I think it's more of a Tim Tebow type of thing. All the credit for wins, none for the losses.

I'm not claiming we are a reason for anyone's success. Only pointing out a statistic.

If this is the fault of the Athletic Department for not pushing for a pep band throughout the season, then shame on them.

If it is a case of pep band members claiming too much time constraint, then we need to find an alternative or simply go without. They definitely have time in early December, usually with only a couple days of class back from Thanksgiving break and the week or so before finals, to be able to show up for the Iowa or Iowa State game, so I am not really buying the time issue.

If it's a money thing, then the first thing that should be cut is money and lodging for the MVC tournament. The NCAA tourney is reimbursed at least partly by the NCAA, so that is not an issue.

Point is, the pep band is a part of the atmosphere of a game day. I think they should be there for every game and the AD needs to figure a way to make sure that one is there. It is hard to build an atmosphere if all we hear is "we're too busy for all but part of the season"-seems to be the excuse for most of the student body and Cedar Valley as well. Hard to build a fan base and game experience if the overall presentation is put together only on an "as available" basis.
The whole point is that the pep band students themselves are not to blame. That is how it is coming off to us. We have no control over what games we are scheduled to play. We simply show up for the games we are.

Nobody specifically blamed the band students initially. Pretty much every single person here has said that the band does a great job and is a big part of the atmosphere. Point is, we just want the band to be there. We don't care who's responsible for it not happening, but saying the band students have absolutely no say is just another cop-out.

It was you guys who came on here and offered up excuse after lame excuse. Not enough time, too much commitment, dorms weren't open, its too difficult, a smaller band would sound bad, not enough incentive, and on and on and on...

We felt a need to defend ourselves from something that shouldn't have even been an issue in the first place. It was you guys who started the pathetic attack of a university pep band. The only say band students have is whether or not we will join or not. We have no control over which games we are at, I believe that is the job of the athletic department. Perhaps you should start a thread about that instead of cheap shots towards the band.

The fact that each poster on this thread has a different idea of the thread's intent is a great reason for it to die. Everyone attacking everyone over everything is wonderful, and makes us all look passionate and educated, but there's really no need. If you want to generally discuss how much we love what the pep band contributes to the game day environment, this is not the place for that. On the other hand, if you're here to talk about how terrible the band is for not coming to every single game, there is NO place for that. It's that simple.

There is no point to discussing problems without discussing solutions. That's what therapists are for. The University has wonderful on campus services for that. Free to students.

I agree you are right, this shouldn't be an issue. At 90% of the schools in D1, having a band is not an issue. Are you trying telling me that the athletic department asked the band to not be at the games? I guarantee that is not the case.

Nobody attacked the band members. They attacked the fact that the band doesn't go to games.

Many of you came on here and offered up some really terrible excuses, and there has rightfully been some backlash to those. Cheap shots? Yeah right.

Yeah, the excuses are so legitimate, that they only apply to UNI and not to any other school or pep band.

Whoa. Have you missed a home game this season? In the last 5 years? If you have, why? Actually, don't bother because it's a lame excuse.

That's exactly what you are saying to the band members - that if you don't attend every game it's inexcusable. Yes, we are a division one program - but so is Bucknell and who's band played their fight song at the NCAA tournament for them a few years ago?

If you think that the pep band not attending home games is the reason for poor attendance/poor performance we can site a number of schools where the band shows up every game and the team and fan attendance suck.
It's about time we make the McLeod LOUD!

I don't see what's wrong with wanting to emulate the best (or average) and have a pep band at all home games rather than comparing the program to some of the worst (as in Bucknell).
