Does anyone have a gauge on the reaction of their fanbase? I don't follow them super close, but some of the DMR writers were basically telling them to cool their jets about bring in an elite coach, or someone like Hornacek. In other words, the ISU job isn't as elite as they think.

Most of what I have read is very positive. He plays a similar up-tempo (actually Murray St was higher than ISU last year) game and has posted some great seasons. Taking them to the tournament his first year and should have gotten an at-large this year.

Seems like a lot of people are worried about losing TJ which is probably warranted as he was/is a good recruiter for the team. Sounds like they will talk about the staff tomorrow at the press conference.

A lot very happy or cautiously optimistic, a few mad.

And the reason some of the writers were telling fans to cool their jets was because it was commonly known that ISU was interviewing 7 candidates, 4 of whom were publicly known and the other 3 were "mystery" candidates of higher profile. It was also mentioned that ISU could afford to pay their basketball coach $5 million/year with it's current budget. (obviously not going to pay a coach that much right off the bat or to somebody who hasn't earned it) But, I think a lot of fans were hoping to snag more of a "splash" hire for $2-3 million/year. I have no idea who those 3 mystery candidates were, but I'm sure they'll leak in the next couple of days.

There's an interesting discussion on 1700 AM in DSM right now. The guy driving the hire was Leath, the ISU President. Pollard, the AD, was more or less aced out of the process. That's backed up by a recorded interview with Leath. It will be interesting to see if there are any repercussions going forward.

A lot of that is being over blown.
However, it did sound like JP wanted to settle and promote TJ Otz to head coach and the President didn't want to settle. He wanted to go through the interview process and find the right fit.

Are ISU fans all up in arms that he's breaking his vow to MSU and the new contract he signed? Are they upset that he is going against his words that he wanted to be a part of what was being built for the coming years? Are the worried about the legacy he could have built at MSU and how this now tarnishes it?

We'll see how good he is at coaching. At Murray State he had a first round NBA point guard going against the 25th rated conference in the nation. Now he'll have a good team going against rosters full of guys with NBA type talent.

Prohm will start earning his pay checks after next year. He's going to need to start recruiting for 2016, yesterday. ISU will lose basically everybody after next season to either the NBA or graduation.

Most people on this message board could coach next years ISU team to a NCAA tourney bid. The high expectations for next year don't change because of this. And it makes me happy to hear his style of play and coaching is nearly identical to Hoiberg's.

I don't think that isu basketball players work hard enough for ban to be interested in coaching them (same for the wrestling team)!

I'm sure all of your friends, neighbors, and enemies on this board will give you a big thanks for bringing me into a discussion that I had zero intent of taking part in!

But, actually, I probably could, but that's another can of worms that we don't want to open on here about my philosophy of coaches (more directed toward pro coaches, though, than college coaches).

All I'll say as a teaser to this philosophy is Bill Frieder, Fab Five, and Steve Fisher.

Boo-yah, as the kids are saying these days.

Kids haven't said that in well over a decade. You're about as up on your pop culture as you are on how basketball actually works.

And, given my point, nor does it matter that kids ever saw how Fisher took over a top team at the beginning of the national tournament, only to be later hailed as a, "coaching genius."

Fisher is not a good example for you to use. Even after that 6 games in 87-88 he kept Michigan at a high level and went 179-81 (68.9%) his next 8 years in Ann Arbor - yes, the NCAA has taken some of those because of a booster giving players money - but he still coached those kids to those wins and used his "coaching genius"

After his time at Michigan he took over at San Diego State, a laughing stock of a program. He won 5 games his first year, 1999-2000. Since then he has gone 334-162 (68%). If we look at his years after he was able to get his system in place and get recruits to buy in he is 258-88 (75%). He's had them ranked in the top 15 each of the last 5 years in the AP poll. The fewest wins he's had since his system was in place (the 68% period) is 20, which is the third year of this period. Since that time he's gone 26-10, 25-9, 34-3, 28-8, 23-11, 31-5 and 27-9. Oh, he went 24-9 and 22-11 the year before he only got to 20 wins. He has 9 total MWC titles. He's led SDSU to 8 NCAA tournaments, including 6 straight, getting to multiple S16s. He's also lead SDSU to 4 NITs. All at a program that hadn't been to a post season tournament since 84-85

Fisher was also a D1 coach for a decade before he took over for those 6 games and had spent the last 7 years in Ann Arbor as the lead assistant/associate HC recruiting and coaching those same players. It's not like he just happened to have season tickets near the bench area and the athletic director went "Well, this team is pretty good so it doesn't matter who coaches them", looked into the stands and pointed at Steve from mid-court challenging him to coach the team WWE style.

You might want to pick a different coach to attempt to make your point. I also fail to see how a 10-15 year old catch phrase from a SportsCenter anchor, who is now dead, ties into this.
