It automatically goes to the #1 seed in the tournament.

    • Time for blind resume, these numbers are all from the NET profiles of these teams as of today (2/27/20)...

      Who has the better resume?
      NET D1 Record Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Road/Neutral SOS SOR Best Win Worst Loss
      Team A 35 21-7 2-4 2-2 7-1 10-0 8-6 120 40 31 (N) 223 (A)
      Team B 42 20-7 1-5 6-1 6-1 7-0 8-6 77 35 61 (A) 233 (A)

Trick question - I think we do (of course I may be biased)
      Team A is Utah State
      Team B is Rhode Island

      Here's UNI:
      NET D1 Record Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Road/Neutral SOS SOR Best Win Worst Loss
      UNI 44 22-5 1-1 4-2 9-2 8-0 8-5 100 43 17 (A) 206 (A)
I'm honestly not sure how our Strength of Record is worse than Utah State - we have a better D1 record against a tougher Strength of Schedule. Our best win is better than theirs. Our worst loss is not as bad as theirs. We have a slightly better road record. They have one more Q1 win than us, but they've also had four additional opportunities to get that Q1 win. We have two more Q2 wins than them. Having one more Q3 loss might hurt us a little bit, but I personally don't understand how most projections I've seen have them solidly in as a 10-seed and us as an 11 or 12-seed that will be out all together with a loss in STL. Rhode Island might be a little better off than we are, but I don't think by much. Someone tell me if I'm missing something here.

The regular season MVC champ gets a NIT bid if they do not win the conference championship and do not receive an invitation to the NCAA tournament.

If you download the UNI team sheet right now they have a overall SOS of 109 and non-con of 99.

The B10 teams are considerably worse when it comes to RPI than any other ranking so Iowa for example SOS is only #89 overall. Penn State's overall SOS is #110.
West Virginia and Colorado have not been doing us any favors lately. Both could be out of the top 25 soon if not careful.

WVU has lost 5 of 6. Beating Oklahoma on Saturday could help us in multiple ways.

Colorado just lost its second straight Q3 game. At Stanford on Sunday will be huge.

          • Fell to a 12 seed in today’s bracketology. Same seed line as the final first four game. That means if we didn’t have the assumption of the automatic we’d presumably be right on the cut line. Either just in or just out.

            • Wowza, we need Colorado to get it together!

              • Wichita losing last night really would have been helpful, but Temple looked clueless the last 4 minutes. Wichita's next 2 are tough road games - a Q1 and Q2. Those results could say a lot about their at large chances.

Also, we bumped up a spot to 43 in NET this morning

                • Yeah, last night wasn't ideal for the resume.
Bubble teams Purdue, Liberty, Wichita State, St. Mary's, USC & UCLA all won.
Colorado, Grand Canyon & Marshall all lost.

Also, ODU is #160 in the NET (one spot from falling to Q4), SIU is #157 (four spots from our home game with them falling to Q4), Missouri State is #130 (six spots from our road game with them falling to Q3), Valpo is #133 (three spots from our road game with them falling to Q3). If all four of those teams drop far enough our resume would then look like this:

                  Q1: 1-1
                  Q2: 2-2
                  Q3: 9-2
                  Q4: 10-0

Two less games in Q2 and two additional games in Q4 make the resume look much weaker. Oh the joys of being a mid-major...

On the flip side though, if those four teams can all stay where they are and South Carolina can move up 14+ spots (which is possible playing in the SEC) and Drake can move up 3+ spots then that makes our current resume look like this:

                    Q1: 2-1
                    Q2: 3-2
                    Q3: 10-2
                    Q4: 7-0

Would also be nice to face two top 100 NET teams on a neutral court in STL (Loyola is currently 98, Indiana State is 102, Bradley is 109) as those would all be Q2 games.

I still think we probably need to cut down the nets in STL to get in as I don't trust the selection committee one bit.

                    • Drake will easily move up those three spots by just (most likely) playing us twice in the next week.

                      • Not a great start to the day for bubble teams - Texas picks up a win over Texas Tech

                          • In the process, passed:
                            • Utah State, Arkansas (lost)
                            • Eastern Tennessee St (who won their regular season finale, so hard to see them passing us by end of season unless they win their conference tourney, which then it won’t matter)
                            • Alabama (even though they beat South Carolina)
                            • Rhode Island, Xavier (both play today)

We would be more like a 12 seed this year, so we would meet in a sweet 16 instead of Round of 32. But it would still be something to talk about.
I know we sit around and think about our program and what we've done in the past, but no one on the committee cares of thinks twice about our one big accomplishment how how a round number (10 years) should result in a potential rematch.

This is great but a lot will change by Fri with us not playing. (And then again next week after the MVC tourny with us not playing)
