I'm not sure making $800,000 makes taking crap from fans/media any easier. More money = more stress in my humble opinion.

Mac gets offered the Iowa job he will be gone and Jake will go too..... And that will be a Tough Decision because I know they both Love Cedar Falls....
[QUOTE]
I realize we are way off in hypothetical land here, but I agree with this statement and I particularly am interested in other's thoughts on the "Jake will go too" portion of the statement. If all these dominoes fell into place where would UNI turn? I think it is assumed IF Alford goes to Indiana, IF Mac goes to Iowa that Coach Jacobsen would take over at UNI. I tend to disagree, I think he follows Mac to Iowa.
Speculate with me if you will. If Coach Mac and Coach Jacobsen are out of the picture where would Hartzell turn for a coach? I must confess part of my asking is because I feel there is an assistant coach in the MVC with local ties (Not UNI ties) that I think would be an excellent candidate. Just curious as to what others think would transpire if the hypothetical scenario occured.
Before I get the responses bashing me for not thinking about this year and wishing for Mac's departure that is not what I am doing. I am completely focused on this year's team. (I actually had a post earlier stating we were all getting ahead of ourselves and ignoring the Indiana State game). I want Mac to stay for the next 25 years and continue what they have going or even build on it, but reality tells me if offered the Iowa job he'd be crazy not to take it.
I am in no way saying any of this will happen, merely playing the "what if" game. Play along with me if you so choose......by Odeon. It's illegal in nine countries. Yep, it's made with bits of real panther. So you know it's good."

How about Ben Miller? Eldon's son and current assistant at Missouri State. Ben was a graduate assistant and has a Master's from UNI. He's a CF High graduate and knows the area. He was also on Roy Williams' staff at Kansas.
I don't even know if he would have an interest in an opening (which we currently don't have - and hope we don't ever) but he's be good to talk a look at."10% of life is what happens to you, 90% is how you react to what happens."

Ben Miller would probably be a good candidate. Does he have any head coaching experience?
This coach with the local connections I was talking about is Chris Jans who is the lead assistant at Illinois State this year. For those of you that don't know he is originally from Fairbank, IA (Wapsie Valley). His resume is pretty impressive in my opinion...obviously I am biased however
Chris Jans brings a wealth of experience and success with college basketball into his second season with the Redbirds. In his only season at Chipola Junior College, Jans led the Indians to an impressive 32-5 overall record, its first Panhandle Conference Championship in 10 years with an 11-1 record, its first FCCAA State Championship in 16 years and a sixth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.
Prior to Chipola, the 36-year-old Jans served two years as the head coach at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. He guided Howard to an overall record of 29-4 in 2003. The Hawks finished the regular season with a national ranking of No. 15 after climbing as high as No. 2 earlier in the year. In 2002, he led the Hawks to an overall record of 20-10.
During the 1998-99 season, he was the head coach at Independence Community College, guiding the Pirates to a 22-10 record and a second-place finish in the Kansas Jayhawk Eastern Division with a 14-4 mark.
Jans received his first head coaching position at Kirkwood Community College, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in July of 1996. Inheriting a team that finished 11-20 the previous season, the Eagles more than doubled their wins, finishing 25-10 and earning Jans the Region XI Coach of the Year award. Kirkwood won both the conference and regional championship in addition to qualifying for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, a first for the Kirkwood program.
Building off the momentum of his first season, Jans led Kirkwood to another conference and regional championship in his second season before claiming the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship. Kirkwood finished the season 31-6, while Jans was awarded both the Region XI Coach of the Year and the NJCAA National Coach of the Year.
In his six seasons as a head coach, Jans has accumulated a 159-45 record in addition to winning a national championship at the age of 28.
With the Redbirds Jans returns to Division I, an area where he also has experience. From 1999-2001, Jans was an assistant at Idaho where he served two years under head coach David Farrar.
Jans began his coaching career at NCAA Division III Elmhurst College, in Chicago, Ill., in 1992. He was an assistant coach for two seasons before taking a similar position at NAIA Grand View College, in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1994. Jans served two years at Grand View before receiving his first head coaching position at Kirkwood in 1996.
Jans played at Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, from 1987-1991. He was a three-year starter and captained the team his senior year. Jans helped the team to a 47-25 record while breaking 16 scoring records and two NCAA Division III records for three-point shooting. Jans graduated from Loras College in 1991 with bachelor of art degrees in both Marketing and Finance.
He is a native of Fairbank, Iowa.
Three of the programs he was the head coach of currently are ranked either #1 or #2 in the nation at the Junior College level. He has recruited and developed big time talent (anybody ever heard of Jekel Foster?). At some point he is going to take that next step up and whoever gives him that opportunity won't be sorry. He'll probably kick my a** for posting this, but I'm just playing the "what if" game so what the hell.
And yes, I hope Mac stays and if not I hope Coach Jacobsen wants the job....by Odeon. It's illegal in nine countries. Yep, it's made with bits of real panther. So you know it's good."

If he were to leave, Greg McDermott has changed the dynamics of the UNI job, because it's now desireable to a head coach of a Mid-Con or Big South type team.Originally posted by Sex Panther...Ben Miller would probably be a good candidate. Does he have any head coaching experience?

I think he is pretty settled in there...has a girlfriend he seems to be serious with. Which if you know Jans is a rarity.Originally posted by panther2317Used to work UNI Basketball Camps in the summer with Jans, he's a good guy. Does he want to get back to the area or is he ok in Normal?
He has a real nice place and based upon the party I attended following the UNI vs ISU game in Normal he is in real good with the right people at ISU. It seems as if Moser is on pretty solid ground there so if Chris is looking to be a head coach again somewhere he'll need to move on at some point. All of his family is still in the Fairbank area so I think he'd love to get back closer if the right opportunity came up, but it is not something that he has to have in my opinion. He has coached all over the country (Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Idaho, Florida, Illinois) and has connections everywhere. This is mostly wishful thinking on my part, but I don't think it'd be a mistake if he was a candidate IF the job opened up in the future.

IF Mac were to leave, I agree with DWadle. Mac's performance has raised the bar, and raised the level of person we should hire. Why not an assistant at a big time school, ie. Kansas, N. Carolina, a Big Ten school, etc. I know they may view the job as a stepping stone, but we'd want someone with some ambition, in my opinion. No offense to Jans or Eldon's kid. I'm suprised nobody mentioned either Nick Nurse or Darien DeVries, wouldn't they be on the same level as Jans and Ben Miller?
