You are correct, a lot of great players at UNI are small town Iowa guys. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just taking a view contrary to some here, in a couple of areas:

      1. For the basketball program to continue an upward trajectory, the overall level of recruit needs to continue upward. That probably means more out of state players. The state of Iowa will have up and down years for producing talent, but the overall level of player will likely remain static (unless you're talking about the DSM metro area, which is in growth mode, and many of the schools have cash to put into coaches and facilities).

      2. Football and basketball are different. You're less likely to find an under the radar recruit (due to being rural) in basketball. Far less likely. Football, you can find them, and various UNI staff members have done a good job of doing so over the years. In football, that will continue.

Refute away if you want. I enjoy lively debate.
Yep,UNI is clearly trying to load up on walk on caliber players because one walk on, that has dreamed of being a Panther his entire life, signed a LOI.

If only Tuttle, Buss, the Koch brothers, Stout, McKowen, etc... had all been from large metros. Imagine how good they could have been. If you don't think that players like that can, and do, improve the trajectory of this program you're god damn nuts.

You have stated in the past, and no I really don't want to go find it but if you really want me to I can, that you don't like small town white kids being recruited. You'd rather see minority athletes from New York or Texas (Deon did work out pretty well, I guess). The reason it's constantly brought up with you is because it's something you say time and time and time again.

What I am trying to figure out is why some of you are complaining so much that we have a kid WALKING ON from Waterloo. It is not like we are giving him a scholarship. I am sure if he earns a scholarship he may get one in the future but I don't see the big deal here. Kid wants to come to UNI and help the program any way that he can without taking a scholarship. I am sure we have given scholarships to far worst players and people than him.

I'd much rather have Lincoln than the kid from Waterloo that Iowa just put on scholarship, fwiw. WAY better upside.

As I said, I just want guys that can make plays at this level (that's the key, this level). I don't care where they're from. You're more likely to find them in larger cities, due to population, and that they play against far better overall competition. That's white or black, doesn't matter. Of course you'll find good rural players, since good athletes are good athletes period. They're just more likely to come from areas with higher population densities. Also, the Koch brothers aren't from a small town in the middle of nowhere, they're from suburban Green Bay. Ever been to Green Bay? It's not huge, but would definitely count as a metro area if it was in Iowa.

Lastly, do you have something against minority players? That's not meant as a leading question, I just honestly don't know the answer from your posts.

Indeed, this has turned into a rather strange discussion. It is hard to imagine that anyone is really opposed to letting him walk on, but they just can't avoid the collision of overall recruitment policies. I love the fact that UNI is becoming the "go to" school for MBB players who stay in Iowa.

                Re: Incoming Recruits

In fairness I don't think anyone has actually complained about this player, other than possibly one post by someone who did not realize he was a walk on.

And in Steins defense I think the term he has normally used is small town iowa farm kids, not mentioning race, although it isn't too difficult to infer.

Carry on with the argument that isn't really there.

Does anyone really have a problem with really any walk-on? How does having a hard working kid who gets good grades, wont get in trouble and will work hard in practice with no expectations of playing time without earning it hurt the team?

So he turned down iowa and Iowa State? Likely the only way he was walking into carver or Hilton is if bought a ticket.

Can we stop pretending uni is now the prefered destination for the state's best?

OMG....you just took what was already a silly discussion to a whole new level of dumb.

Not one single person in this thread, even the most ardent fans of Lincoln, have even come close to proclaiming that he turned down ISU or UI to walk-on to UNI, much less that he is one of the state's best players.

There's no doubt in my mind that you're going to respond to this with a "woe is me, everybody picks on me" pity party of a post. Suggestion...look up the concept of self-awareness and use the new found knowledge of it when you post.

Not sure how ppl got confused but I think the original point was that some ppl on here were talking as if this kid will make a "impact" on the team. Obviously he will in some way shape or form but I think the point was for those ppl to cool it. The kid is a walk-on. a walk-on could make it on scholarship at some point but let's face reality. max played because he was a average college player with experience, a brain, and the biggest factor is because we were desperate for a body to plug in. A year after all that playing time.......nothing. that was all do to better recruits. It will mostly be the same for this kid. He'll get action if we need it But will mostly likely be practice team. That is obviously fine because if we have a walk-on playing we are either in trouble or everyone in the world missed on the kid.

Don't think it's been posted yet, but here is Lincoln's senior year highlight video. As I've said before, his ability as a post player to be able to shoot the three is a dimension that this team doesn't have depth at as compared to previous teams. I'm not projecting starters minutes, but just saying he adds depth to this team in the near future. Don't read more into it than that!

The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.
