McDonnell is going to very important too, but at least we'll have more experience at the 4. Plus I don't think it's as important for guards to gain size and muscle, so I think it's more realistic for Haldeman and McCloud to make an impact. Either way, I'm pretty much ready for October already. Hopefully this last fades in our minds sooner rather than later.
Yeah, there is no way to reverse what's done. We have a solid 8 man rotation with 5 players that need further improvement. The top 8 have considerable work ahead as well with 4 of them there Freshman that haven't played in a Division I game...

By my count we have 4 proven players, even though what we are giving up is more than likely better then what we have to replace it, I am excited to have a 9-10 man rotation instead of a 7 man rotation.

I see us being an experienced ball handling guard short. That is a void that needs to be filled IMO. JUCO, grad transfer, whatever. This is really where the Austin transfer screwed us, for next year.

The good news is, we have two bonafide studs returning in JMo and Carlson, both have all-valley type potential. And I really like the depth and talent we have in our front court with Carlson, Koch, Ted, Dahl, and McDonnell.

You're assuming the freshman have enough to contribute. I'll bet a couple of them do, but there are bound to be growing pains. Have some realistic expectations for next year, and if we hopefully overachieve, be pleasantly surprised. Like other teams from the past, next years' team could be vastly improved between November and mid January.

Agreed. It'll be interesting to see how tough our nonconference is. If in fact McCloud starts like many are speculating, I wouldn't mind starting off slow, with games against lesser competition. I do think once he gets a few games under his belt he might settle in pretty well. Hopefully before conference play starts at least.

              Re: Next Year

I've been thinking for a while now that we'd go with McCloud as our starting PG next year, knowing that Jake is high on him. But after talking with some people close to the program, who are at practice consistently, it seems more like Haldeman will start at PG and McCloud will backup. And those 2, plus Lohaus will man the 1+2 spots for us.

That said, I see the breakdown looking like this:
              Starters:
              G- Haldeman - 25 min
              G - Lohaus - 30 min
              G - Morgan - 35 min
              F - Carlson - 30 min
              C - Koch - 25 min

              Bench:
              G - McCloud - 20 min
              G - Brown - 10 min
              F - McDonnell - 10 min
              C- Dahl - 10 min
              C - Friedman - <5 min
              G - Knar - 0
              F - Conrey - 0

What has everybody heard about Dahl? I am excited about his size, the guy is huge, but I'm kinda afraid he might be an Austin Pehl type, who just doesn't develop as well as we thought he would. Agility just can't be taught.

I agree with the starters. I would guess the bench: McDonnell 19-20 min, McCloud 17-18 min, Brown 11-13, Dahl 5-7 min, and Freidman 1-4 min. Knar 0-1 and Conrey very little. R/S T. Lohaus. The recovery of McDonnell will be critical. A graduate transfer would change the lineup and could buy Brown a red shirt season.

It's pretty funny that you only need to change a few letters to make:
                    Austin Pehl, become Justin Dahl.

But I believe the comparison ends there. Justin averaged 19 points, and more impressively, 17 rebounds per game his senior year. He had the 8th most rebounds in a single season in Minnesota HS basketball history! And 3 of those seasons ahead of him were Cole Aldrich.

From what I hear, he came in this year a little heavy (around 270), and has since dropped like 30 pounds and moves WAY better now than at the beginning of the season.

Rebounding machine. Think if Marvin was 6 inches taller. Takes great angles to rebounds and boxes out well. Still a little green offensively, has a limited numbers of moves around the basket, like most young post guys. But his size alone should make him a formidable defender, even from day 1.

I would probably compare him similarly to when Jordan came here, but maybe a step better as a rebounder, and a step behind as a offensive playmaker.

Agree. I'm just not sure we'll go the grad transfer route. I think more than ever, the last 24 hours have shown us how the strength of our program is when guys come in, take ownership of how we do things, and grow into phenomenal young men.

I just don't see us prioritizing a 1 year, mercenary-type grad transfer. I see us more likely to use the scholarship to bring in a traditional transfer like Wes, or Paul. Or simply using it for another freshman scholly next year.

Yeah, we would have a larger pool of talent to chose from in the 17-18 season. I see a considerable amount of inexperience in 16-17. A transfer would help the core players and give Brown a chance to adjust to school/Division I BB.

On jakes call in show last month when someone asked about the redshirt freshman Jake said Haldeman is going to be something special and can do a little bit of everything including defensive skills. I heard he has scored a lot on the scout team. He has gained weight and put on muscle and we can assume he will keep progressing as will the other freshman. McDonnell is going to bring a lot to the team with his outside shooting capabilities and his game around the hoop. He passes well to. His knee injury will slow him down a little but he will be ready for November. Jake made a comment about Justin being a beast and no one can move him at all. And walk on Conrey has been shooting well. you have to think if they play against this group of guys everyday we should fell pretty good about their abilities next season. These 4 guys have had the experience of a lifetime this season and have been around players and coaches that know how to win and have taught them so many things on and off the court. They have been really lucky.

                              Yes to all.

On the scout team, Haldeman has been standing in as the other teams best player. Beane, Balentine, Baker, Taylor, ect. And from what I've heard, there've been times when our first team has failed to stop him. And his end of the shot clock ability to create a good look is top notch.

I've actually heard some mixed reviews on McDonnell. Around here, everyone seems to worship the kid. But I guess he's struggled to play well defensively this year, and doesn't move his feet well on D. That will limit his playing time on a Jacobson lead team. Remember Buss and his first 3 years here?

I really hope Dahl becomes an Egleseder-like monster down low. Having a guy like that, makes a swing 4, like Carlson or McDonnell a massive threat.
