  • David Harris Leaving for Tulane

I figured this probably needs it's own Thread.

    Pete Thamel

    @PeteThamel
Sources: Tulane is targeting Northern Iowa athletic director David Harris to be the school's next athletic director. Except something to be formalized in the upcoming days.

This is a blessing and absolutely necessarry.

Now, the hard part. Have to get someone great in this role. Maybe the most important hire in UNI history coming up. Absolutely cannot botch this.

    Realistic candidates? Go:

Mark Farley has been the interim twice. He's a proven fundraiser and has good relationships with the coaches we want to keep happy.

        1. Is he ready to step away from football? Would hiring his own replacement make that easier?
        2. Does the senior admin of the university trust him? Does he trust them? He knows what we need, will he be allowed to try to go out and get it?

It starts with Mark. I think you have to figure out if that's a legitimate option.

I think Nathan Christensen has to get a look. I'd also look at important people on Leon's staff.

                1. He would be willing to step away to be AD, I firmly believe. A large part of him holding on has been not wanting to give David power to hire the next HC. He loves UNI too much to give David that power. The next HC is easy after that - Reeder or JJ
                2. Yes.

Now, is he ultimately the right fit? I don't know. I think he needs to be the first interview and the first few months should be spent looking at him along with whatever the search firm comes up with.

No matter who it is, Farley should 100% have the #2 position, at minimum, in charge of fundraising and community outreach/building.

This is spot on. This is exactly what our fan base needed in this moment in time.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

                      Bring back Justin Sell.

Though this would be a step down from what he has accomplished up in the tundra

I think you have to get a 'No' from him before you make any other decisions. Leon as well.

Out of town and just reading all this. Keith Murphy linked an ESPN article basically saying this is a done deal. Is that accurate; is this basically done except for the signature?

The ESPN article says their current, and successful, football coach is lobbying for an internal person he likes.

WGNO is already airing an editorial about this …

Tulane chooses David Harris as new athletic director. Here’s our Ed-itorial from Monday’s 6 p.m. WGNO news.
