Belmont had Cal Irvine on the ropes (granted this was a UIC down a starter and a rotation piece from when we played them) then Cal Irvine scored 67 points in the second half to win by 9. Remarkable.

On the ropes is one way to describe losing by 9 after being up 14 at half.
Irvine played the 2nd half like the played against us. They played the first half like they were Evansville playing, well, anyone.
Belmont had 4 rebounds in the second half.

It was still a double digit Belmont lead with like 10 minutes left. The last few minutes were just an avalancheOriginally posted by clenz View PostOn the ropes is one way to describe losing by 9 after being up 14 at half.

I watched the game. It wasn't the last 10 minutes. It was the entire second half. Belmont just managed to play an almost equal level of insane basketball until their wheels fell off. The entire 20 minutes of that second half it was clear Irvine was the better team and was going to win that game unless Irvine shot the same 12% from 3 and turned the ball over 10 times again. That didn't happen. Turnovers fell by 30% and the points off of turnovers for Belmont disappeared. 3 point percentage went to 45%. Irvine had something like 44 points in the paint.Originally posted by Wxcpanther View Post

All of that while Belmont went 11-22 from 3 in the second half on their own. They just didn't match anything inside. So it wasn't an avalanche; it was just the entire second half swinging to Irvine. Belmont had 0 second-half second-chance points and 8 points in the paint (to 26 for Irvine).
Statistically, Irvine didn't play any better than they did in Cedar Falls. The difference is we shot 7-17 from deep and 23-58 overall. Given the fact we are the #1 shooting team in the nation, yes a true statement, and Belmont shot 15-38 from deep and 32-69 overall it's clear the only difference ni the two games is the fact we managed to shoot orders of magnitude worse than our average and Belmont above their season averages. Belmont played potentially their best offensive game of the season, Irvine came out like we did against them, and Irvine managed to win the game going away in the end.

Valpo was down by 21 at Western Michigan then went on a 24-2 run at the end of the game. Won it on a half court buzzer beater 76-73."They keep saying that what really matters is not whether you win or lose, but how you played the game. The trouble is that the best way to determine how you played the game is by whether you won or lost." - Anonymous

All the more reason we need to continue to push for the MM players in that area, not a lot of local quality MM optionsOriginally posted by BCPanther View Post24th.
Behind The Horizon, Summit, Big Sky and Southland with no teams in the Top 100.
Just no excuse for that with location/budgets.

Valpo is an interesting one to me. They seem to be slightly overperforming, based on what was thought. Bradley just seems on the cusp of constantly losing lots of games, I can't figure them out. Their record implies more than what I think is there.

Got some realignment happenings. NIU and Toledo receiving interest from the Mountain West as football only members. The Valley would take Toledo if they were available, I would think. NIU would probably end up in the horizon. It's time to remove Evansville.
