I like our defense against their offense. Our d- line is deep and physical. If you get penetration against that offense, good things happen.

I'm curious why people are saying this. I didn't see the game, but all of the press I read made it sound like Bailey did well, and made a lot of plays. The switch sounded like it was more of a change of pace designed to surprise EWU, not because the offense was stagnant. In other words, a 180 from the BS in the ISU game. Farley's comments backed that up. Is all of the above incorrect?

Bailey did very well. Ran the ball phenomenally well, and made a couple really nice throws.

The issue is that in the second half, they essentially shut AB down with defensive adjustments to prevent running. Three 3-and-outs in a row.

That and the offensive "flows" much more with with SK. With AB, you try to anticipate what happens as the originally called play breaks down. With SK, snapping the ball every 15 seconds, with decisive reads, throws and/or hand-offs.

As far as the game goes I think UNI has a very good chance to get a quality road win. I don't see more than 24 points being put up on our D and I believe it will be more in the range of 10-17. This team is not excatly exploisve and I believe the staff will put together a great plan to shut down the triple option. It will come down to what our offense does, limit turnovers and convert on 3rd down and I think we should be good. Does not sound like their D has shut either team down giving up well over 500 yards to ASU and well over 400 to Montana! Would be a great win to get headed into the buy week and eventually into the teeth of the schedule with ISU-r and NDSU after the buy.

To bolster our athletic department revenue, we wish NDSU and ILSU were both "buy" games. Unfortunately, after Cal Poly it's only a "bye" week.

I have to completely agree with this assessment. Bailey and the RB are the threats when he is in. When Sawyer is in, all of the play makers on the field are a threat because Sawyer actually gets the playmakers the ball. Sawyer gets the ball out of his hands much quicker than Bailey does. That might be because he understands the offense a little better, offense is run differently when Sawyer is in, or Bailey just doesn't read the defense at all. All I know is I've never been so frustrated through ISU and EWU to watch a very stagnant offense besides a couple huge plays.

Sawyer came in and the crowd cheered around us and everyone was clapping because there were actual forward passes happening within 2-3 seconds of the snap. Farley did the same thing last year with Brion. Brion couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a pass and Bailey dropped a 15 yard pass 5 yards short on Charles Brown Saturday.

The defense can't stack the box or key in on any certain one play maker when Sawyer is in. It's that simple.

So your issue is that when the other team made adjustments and shut down out offense, coach made a change and won the game? Who's to say that if SK started they wouldn't have adjusted to his style and shut him down in the second half?? Maybe the reason SK did so well is that their defense was adjusted to stop the run??

Honestly I like seeing two QB's on the field given out history with a single starter getting beat up and hurt mid season.

Good grief. The internet complains just to complain sometimes.

No, I'm not just looking at this one game. I'm looking at this season and last season. We have gone with a quarterback that is better at running the ball than throwing the ball. It's sad when a team makes a defensive change and forces you into 3 straight 3 and outs in the 2nd half because your quarterback isn't able to make an adjustment.

I would rather see Sawyer start and Bailey come in as a read option qb in different situations.

It's not just me complaining, the crowd has clearly noticed and is fed up with our offense being one dimensional too clearly shown by fans cheering when Sawyer was brought in at ISU and the EWU game.

FWIW, the crowd "roared" with cheers when Sawyer entered the MSU game in the third quarter last season as well. He got to hand the ball to DJ twice and was pulled again

I think the offense is being run differently when Kollmorgen is in the game. Whenever they called a pass play for Bailey, it seemed like there were no check downs. Every route was pretty much 15+yards downfield, and still developing by the time the pass rush broke through. When Kollmorgen was in, there were short, intermediate, and deep routes called. This seemed to work much better. I'd like to see this approach to the passing game when Bailey is in the game. Also, I noticed in the second half, I'm pretty sure Twait and Hanson were in the game instead of Schleuger and Appleman. The OL seemed better with this unit, so it'll be interesting to see who starts this week.

And also, we need to be seeing more of Miller and Huggins at RB IMO. I've noticed that we stick with the same RB for every play of a drive, and switch backs pretty much each drive. From what I've seen of Smith, he tries to bounce too many runs hoping for a big play instead of taking the simple gains. I know our line play has seemed rough, but seeing him get less than 2 ypc on 8 carries when Miller got 7 ypc on 18 carries is pretty telling. Huggins has looked good when given lanes to run through (his screen pass against ISU was nice), but he just hasn't gotten a lot of carries.

On defense, our safety play needs to step it up. Kilfoy got beat deep a couple times, as did whoever else we played opposite him (believe it was Webb and Young). A few weren't exactly the safeties fault (corner routes beat cover 2 almost every time), but it seemed like there were too many deep passes. Hopefully this gets fixed.

On a side note, I'm kind of surprised we haven't seen any of DJ Singleton (Nebraska transfer). Farley mentioned him as a guy who was in the battle for the spot opposite Kilfoy, but he hasn't played there at all. Its all been Edwin Young and Jordan Webb. Also, we haven't seen any of the DT transfer Bryce Douglas or Rod Hall from Clemson. Are these guys injured or just not better than what we have? It just seems odd that they seem to fit in at our thinnest positions, but haven't seen much time. Last year we rotated DL a ton, so I figured to see Douglas a bit, but he hasn't played yet. And Hall looks like a good athlete, but at WR its pretty much all been Fountain, Cunningham, Brown, and a bit of Demos. Just find it odd that Demos, a guy who practiced at WR for a week or so is ahead of him. Also, WVU transfer Brandon Napoleon hasn't suited up at all, so might he be redshirting this year? It would make sense to do that since we have Hall, Dorleant, Whiting, and Buchanan at CB, although we still haven't had a FS step up.

Of course there aren't any short routes for Bailey. His running ability is his check-down

If you want him to be able to run, you have to clear linebackers and safties. To do that you have to run them off with your receivers...

True, but one route along the sideline could still take a LB out of the box. A drag route would force LB's to watch the WR coming across, taking their eyes off the QB, which could open lines. Instead, the LB's right now really just need to watch Bailey and focus on containing him. I just think some diversity in our passing game would help no matter who is under center.

My thought on keeping the same RB on the field is to limit the possibility of defensive substitutions. I think that part of Smith's issue is learning that he needs to run north-south, rather than attempting run around the edge. The other part is that the OL is probably not blocking consistently (as the play is drawn up).
