After his time at Michigan he took over at San Diego State, a laughing stock of a program. He won 5 games his first year, 1999-2000. Since then he has gone 334-162 (68%). If we look at his years after he was able to get his system in place and get recruits to buy in he is 258-88 (75%). He's had them ranked in the top 15 each of the last 5 years in the AP poll. The fewest wins he's had since his system was in place (the 68% period) is 20, which is the third year of this period. Since that time he's gone 26-10, 25-9, 34-3, 28-8, 23-11, 31-5 and 27-9. Oh, he went 24-9 and 22-11 the year before he only got to 20 wins. He has 9 total MWC titles. He's led SDSU to 8 NCAA tournaments, including 6 straight, getting to multiple S16s. He's also lead SDSU to 4 NITs. All at a program that hadn't been to a post season tournament since 84-85

You might want to pick a different coach to attempt to make your point. I also fail to see how a 10-15 year old catch phrase from a SportsCenter anchor, who is now dead, ties into this.
Nonsense. He started as a head coach with a top team, at the end of the season, and was instantly hailed as a "genius" at that point.

He continued to prove that genius. I know you've admitted that you get into discussions on here with no interest in facts, or looking them up, but go look at the record he had at Michigan. Hell, I posted it for you. He won 68.9% of his games over the next 8 years. That same starting 5 of the 89 team was no longer there. I also added to my post you quoted. Go back and read that part. He pretty much is a coaching genius.

You are the complete opposite of a genius when it comes to basketball, even though you apparently played for 6 years.

All well and good, but what you don't remember is how he was given so much credit for their success at the tournament after taking the helm just days before. I can distinctly remember thinking how in the world are they giving this guy this much credit when he inherited a team that was going to go the national finals with a Bo-Bo Doll as a coach. Who the coach was (my point) made ZERO difference with that team.

Getting back to my original point (when I was brought into this discussion), anyone could take ISU to the big dance this year, which likely means me as well.

JFC. Give it a rest. All of you. This is summer, I shouldn't have to deal with middle school arguments for another 2 1/2 months. You guys kill interesting threads faster than Lakes.

If you really want to make this interesting, figure out a way to get Spanish Moon involved. We'll quickly be discussing everything from UFO sightings to restaurant choices on a first date.

Sorry. I will make sure to send every post I might make between now and opening kick off to each of you in a PM to get your approval first. Heck, let's make it a rule. The only post between now and football is football related and only related to how good things can be. Nothing else is allowed. That will take this site from it's killer 3 or 4 posts per day to 1.

Don't like it, don't read it.

How many different threads have you guys had some iteration of the same argument? Grow up.

Back to Prohm, I'm curious to see how well he recruits. I think we'll know soon as the cupboard seems pretty bare after this year.

On paper, he would seem up to the task. He already has one guy in the NBA, and another about to get drafted. I don't know the individual stories behind either guy, but it's extremely tough to find kids with that level of ability that are under the radar, and bring them to a mid major school. Under the radar, developmental guys rarely play in the NBA, since almost all of them are ID'd at a young age. There are exceptions, of course, but they're rare enough to be more or less one-offs. Prohm's also had some good teams, so he's obviously recruited some other solid players. But, to your point, time will tell.

I'm guessing one or both guys had some kind of baggage which led them to a Murray St. type school; grades, broken laws, bad family situation, etc. if that's the case, then Prohm still deserves credit for guiding them through a multi-year career, staying eligible and out of trouble, etc.

If that is, indeed, the case then he sounds like a carbon copy of the Mayor. Which is a great thing for isu and basketball in the state of iowa. I'm rooting for him (outside of one game every other year).

How is this the "argument". Ban brought up an idea that Steve Fisher isn't a good coach because this first 6 games were with a really good team, all stemming from the discussion on Prohm will earn his money when he has to bring in recruits.

This is a completely different "argument" that anything related to Jake that's happened in the past. Don't be a freaking pansy about "discourse" on a message board.

If you haven't learned to ignore him by now, you're on the same intelligence plane as Ban. I actually enjoy his posts (much like lakes) because he brings a different perspective in that he isn't unrealistic. Once in a while, if you dig deep enough, you can find a valid point or two. If you haven't noticed, your back and forth does nothing to change his mind, it only works to annoy other posters. I'm done addressing it, just give it a frickin rest.

Google has a 100% clean result on Payne. Nothing popping up on grades, legal issues, test scores, beating teammates up, beating women, doing drugs, etc... He wasn't nationally rated out of high school by any recruited service, though he did have 3 stars from Rivals and 2 from VerbalCommits and 247. His only other offers were App State, Ark State, UT-Chattanooga, and Jacksonville. He was a 5"11 160# PG coming out of a school in Memphis that had 338 kids in high school. That would make them a 2A school in Iowa because their BEDS number would be roughly the size of Sheldon, Beckman, Waterloo Columbus, Monticello. New Hampton would be about 30-40 kids larger based on BEDS.

I think it's pretty safe to say he just really blossomed in that system, grew 3-4 inches and added 20-25lbs of muscle. I don't think it had anything to do with him being a "bad egg" that MSU took a flyer on.
