Because of the TV and internet outage at my hotel last night, I was at a sports bar in Davenport and Iowa was up late and he turned to his girlfriend and said, "This one's in the beg, even Alford can't screw this one up!"

That's a typical Iowa fan...they can't appreciate anything. Even in the face of beating their 5th ranked opponent, this moron was focusing on a negative. That's why Iowa fans, by their nature can never be happy. They will always find fault with the best of circumstances.

Before their game in Bloomington last weekend, Alford said that visiting there wasn't the "same" becasue the General wasn't there anymore. A very telling comment, IMHO.
Interesting. This was something I've never thought of. Knight's firing at Indiana was a bad deal and that could have soured Alford to Indiana.

Point taken Ames, but I think the job in Iowa City probably qualifies for one of those few 'dream' places that Mac couldn't turn down, just like UNI was. Time may tell.

2317, I think the Alford situation has to be viewed seperately from normal "Hawkeye" stuff. He's not liked, for both on and off the court reasons, and I can't blame anyone for that. I'm as big a Hawkeye fan as you'll find (same goes for UNI, don't get on my back), but I won't spend a DIME to see that team as long as that jerk is there. In fact, I have a lot of respect for people who stay away, and are still critical of Alford despite the winning...it means they really believed in the non-basketball reasons they didn't like him, and are being consistent.

Who wasn't a huge Hawkeye fan growing up? I was and then I became a Panther. That's where my loyalty lies now. But, if Iowa offered me a job for 5-8 times more than I was getting paid right now...I could put some black and gold on and learn the Iowa fight song. It's not a slight to UNI...it would just be hard to take to lose such a beacon for the UNI program right as it was taking off for new heights.

(But, this type of thing happened at Gonzaga too. They had some success, Monson left, Few (Monson's top assistant) took over and look where they are now. Maybe that could happen for UNI and Jacobson as well?)

What non-basketball reasons were those? Pierre Pierce? A coach of a program gives kids second chances everyday at many colleges across the country. What about Berryman? Hill? What about Sapp at UNI? What if he had broken the law in Cedar Falls as a member of the Panthers after Farley had given him a second chance...would their be this same level of animosity toward Coach Farley? I don't think so. So why is there for Alford? I think it goes back to the fact the Iowa fans don't like a guy who played for the Hoosiers coaching their team. They still see him in crimson and red. They think his allegiances still lie in Bloomington...but I think you're right...he's a Knight guy...not necessarily an Indiana guy.

I never thought we'd have this conversation on this board. It's really out of control. You'll never like him...I get it. But I know the man...and I probably won't change my mind either. So...as I've said before...civilized minds can disagree...and let's drop it.

Reed can go find this in a thread relating to NDSU (cause Reed loves finding old posts, cause thats what Reed's do ), but in an article in a ND newspaper Hartzell flat out said if Mac leaves coach Ben is the replacement. Not speculating on if he's leaving, just responding to the coach Ben comment above

So did anyone hear that Tom and Katie are splitting up. We should discuss that rumor to death also.

2317, it has to do with Pierce getting a pass (and having his hand held and defense practically led by Alford when he was CLEARLY guilty) becasue he was a good player. It has to do with the commonly believe and coroborated story that Alford sat the first victim down, under the auspice of a 'prayer session' to convince her not to press the matter any further. It has to do with Alford's constantly 'prickish' attitude. It has to do with his throwing players under the bus rather then taking responsibility onto himself. It has to do with recruiting players who are unable to make the grade, are constantly in trouble, and fail to live up to any 'moral' standard whatsoever.

Would much of that be forgiven and forgotten if Iowa had been winning all along? Probably, but that's true of pretty much every school. The fact is, they're winning now, and people STILL have the same feelings, which is both consistent and understandable.

You're not being very fair here...if Alford deserves the criticism, then Iowa fans are being 'negitive' and if he doesn't then they're impossible to please. SOMETHING has to be the acceptable reaction.

The original rumor I read on the net said that Tom's people would deny everything until the baby is born and he gets her a house close by his.

I knew they wouldn't last. Brainwashing can only last for so long.

I personally think Steve Alford should go hunting with Dick Cheney. I also heard he was involved in Princess Di's "accident."

People need to comment that Greg McDermott can only recruit Iowa HS players that no one else wants, or undersized centers that Minnesota doesn't want. Then McDermott won't be good enough for Iowa. Already probably some Hawkeyes fans that believe it already.

If Iowa loses in the first or second round of the NCAA Tournament, Alford might look less attractive.

Bob Bowlsby and Bill Krause both love Coach McDermott. Dana isn't leaving Creighton. Sorry for the bad news. Greg will look great in black and gold!
