    Northwestern isn't state funded.

Guy, all I'm saying is that while Creighton has some donors with big pockets, Iowa can match them man-for-man, and probably exceed them. It's just a much bigger school, with more almuni who have some deep pockets.

I mean comon, I know we all love the Valley, but Iowa has more...
    1)Money
    2)Alumni
    3)TV money
    4)Merchandise money
    5)Season Ticket money
    6)Endorsement money
    7)Advertising money

....then a school like Creigton, or any MVC school can ever match. If it came down to pure dollars making the decision, and Iowa decided they'd use all available resources to get a coach, it's not a contest.

Personally, I don't think they'd break the bank to get Altman, and Iowa isn't gong to spend like some of the BIG boys in the country (USC, for an example), but they can hang money wise with just about anybody not named Michigan or tOSU in the midwest. Think of the sheer numbers of doctors and lawyers ALONE coming out of that school. Look at the stadium project they're in the middle of, and they aren't using a DIME of state money. There is plenty in the coffer there if they want it.

I think our 'anti-Iowa' attitude around here is keeping us from looking at the situation objectively.

An educated guess says state funding is only partially relelvant. The taxpayer may pay Alford's base, but it's private money which funds the major portion of his pay, either directly or indirectly. It's always about private money. Anyway, don't mean to get us too off track...GO PANTHERS!

You tell me ..Iowa or Indiana Opens up at 3-4 Times what he making now....?

He will definetly Listen and this decision at the end of the Season, will be a hard one....Windows of oppurtunity only open sometimes once...
Was Mac's window open last year? Most definitly! Is it open this year? Most definitly! He can probably go get a better job this year. Will his window be open next year? I would bet money on it! Imagine what kind of job he can get with 4 consecutive NCAA appearances?

These opportunities you speak of, yes, they sometimes only open once unless you open them every year as does coach Mac.

          Your right Jeg,
The job Mac wants will be there when he wants it. He's not a Jeff Lebo type that had to jump at the money at Auburn after one great season because the cupboard was bare. Mac's stock may be even higher next year if he can take young guards to the tournament, because that is much more difficult than taking young inside guys.

          Experienced Guards Win Games!!

I don't think season ticket money is as much, but other then that, I completely agree. There is no way Iowa can't match them and exceed if they want. If they think he is the answer, they can double what he makes now.

Iowa wont pay over 2 million in total salary, benefits, and bonuses for Dana. Cause that would be double.

Why wouldn't Iowa do that? 2 million in all that stuff isn't that outragous these days. I apoligize I said double, when it might be 175%, that was stupid of me. If you want to be very critical, save it for some one else. If Iowa wants Dana, they will pay it. I could be critical of some things, but I won't.....not yet.

I'll be more pissed if Iowa spends $2 million on a coach than I will be if they keep Alford. No school should be shelling out that kind of money for a basketball coach. It's insane.

Go easy Lil Panther & Bjac, and me for that matter. We're fighting about whether a private college from a minor metro area can compete with a BCS school in a BCS conference. Think logically. That having been said, we're all on the same team here, so to speak, even if lively debate is what this is all about.

P.S. No offense to Omaha. It's MSA is bigger than Des Moines' and I'm a Des Moines native. Just stating facts.

TH, they won't. BUT, they already spend close to $1.5large. You could make a case for it being insane, but, always put yourself as close to the revenue stream as possible. If you have responsibility for it, you deserve a cut, it's that simple. Alford/Ferentz/McCarney and Mac etc. aren't classic "state employees" in that regard.

in dollar amounts (which is hard to believe were talking about seeing as mac and dana have good jobs and alford isnt gone yet). iowa wont give a mid major coach like mac 2 million dollars. i dont know how much dana makes but he wont get that either. for a mid major coach to move up theyd give him from 750,000 to 1.25 mil depending on who he is, where hes from and how much he makes now. macs probly looking at a mil or less from them, iowas not giving him a 1.75 million dollar raise if he goes. dana depending on what he makes now and his continued sucess might get more. colleges renew contracts with raises all the time so a raise would be in order eventually and they would make big money after a few years or a few big wins like wright at villanova (and his continued success of that program). either way mac or dana wont be making 2 mill next year if they go to iowa.

You get offered Duke, Indiana, UCLA, North Carolina, Kentucky, or Kansas I can see your "once in a lifetime" point. But you're talking about Iowa. They're working on their first Big Ten Championship since the 70's and haven't even been to the title game since the 50's. He's even lived in this state most of his life to witness first hand how very critical Iowa fans can be if things aren't just perfect. The Iowa gig has a ton of baggage, and I imagine it would take a ton of money to get McDermott or Altman to seriously consider it. You've heard people talk about the "perfect situation" in relation to Mac taking another job sometime. In my mind, the Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska jobs seem to fit that bill a little more than the job here in Iowa City should any of those become available sometime soon.

expectations would be tough to meet, ferentz came in a good situation, the team sucked when he took over. there were no expectations for him to turn it around for a little while cause they were awful. tom davis left the program in the middle of the road big ten team and alford hasnt improved on that like expected. if mac could make them championship contenders(haha) it would satisfy people like ferentz does with football but if he doesnt he'd be in the same boat as alford.

With the exception of Duke and Kansas,You can say the same as far as length of Time between Championships, for all those schools, give or take a few years...

If you going to be critized, it is easier at 800,000 vs 180,000....Easier to live with.....

I agree with Wisconsin and Minnesota...But Mac is a "IOWA GUY"...and it looks like it could be open sooner than any Others....
