Under the radar, developmental guys rarely play in the NBA, since almost all of them are ID'd at a young age. There are exceptions, of course, but they're rare enough to be more or less one-offs. Prohm's also had some good teams, so he's obviously recruited some other solid players. But, to your point, time will tell.

I'm guessing one or both guys had some kind of baggage which led them to a Murray St. type school; grades, broken laws, bad family situation, etc. if that's the case, then Prohm still deserves credit for guiding them through a multi-year career, staying eligible and out of trouble, etc.
In looking into both Canaan and Payne, they appear not to have those issues, but were instead under-recruited because of size issues. Canaan was MS 5A player of the year but was only a 6'0 shooting guard, Payne was skilled but signed as a 5-11, 166 pound senior. Looks like he has an eye for develop-able talent, the question is will he be able to transfer that to a level of recruit that is more highly looked at like what the Big XII schools go after?

Maybe not a carbon copy, but ISU would've been dumb to hire someone who would drastically alter their style of play, or the type of players they go after. I agree with you, it's good for basketball viewing in Iowa. Also, the recent NCAA rule changes seem to favor teams used to playing up tempo.

The lack of prototype size makes the whole thing make sense. It's nice to see guys of that caliber playing for a non P5 school, although it doesn't happen too often. I'm with you, will he be able to adjust his recruiting upward enough that they stay competitive in the Big 12. He doesn't need to sign four NBA caliber recruits every year, that's not realistic. What he needs though is too land one every few years, and also really ramp up the level of supporting player as opposed to what he brought into Murray St.

We'll see how good he is at coaching. At Murray State he had a first round NBA point guard going against the 25th rated conference in the nation. Now he'll have a good team going against rosters full of guys with NBA type talent.

I see what you did there.

It's NOT a fact that Fisher took over a top team just before the NCAA tournament, who subsequently went to the finals?

He did. He had also been coaching there for 7 years and was a major piece of the coaching staff that recruited and developed that team. Think of him as Ben Jacobson at the time, kind of. He had been there for a long time. He was the lead, or a key, recruiter for most of the players. Was key in implementing, and tuning, the system.

You want to act as though he was pulled out of the stands, had never coached any basketball in his life, and just sat back and let the players do their thing. That Michigan team was a 3 seed, some polls had them outside the top 10. They finished 3rd in the B10 (12-6 and 3 games behind Indiana for 1st). They were 21-7 going into the tournament vs D1 teams .They didn't run people over in the tournament either - 5 point win over 14 seed Xaver, 9 point win over 11 seed South Alabama, 5 point win over 2 seed UNC, they did crush 5 seed Virginia 102-65, 2 point win over Illinois and then a 1 point OT win over 3 seed Seton Hall.

To say that he had zero impact on that tournament run is pretty silly. He got, and deserved, a lot of credit for guiding that team like he did. He continued, and still continues, to prove his coaching ability for the next 25ish years

If you say yes, then why are you claiming that I don't discuss facts?

And, incidentally, a Bo-Bo Doll could have done the same thing with the same result with that team.

The fact you believe that says more than anything else you could type. You make it sound as though that team was unstoppable, beat everyone by 30 points and had 12 NBA first rounders that are now hall of famers. Did he inherit a very good team? Yes. Was he extremely important to building it the entire year, and years prior? Yes. The team was 21-7 heading into the tournament and 20-6 going into the conference tournament. They were the absolute dominate for you want to believe they were.

According to the Des Moines Register, Clinton, IA senior-to-be Brady Ernst has accepted an Iowa State scholarship offer, picking the Cyclones over the Panthers. In his five years at ISU, Hoiberg had no Iowa high school grads on scholarship.

As far as I now, that scholarship offer from us had expired a long time ago. I don't think he had any other offers currently.

ISU just desperately needed post depth for next year. I hope he can develop into a good player for them.

Can he get up and down the floor? If not , it means: A) ISU is desparate for players at that position, or B) Prohm is changing their whole style of play. I hope B isn't true, since they're fun to watch. I also hope this kid plays well at ISU. While I'm not a big cheerleader for Iowa high school basketball, it would be nice to see a few local high schoolers contribute to that type of team. Ultimately, with the recent rule changes, that's where the NCAA wants to take things.

They missed on a couple transfers this off season that would have added much needed depth. Now, we're just looking for bodies to fill the last 2 open scholarships.

You don't fill open slots with bodies if you're a semi-transfer oriented team. I'm betting the coaches think this guy is athletic enough to contribute at some point in the future.

Well I'm sure the coaches think he will be a contributer at some point, but at this point they can't be too picky since its so late in the recruiting period for next year. Either let he scholarship go unused or just find some bodies to fill the scholarship. After next year ISU will lose a lot of players and will have plenty of spots open.
