It is a wildly underrated skill and he is incredible at it. He keeps the defender on his hip so well running that offense into the paint and then he is very good at that little floater in the lane if they do sag off him at all. He just puts a ton of stress on the defense. They do also run some NBA level screens and it does drive me nuts. But I guess if they only get called every once in awhile we are probably the idiots for not doing it too. When they come to Cedar Falls we have to get off to a hot start and get an early lead. Find a way to speed them up.

Yep. Last night, I remember a sequence early in the game where Stirtz did exactly that - kept the defender on his hip, leaned into him as he shot a little floater, made the basket and got the foul. Soon after, the same kind of thing happened but the defender was able to avoid the contact Stirtz tried to initiate, and Stirtz's little 8 foot floater wasn't even close. Happened again within a minute. If the contact isn't there, it throws him off pretty bad since he's more concerned about that than making the shot.Originally posted by PantherAlum09 View Post

Still very tough to defend. Have to make sure you're in a position defensively where he can't just keep driving to the hoop, can't dump it off to anyone for a layup, while also not being close enough to him that he can get the shot off and initiate contact without it looking like he's flailing.

I think he is going to be loyal to McCollum honestly. And I think Drake's system is just too perfect of a fit for him.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostI'm really interested to see if he stays at Drake after this year, he seems like like he might be loyal to his coach, but at the same time he could get paid big time by a power school.
However...McCollum is also going to get some calls and offers this offseason. And I would imagine a massive amount of money thrown at him as well.

He is reported to have been making 275k at NWMOSU. He can be a lot more picky with low and mid major programs going for him that are going to offer him the same pay to maybe 500-600k. Yeah, that’s still double the pay but not worth it for a situation he doesn’t like. Remember he was desperate for the MOSU job and they wouldn’t give him the time of day over the last 2 coaching searches.Originally posted by achrist70 View PostI'm not 100% sure about that, it took him 15 years to leave NW Missouri State so I don't think he would just leave for a big pay day, he would want the right situation where he thinks he can be successful as well.
However, going from whatever D+ is paying him and he has for facilities to even a lower end “high major” is going to take him to well over 1.5, it not well over 2, with a minimum of 5x the NIL budget and facilities.
Maybe he doesn’t take it. He was in an extremely unique situation before this jump that won’t exist again. One of the, if not the highest, paid D2 coaches with more money and resources than any other D2 making the same as a lot of D1 coaches. He’s now a mid major coach at a mid major school with mid major resources and facilities (even if they are good mid major facilities).

If Drake makes the tournament, and if they make some noise with a win or two over higher profile teams, then some P6 schools will call him. No tournament, being relegated to the NIT…my bet is he stays due to not getting the interest needed to get him to jump.Originally posted by PantherAlum09 View Post

With that system and familiarity with it, Drake is perfectly capable of upsetting a team or two and generating interest and $ for their coach. That’s IF they get in, and IF they win games.

He's got Stirtz as a bargaining chip. The time to jump is now.Originally posted by SteinPizza View Post

His recruiting behind this group is......less than impressive.

I hear you. I just have a hard time seeing him leave Drake for an A10 type job, and that’s all he’d get if Drake gets zero NCAA exposure and publicity. No Big 10, Big 12, or Big East team is going to try to sell their boosters and fan base on a guy with zero NCAA tourney wins, unless their top targets all bail and they’re really desperate.Originally posted by BCPanther View Post

Darian Devries never made it past the round of 64.Originally posted by SteinPizza View Post

One of the reasons he was able to do that was by winning in newsworthy, last second fashion against Wichita State (?) in a play in game. They also played (I thinkOriginally posted by Wxcpanther View Post
And he got the head job at West Virginia, which is a great basketball program.
it was UCLA?) close, and potentially could’ve upset them if one of their better players (Shaq Hemphill) wasn’t playing hurt. All that got Drake some national exposure and elevated DeVries as a coaching prospect. He turned down a few things prior to going to WV. You need national buzz to get to get noticed (even if brief) and make yourself sellable.
