Re: Will the band be at the game on Sunday?

as an outside observer i see a large amount of aggression and finger pointing here. im extremely curios why the pep band has become the focus of all of this... i think many of you are misinformed that running a pep band is an easy task... it is no such thing...

i would also like to point out many of these students who do pep band that are music majors do many.. MANY things besides just pep band... athletes on average are respected for being able to keep good grades and do a single sport that involves the practices and game required to compete in said sport... and a music major and someone who is supposed to be a musician they are asked support the pepe band/marching band.. hold concerts year round.. practice music.. attend meeting to anything else they are involved in as well as do all of their class work...

from my perspective the life of a musician in general has to encompass many more thing than just "playing an instrument"... so please... take into account what you are trying to get other people to do.. and if you think you can do a better job dont just say so... prove it... if not... kindly refrain from bashing and belittling something that people do in fact put their heart and soul into... unless of course you wish to have the thing you love attacked...

Unfortunately, 95% of the country has more school spirit than UNI.
You're right, it is not uncommon to see more Iowa/Iowa State t-shirts or sweatshirts on campus than UNI apparel. At the same time, there is school spirit here. From what I've noticed from being here for 1.5 years, and visiting several other state universities; UNI students are extremely focused on getting their education, moreso than most other state universities.

It's freaking ridiculous that UNI can't pull a pep band for every home game, but seemingly every other school can.
It might come as a surprise for you, but UNI is less than half the size of the other schools you are referring to. Sure, there's a little over 13,000 kids on campus, but let's focus in on that number. There are roughly 200-250 instrumental music majors on campus. Of course, not all of them want to or can be in pep band. But, there are non-music majors who still like to play in there spare time to bring that number back up to around 200. Out of those 200 potential pep band members 120 play in one of the two pep bands. I have talked to some of the 80 or so who cannot and they say that they have too many scheduling conflicts to justify being in pep band.

The bigger problem here is why the PEP BAND of all things is under attack. Get a life.

Precisely. Last I checked, the band has nothing to do with the success of Panther's Men's Basketball. And if I am not mistaken, that is the entire point of this forum.

yet for some reason if the team goes on a run and flies to a far off land for the NCAA tournament the band will be demanding that they need to travel along...

Seriously, PN has been hi-jacked by bandies? Go blow your horn else where. The band does nothing but bring down football games, take up premium seating, and ***** because they are too busy studying (playing Modern warfare on xbox) to get 20 of them to come out to the basketball game.

Too much work my ass, if the high school in my back yard can put together 30 kids to come play at EVERY boys and girls basketball game, I would hope that the UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA could too...

Get post jeg, I thought Farley was going to jump into the stands and beat the (insert explicative here) out of the entire band when it caused him to use a time out. Why are they not directly behind the away team bench like every other school has it.

It's really disappointing to see such ignorance running rampant in this topic. Know that this is an extremely busy time for music majors (who are already enrolled in one of the most demanding and hectic majors offered at ANY University) as the school of music is putting the final touches on an Opera which is debuting this weekend, on top of the regularly scheduled performances. Know that Pep Band is, no matter what, an extra curricular "for fun" ensemble. The members of the ensemble are STUDENTS before PERFORMERS. I understand that it's hard for you to understand, because many rule Music as a non-serious major because they have little ability to pursue it. Please respect the students who sped hours upon hours practicing, studying, and preparing. Living on 4 or less hours of sleep a night, while taking 5-6 "0 or 1" credit classes, and still managing to enroll in 19 for a semester, all in hoped of graduating in less than 5 years.

"You don't have to understand it, just respect it"

Wouldn't wanna take up that premium seating.

Also, last year when the team had its first playoff game over Thanksgiving break (the one they lost at home) there was no band. Players commented on how strange it was not having the band there. Of course I'm not saying we win or lose games, but if I recall, UNI is 10-2 in the dome the past two years with the band, and 0-1 in the dome without it.

Pep band in itself is not too much work, but when you pile it on to the many other things we are all doing it becomes difficult to balance everything. We will "blow our horns somewhere else", it will be at the next basketball game. As for playing Modern warfare on xbox, I know a lot of music majors and maybe one or two even has an xbox. You think they'd waste their precious time playing a game when they have to practice or study? Give me a break. My roommate is a music major and he has class all day (Starting at 8 AM), and then practices until the PAC forces him out at 2 AM.

