This is my concern for D3 & NAIA transfers.Originally posted by Wxcpanther View Post
We also had a kid with similar credentials just come to us from the D3 level last year and, once he got healthy, play at a really high level.
Did Cael outperform expectations for a 6'1'' guard D3 transfer? Yes. But consider the impact Ben and Leon had, and ask yourself if you'd rather have had a third one of those.
Cael was a solid backup when healthy. But when I'm handpicking additions to the roster, I'd prefer something more impactful.
If you were using a baseball stat like WAR, Cael was a zero WAR. Replacement level player. Max was probably a 1 WAR. Let's get something more than that when bringing in someone with 1 year of eligibility remaining.

We aren't going to get Ben and Leon level hits with every transfer, especially given last year we had more opportunities for fliers, so it was easier to have hits and busts.Originally posted by orangetennis View Post

I 100% agree, I think Cael isn't the best comparison here, and we should be cognizant of these types of transfers. But mixed in with high potential not fully proven guys like Ismael, a proven absolute stud with experience at a lower level and at this size can absolutely be a contributor in the right situation. Which I believe we can be a right situation coming off losing Tytan and really needing some of that role, he will have an opportunity to prove himself.

It cannot be overstated that Cael spent multiple months this winter not playing basketball because of a knee injury right before the season. He was FINALLY getting to playing really good basketball the last month of the season, he was incredible in St.Louis. We don't make that comeback without him.Originally posted by orangetennis View Post

If he's 100% his season is very different.
He came on very strong late season.Winning is more fun than losing.

And Max missed the entire summer last year. You'll see the real Max this winter.
I too would love more Bens and Leons. May I direct you to:
