And there's been at least a couple women's basketball games, too. If I recall correctly, Green Bay, Chicago State, and South Dakota State, but none since.

Edit: Add Southern Illinois. First 2013 pep band sighting at a women's game

Must not have had this game on their schedule. Or they got caught up in the snowstorm or something. I hope the Athletic Department isn't spending money to transport and house them for St. Louis, let's just see if some Missouri high school band wants to play at the games.

No doubt that they'll be traveling to St. Louis, because it's a trip where they can go and do fun stuff.

So I noticed that the pep band was at the women's game today though...so...wtf.

I have been told athletics contacted the director only just yesterday about the Denver game but how difficult is it to tell all of your pep band members "Hey, so I apologize, we kinda got the shaft here but apparently there is a men's game tonight" (to which most of the students look at each other and think, "No ****...") "and while it's short notice, I think it's very important that we still show up and play."

Unless a big concert or event was already planned, the entire pep band was obviously in town and I can't believe it's that difficult to organize having everyone come back a few hours later and doing the exact same thing that they do at all home games. Honestly, am I making this sound more simple than it really is and have my expectations too high?

They hit their quota of 1 game per week. I'm sure they were exhausted and needed a night off.

I'm all for writing the band off for next year and using local high school bands for our games. At least it will bring some new people in to experience Panther basketball.

Agree. St Louis (and the NCAA tournament if we make it) just got revoked after tonight.

Even if the athletic department just told them it's not a good excuse considering how the game has been promoted. You can't tell me not one member knew and didn't wonder "hey are we supposed to play?" Seriously pathetic.

sounds like very very poor communication between athletics and band director. That is usually a bad sign for a host of other issues. Just sayin

How does the band director not have a schedule? Athletics shouldn't have to call to 'remind' them.

No they shouldn't but apparently they do. I was pretty surprised when I heard "They didn't call us in time". Also, once again, how do none of the students say anything? Most of them are huge supporters and cheer more loudly and enthusiastically than 90% of our students/fans. Perhaps they preferred the opportunity to sit and spectate like the average student instead of having to play as well. Idk...stupid

                      • Hilariously old, but somehow still relevant, bump of a 14 year old thread that has been dead for 12

                        But

Does the pep band even exist anymore? 11 home games so far this season, and as far as I can remember the pep band has been at maybe 4 of them. Hideous. What's their excuse going to be for the last couple games? Winter break is over. It's not finals week. There is no football so it's not splitting time. There is no marching band issues. Yes, the marching band was in England over the New Year holiday but I doubt they are still there a week and a half or two weeks later. Are they still somehow recovering and unable to muster the energy to play?

Have they been to any women's games outside of the Iowa State game?

I can't wait for the excuses we get in 2025 and beyond.

                          • Honestly, I go back to what I said 11-12 years ago and have repeated in threads discussing the addition of a DJ this year.

Be done with the pep band. Full stop. We won't have one at the conference tournaments or NCAA tournaments made. Big deal. The fans, and team, will be used to them not being there. Fully end the pep band program.

                            • Yes, its a 14 year old thread. Yet, nothing has changed.

People wonder why our attendance sucks ass, and yes the #1 reason is the basketball program simply has not been good enough, but there are a whole host of other reasons outside of that and things like not have a band at your games are absolutely part of it.

There is nothing good about the atmosphere in our arena. The music is quiet. There are no students at the games. We still have no center court video board. And there is hardly ever even a band playing, which is something that shouldn't even need to be said. Its a killer for the atmosphere.

                              Its embarrassing. Its pathetic.

                              • Dr. Franklin posted a thank you to the cheer squad last night for having a full squad during the winter break. She may not have meant anything by it, but I couldn't help but read between the lines.

It's definitely sad how bad our crowds are right now. And they are definitely making efforts within the department, but one thing that drives me crazy is how quiet the music is for the starting lineups. You could almost hear a pin drop.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."
