  • Coaching Search...who's next? lets hear all the wild speculation

    I'll start with a few -

Scott Frost - to resurrect his head coaching career (currently on the Rams staff as an analyst)
Eric Schinander - DC at Boise State

Jeremiah Johnson - would have called him almost a lock at one point as almost the guy who was in waiting - DC at La Tech

All three former assistants of Farley

Jay Johnson - OC at Michigan State - 3 time all gateway QB at UNI kept Kurt Warner on the bench

I'm certain these are all pipe dreams but i'm curious who's all out there and would like to get thier first run at being a head coach but keeps getting passed over.

I know I'm in the minority on this but I would be OK with Brian Farentz as long as he doesn't call plays I think he's a good coach and has been around a really good coach for his whole life. I'm sure he has relationships with a lot of Iowa high school coaches which is a plus since we recruit a lot of Iowa kids.

I am pretty confident it'll be an outside hire and we need to be realistic. Nobody is leaving a Power League coordinator role for an FCS job and I don't think Nook is going to be on board with a Petrino style rehab job.

Early list of names that may come up--

      Brian Bohannon (Kennesaw State)
      Chris Winter (Wartburg)
      Todd Hoffner (Minnesota State)
      Curt Wiese (Minnesota Duluth)

If you've got a time machine to go get OL coach Brian Ferentz, I'm all ears.

He's not worth the PR hit after he became OC Brian Ferentz.

Cody Worley, OC at Army. Was a QB at Furman and coached at Kennesaw State, so he understands FCS - and at Army, figuring out a way to win with some institutional disadvangages.

I would like to see them give Glenn Caruso (St. Thomas head coach) a call. He has a pretty outstanding resume and would know the upper midwest pretty well I would think. Now would he see leaving for UNI as a big upgrade?

Is this a joke? My God, no, just absolutely not. Have some self respect.

Here is a prime candidate with a decent amount of experience including FCS level.

                Phil Vigil - Wikipedia

                Looks good overall.

Worth remembering right now that the national champion NDSU head coach took the linebackers coach job at SC this past offseason. The amount of money that these power 2 leagues have at their discretion spend on coaches is insane, at least until the House lawsuit issue is settled. I bet it will be somebody who's name I currently do not know, not that that says a whole lot because I am not an industry expert. It would be so funny if it was Brian Ferentz though, RIP to my inbox in my group chats - I would get absolutely cooked.

                    Rich Wright Northwest Missouri
four NCAA titles and appeared in eight national championship games since 2004.

I'm kinda liking the Wartburg guy. Chris Winter

I appreciate Wartburg had a nice run last year but I don't think that's even a consideration. He's a couple years into his first head job at D3 and he took over a program that was winning all the time.

NW MO state HC is an interesting option. I like the idea of the OC from army too.

I'd love to see us go with a dynamic OC type from a successful FCS school or D2.

if we want to get crazy Eric Sanders is coaching HS ball in FL

100% agree on anyone who's a coordinator at the next level...they all make a ton of money and don't take a bulk of the heat when things go wrong.

Whoever it is, I want someone who turns it around, takes UNI to the semis, then a title, and leaves for the Purdue job or something. Not someone who will be satisfied for being here the next 20 years.

Did some digging a few weeks ago and came up with some options mainly D2/Lower FCS:

Looking at replacement coaches coach at D2 Ferris State been there 11 years two nattys and was competitive with Montana last year.

Mercer coach was at Menoir-Reyna in D2 made the natty a couple times. Only been at Mercer 1 year but they are 9-1, similar sized school in Georgia but they are probably about 6th or 7th fiddle in that state.

Coach at Tarleton been there 11 years has them off to some decent starts they are in the playoff picture did coach at Sam Houston from 05-09 wasn't that great.

Northwest Missouri state coach is in 6th season and is 59-17
Oh, and let me make this perfectly clear to you people: you go to UNI, NOT IOWA. The Hawkeyes and their fans do not give a crap if you remain "true to them" or some stupid self-fulfulling bullcrap like that.-OTP

                              Lol.

A multi-time national champion coach just left to be a position coach at USC.

Might want to adjust those expectations to the real world in 2024.