I think this thread has run its course. We are at the games now, and we cheer louder than any of you blue hairs sitting on your hands.

Re: Will the band be at the game on Sunday?

I enjoy the marching band at the football games but I do think they need to be seated in non-premimum seating and away from the home bench. I always feel sorry for the people in wheelchairs sitting behind the tubas. The pep band is a great addition to the basketball games and I do miss them when absent but certainly understand why they do not show up for games during the break. Thanks musicians for doing your part in adding to the game atmosphere.

Re: Will the band be at the game on Sunday?

This entire thread is stupid and needs to die. Most of you are getting schooled in logic by our music students, so please just stop. While I wish Pep Band could be around more often to participate on a wider scale than they currently do, and their coordinators had more "in-game awareness" (you can't mainly blame the people who are being directed to play for playing at an inappropriate time) every argument about their busy schedules is 100% correct.

Now I know a large number of music performance majors and a good portion of the marching and many many many of them have plenty of time for non-musical school activities, a social life and yes I'd say I've discussed Call of Duty, Arkham City and Madden/FIFA with most of the guys, but they still have a much more demanding academic schedule due to the necessary practices/rehearsals, regular performances and other dept. of music related activities.

A little green man put it best when he told me once "Cutting of slack you must"

I would venture a guess that many of the pep band/marching band members at other D1 schools are not music majors/minors at all. (That's definitely the case with the Ohio State marching band.) With 13,000+ students at UNI, I'd bet there are enough people with some HS band/orchestra experience who would be able to play in a pep band, even without studying music in college. Having played in the UNI pep band for semester myself, I know the music is not difficult to the point where only advanced music students can play it. If they're not doing so already, maybe the pep band leadership could actively recruit members from the student body at large with just a very basic audition process. That might help the issue of numbers vs. music majors being very overworked and under-credited academically (which is definitely the case.)

Re: Will the band be at the game on Sunday?

To the pep band members posting here: yes, passion runs high on Panther Nation concerning your presence at games. It clearly adds to the atmosphere when we hear the school song live, along with other music you provide. That's why fans want a pep band at each game, both first semester and second. Most of us would probably be OK with not having a pep band during the semester break or at least the two weeks of Christmas and New Years. But the atmosphere is clearly much better when you are in attendance. We appreciate what you do and want more of it!

It would seem that a good compromise would be to have a pep band of 25-30members at each game rather than 50+. That way most band members would only be required to be at half the games and the atmosphere would be improved with a pep band playing. I know you have pointed out that it wouldn't sound the same with a smaller number but I've attended games in other Valley conference venues, along with games in Iowa City, Ames and other Division I universities with that size pep band and they sound great.

Agreed...13k+ students is not a small university. Really, outside of the "big time" schools, most universities are about 10-20k

Colleges considered "small" have fewer than 5,000 students. These are typically private colleges like Hobart, Colgate, Grinnell, and Reed. It is entirely possible to find small public colleges, however, such as Evergreen State College (Washington) and Delaware State University.

Many public and private colleges fall into the "medium-size" category, between 5,000 to 15,000 students. Yale, Brown, Howard, Duke, University of Arkansas (Fayetteville), University of Montana (Missoula), and Binghamton University (State University of New York) are all medium-sized.

"Large" usually means more than 15,000 students. Many of the most well-known institutions fall into this category: University of Southern California, New York University, and University of Pennsylvania on the private side; UCLA, Michigan State, and University of Texas at Austin on the public side. A label of "huge" would be more accurate for those public universities that have more than 30,000 students.

If it is too much for the band majors to do, then there needs to be outside recruiting going on. Heck, invite local high school band students to play. I know Creighton does this. Give them admission and have them play. I'd bet that those willing to play could play the "college level" pep band music.

I get there is a lot going on, but it's rather strange that the band can show up for the Iowa/Iowa State games pre second semester but not the other ones....Or they can manage to find time to fly across the country during the NCAA's....
