  • Attention UNI Athletics Marketing

Let me first start off by saying that I have obviously been a fervent Panther supporter for many years. I would like to think I have a considerable amount of level headed, and yet admittedly optimistic, posts over the course of the 11+ years I've been affiliated with this message board. I would imagine it's hard to find many pessimistic posts with my name to it. So, understand that as I proceed to make the following statements.

I am well aware of the budget situation at UNI. TD and his staff have made some incredibly difficult decisions over the years. I respect him and the entire AD for that. Because of his leadership, insight, and enthusiasm donors are opening their pocket books up more, buying tickets at all time levels, and general total athletics interest has grown.

Something that needs to be addressed, however, is the single game marketing. I don't think you will find many more connected and passionate fans than myself (as is probably the case with most on this website), and I find it hard to see and hear game promotions for upcoming events. I don't hear a build up on tv, radio, or social media. Admittedly, I'm not a print subscriber, but I do read most of the online sports sections that cover UNI athletics. I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be much buzz being created for students attending the SFA game Tuesday. This is our only ESPN2 home game all year! I get that it's a unique time, but if there aren't students there, the place will be tempered down in enthusiasm. I think season ticket holders will show up, but we don't know that yet. The best chance for atmosphere and butts in seats is from the students for this game...and I would hope there is more than just President Ruud handing out doughnuts (good start).

As a season ticket holder (and one who has been a strong encourager of getting fans to participate in this as well), I get to the games b/c I'm engaged and I know when game times/dates are. But I'm a die hard fan. They announced a Tuesday game once on Saturday during the game. No video promotion. There was no mention (to my knowledge) of the basketball games while at the last home football game (video wise). There is no build up whatsoever. You have a quality product that sells itself, but it has to be able to catch the eye/ear of the casual fans.

The progress made in season ticket sales has been phenomenal, but it can't stop there. It needs to be built up on a game by game basis and through tv, radio, print, and especially nowadays, social media. There hasn't been anything on social media from UNI athletics and we are less than 36 hours from game time! Please, UNI marketing, do what you can to build these single game events up. Yes, there is a difference between Dubuque and SFA...so please emphasize the importance of this/these games.

Anyway, I needed to get this off my chest. The AD has come a long way and I'm only bringing this to light because I'm so passionate about the university, athletics, and personal connections/history I have with it. Please take this less as criticism and more and constructive feedback...the fans aren't seeing the single game emphasis/attention.

Let me add that I'm a fairly regular listener to OPR and I do hear ads on there. However, I don't know if the casual fan is in tune to his show daily for the full hour (they should be though ).

Hope we have a good crowd on Tuesday. Thanks, PTTB, for caring.

And for the record, I was at the game on Saturday largely because of PTTB made it possible for me to share season tickets with others who can't make most games.

I thought that UNI did a good job of promoting season tickets/UNC game this summer (Schofield coming on OPR a couple times, emails, other social media), but that marketing effort has all but stopped or is very different to "promote" upcoming games.

As we have discussed on another thread, it feels like the SFA game is an afterthought and given its time, day of the week and being on ESPN you would think you would have heard more about this and that they would be doing more to attract students/fans.

This should really be brought to their attention. I move for bombardment of tweets to the athletic department and or dannen

The lack of in-game advertising is amazing to me. It's free! Throw it on the board with an announcement each half of something. There are plenty of timeouts. Yes, if I'm at a basketball game, I'm there to watch basketball - but I have no problem hearing about the upcoming football, volleyball, or other sporting events. I didn't even notice the SFA announcement until after the game yesterday, I must have just missed the one PTTB referred to. Sadly, I can see why students aren't excited about games, the University itself doesn't seem to be at times.

That's all that was promoted. No other game was ever talked about at all. Just a "Buy season tickets so you can get UNC tickets!". That was their entire marketing campaign

I agree. I can't imagine casual fans hearing about upcoming games unless they actively seek out that info.

and I too think they should do more cross-promotion at games. For instance, there have been a few volleyball matches following football games where one's FB ticket would give fans free admission into volleyball (I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case this coming Saturday as well), but they only ever announce it once, if at all. (sure, that doesn't generate any more income, other than perhaps concessions, but still).

Also, there have been at least two games where they have had some sort of 50/50 raffle, but I haven't heard a thing about it other than when they have put the winning ticket number on the video board. I don't even know WHO it is that is selling those tickets, let alone where or when to buy them. Kind of tough for them to make much money on that if no one knows where to get tickets.

                    Re: Attention UNI Athletics Marketing

It has always been amazing at the lack of marketing we have seen at this university. My biggest issue has always been how they try to get students to attend the games. Back in 2007 (a year before I was to graduate from Muscatine) a couple friends and myself decided we wanted to do something special with the student section. We felt there had to be a way to make a better atmosphere during games. We branded the name "the krazies". We made t-shirts for home and away games so that we would either all be in white or black. It was amazing the response we got and how many more kids were coming out to games simply because of the "krazies". Everyone felt like they were included and it made for a great environment. Something simple like this would help out a lot. Before we created this group it was always a group of 10-20 "super" fans who would make up shirts (which we already have a group like that now at UNI). If everyone feels apart of the group in the student section it could make for better attendance and a better atmosphere. Having the students in one color also just looks bad A.

                      Re: Attention UNI Athletics Marketing

They quit doing t shirts because people complained that they shouldn't be singled out for choosing not to wear the shirt or participate in the student section. Made it too much of an 'insider's club'.

This is the ridiculous crap that happens. It's sickening.

I have lots of other thoughts too, I'll post them later today.

Those kids can stay at home then. Make a single shirt, maybe 2 and that's it. Brand the student section under a name "the Den" or something Panther'ish. Have the athletic department hand out a shirt to each incoming freshmen in the dorms and have extras sold at the book store. I don't give a @$&) if a kid at that point doesn't feel included. Having a single look is what the athletic department should go for. Trying to be so liberal that everyone is included is completely ridiculous when it comes to something that little.

Great post, PTTB. You and I are in the same boat. I would add, too, that if we want to keep this ball rolling (and keep our coach), we need to up our marketing game.

There are so many posts on social media made every day by UNI Athletics and the UNI main Twitter account. I can't for the life of me figure out why not one has been about the game tomorrow.

I did have one thought, and there is no basis for this thought so I have no idea if it's true, but I wonder if the academic faculty poses a problem since asking students to come to a 7am tip would mean missing 8am classes. Do you think there's some push-back there? Again -- just a thought.
"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

Maybe I'm wrong and don't understand the full audience of OPR but it seems like that audience already knows about coming UNI events and advertising would be "preaching to the choir"
"I think they're very good," Farley said of the preseason top 25 Hawkeyes. "But so are we."
