I don't disagree at all with that. However, within the context of what the expectations were - thanks to the standard that Sheriff, Mudra, TA, etc. set - 4 straight years missed playoffs, 9-9 in Gateway play his last 3 years, and finishing T3rd (4th after tie break), 3rd, 4th in a 7 team league is/was "dark"

Now compare that to the last 7 years, it doesn't seem so dark anymore.

I'm not going to sit here and ***** if Paup is hired. Or if someone like Scott Frost is brought back - though I'm not entirely sure I want an image rehab job, but at least Frost has enough outside of UNI/Farley to bring different ideas and ways to do things. I'll support them and hope for the best, just like I did with Farley.

I'm just ready for the air to not be stagnant and smell like a locker room anymore, literally and metaphorically. I'm hoping the reno and new coach does both of those.

What are people's opinions on when this gets done?

Can they have someone named prior to the Dec 1 signing date?

Monday, Nov 25th would be the ideal date. After MF coaches his last game and before signing date.

Could this get done that quickly? All the coaches are working next 2 weeks.

Mike Furrey is in coaching, I think he he currently at South Carolina. Could be interested? I think you gotta kick the tires on Scott Frost for sure.

I'll go a step further. It has to be Frost if he's interested.

There's no question he lost his way at Nebraska. That's just a crazy job, full of more pressure than maybe any other football job in the country. Put on top of that he was a former great player and the pressure only builds.

I think, if he wanted it, he could have a ton of fun coaching at a place like UNI for a few years. And with that buyout, it's not like he needs the money.

As you implied, it's a longshot, but I think you at least have to ask.

That is one thing that Farley doesn't get enough credit for is the talent he brought in on his coaching staff. I do think the smaller operating budget (in comparison to our competition) has probably hurt our ability to get the top assistants that we used to get on a yearly basis.

In an ideal world yes it would get done that quickly, but unless we hire someone who isn't coaching right now or on staff right now. I'm not sure that will happen.

That would be an incredible hire but might be well below his profile. He was in a crap situation at Nebraska. Expectations were way too high for what he had to work with.

Not as though he's had administrators knocking his door down the last 26 months He went damn near 2 years without a job before he joined the Rams as an analyst.

I wouldn't hate the hire and I think he likely would do well here, but let's remember he has a 22-38 career record in games coached outside of the months of September 2017-January 2018. He spent 2 years at UCF and went 6-7 in his first season, meaning he had one recruiting class that was true freshman the year he went 13-0. Yes, he got the roster to win the games but he was handed a pretty damn good program. Yes, 0-12 in 2015 the year before Frost got there. However, leading up to that they had gone 81-60 under George O'Leary , played in 7 bowl games (including winning the Fiesta Bowl in 2013), and won their conference in 07, 10, 13, and 14 while also winning their division in 05 and 12. Something clearly went sideways for O'Leary in 2015 after his first 11 years going well. I have no idea what it was, but it went sideways hard. The roster was still clearly talented. There was 2 freshman in the top 10 for yardage on offense. There were 7 players that accounted for 40+ points. 6 of the 7 were on the roster/recruited before Frost. Top 3 TEs were all seniors. 4 of the 5 OL were juniors or seniors. The center was a sophThe QB that year was sophomore McKenzie Milton who was a 3* with few offers out of HS in the class of 2016. He did say he picked UCF because of Frost. 2017 was an outlier in his career, helped by the talent/experience around him. He completed roughly 100 more passes than year than his freshman and follow up season. Threw for >4k yards at 67% but never crossed 2600 or hit 60% in any other season. He threw 37 TD that year, he threw 38 the rest of his career combined. 16 of the 22 on the defensive 2 deep were juniors or seniors. The top 10 tacklers were all juniors and seniors. Every single player with more than 1 INT were juniors or seniors.

Again, I realize Frost got them to perform. All credit there. He was set up to fail at Nebraska. No one outside of the delusional Nebraska fans thought it would work. I think he works here, and many places, far better than Nebraska. Though I disagree with the "far below his profile". His profile outside of that 5 year run with UCF/Nebraska (again, I know you can't take it away) are GA at Kansas State, position coach at UNI, position coach and then short stint as OC at Oregon - then UCF/Nebraska. Whatever his profile may have been 2017-2019 it isn't that anymore.

All fair points. I would be excited about the hire, but there are probably better fits in terms of career trajectory. I’d rather get a guy on the way up than the way down. I’m sure that’s why he’s an analyst now.

Bobby Petrino completely turned Missouri State. I wouldn't consider him 'on the way up'.

Would Levar Woods be a stretch, special teams coach at Iowa. Played high-school ball in northwest Iowa. Won a few games in the dome in high school.

He's not taking the giant pay cut. He's got a pretty damn good gig in Iowa City.
