  • If Jake goes....

This is going to sound crazy....

Maybe it's time to get away from the Mac tree and 'start over'. Go out and get the up and coming guy you really want, keep as much of the roster together as is feasible and do a mini-rebuild. It's not like we're starting from where Sam Weaver left things.

    Luke Murray
    Dennis Gates
    Drew Valentine
    Joe Krabbenhoft
    John Jakus

Just some names off the top of my head.

That's true, but if Green and the majority of the coaching staff stays, I still don't think we'd be hit by the transfer bug very hard. I don't believe we lost any guys when McDermott left (other than Doug, obviously). Sure, that was 15 year ago, but there's also hundreds of kids who transfer every year and we've never really had an issue with that. FWIW, I do think if he's offered, Jake is gone. I think there are only a handful of jobs he'd leave for, but I also think Minnesota is one of them. If he does leave, I'll wish him the best - he just better not hurt the program on his way out.

If we lost Jake and Green, it should absolutely be full send putting all that opened up money into Devries. Bringing him home would certainly save us from a nightmare situation.

Probably not even worth entertaining yet, but kinda interesting
He just signed an extension at Drake through 2028-2029. I haven't seen any specifics about a buyout, but I'm sure there is one. I realize we'd be getting some money from Minnesota in this scenario, but that might be better spent elsewhere.

How likely is Jake to go if he's offered?

I kind of like your thought process here; Dennis Gates is a guy I wish Jamie Pollard would have at least chatted with before offering the ISU job to TJ.

I mean, if he's going to take the time to interview and the money is right I can't imagine he doesn't take it. It's a P6 job that's even closer to 'home' than he is now.

            • Fwiw, Minnesota fans are very convinced they are getting Craig Smith out of Utah State.

              • Some insight from Nick Petaros at the WCF Courier - says that the AD Mark Coyle at Minnesota grew up in Waterloo and notes that the current staff is well connected in Minnesota. I wasn't aware of the AD connection until now.

He would take it. Not really in a position of leverage. Or not much to gain at least.

That would be my guess. Seems like a weird thing to do if you werent interested in taking it. Post Sweet 16 was very different.

                  • Interesting scenario. His oldest will be a senior next year and probably starting QB at Cedar Falls. Would the family want to move?

Wow, after seeing this I checked out the Minnesota message boards and there's a lot of Jake hate. Plenty of "how many people said no for us to talk to him?", "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and "would have been interested in him 10 years ago" comments. If the AD is listening to fans - Jake's chances of going there seem pretty slim.

On the other hand, the youngest is a better athlete and will be a freshman next year so it would be the perfect time for him.

I don't know, I feel weird about this one. I have to assume that Jake has had more chances and more looks that any of us would ever know over the last decade and none of them have really come out other than the A&M job where we know there was an offer and the money didn't work. Maybe this is the real one?

He'd also win like crazy there because the way the Big Ten is officiated would allow him to go back to the way he wants to play defense.

Yeah, Columbus High, a year behind Klieman (mid-'80s). Then played football at Drake.

I don't see an AD reading anonymous message boards and taking it into consideration. With a $14+m basketball budget (at least that was AY 20, the last year available for UMN's NCAA report), the donors, however ....
