wife is a phd student and with a lot of luck maybe she will be a professor there in the next few years.

                  Dream job

                  you better believe it.

And as far as "Mac" looking for jobs.....?
Media outlets around here and everywhere else are going to throw out names.

Are you seriously for real? (Thanks for the warning Brett, but I can't stand back anymore).

So you're telling me that just because Mac "made the first move" at coming to UNI that that's why he decided to shove it in UNI's face and leave last year? That's absurd.

He left because of money and greed. I hate to be blunt but I don't quite know how else to put it and I don't understand how some people can use the excuse that he "accomplished all he could at UNI" or that he needed to go somewhere with better resources. Give me a break, he'd been here 5 years, 5 stinkin' years folks!

You're telling me that you get the coaching job of your "dreams" (remember, his words, not mine) for your former college, you stay for 5 years, taking your team to the tournament in 3 of them, and decide you've done all you can. Do some of you guys think he did "all he could do" at UNI? I certainly don't. And Dags, are you going to seriously use the "what have you done for me lately" excuse? He gave UNI 5 years, 5 years.

I had to get all that off my chest. Sorry if we don't see eye to eye. I loved coach Mac as much as any other Panther fan, but you're all being a little naive if you can't admit that it was a tad shady the way Mac departed from his "dream" job. If it wasn't his "dream" job, which he obviously knew it wasn't, then don't claim it is. I'm not saying to tell the public it's a stepping stone, but just don't say anything.

Now I'll try and stay away. As Chippewa warned Willie, because I understand this isn't going to go anywhere, but I had to get this off my chest. I apologize in advance for any hard feelings.

I don't quite know about how much the Cedar Valley wants to win or is willing to pay for it, but everything else you said was perfect Willie.

Fact is, he gave us 5 years and decided he'd opt out for a bigger salary now, while the selling price was high. He was pretty comfortable here in CF and could've been for a very long time I guess he decided he would rather be even more comfortable in Ames (Didn't he interview at DePaul too, a few years ago, or did I dream that.)

What makes me sad is that I think the whole situation shows what Mac's view of the Valley was. Instead of sticking around to see if you could eventually create something the way Altman has at Creighton, he wanted out. Until guys like Altman decide to stick around and see if they can help build something special, the Valley will probably have to get used to 2 bids a year in the NCAA tourney. Especially if it's the way their own coaches perceive them.

(I probably spoke too soon about Altman, maybe he'll be out the door too, but at least he can honestly say he put in his time at Creighton. I don't think even Mac would say he gave UNI a fair shot).

Okay, now let the ass-beating begin.

i wouldnt call why he left greed, ill say it was about the money but greed and getting a better paycheck are two different things. id switch jobs if they offered me that much more money, its not greed, its nice to be able to retire when he wants with a better amount of money for his family. i wouldnt call switching jobs for a better paycheck greed, its not like hes out swindling people out of their money in ames.

good for him, either way i dont think id leave iastate for iowa, state has some decent legacy to build on with the runs they made in the late nineties and early this decade, iowas legacy is a little further back but good for him, maybe state will give him a raise to make sure he doesnt go anywhere
