Some fun numbers now that 297 teams have played a game
The average for all of college basketball is 32% from deep - but apparently 35-40+% is a bad shooter.
The average from 2 point range is 52%
Per 100 shots that is
96 points from shooting 32% from deep
104 points from shooting 2 point shots
Now, that's for a team shooting 32%
As a team UNI shot 35% from deep last season
Over 100 shots that's 105 points
As a team UNI shot 46% from 2 last season
Over 100 shots that is 92 points
Based on UNI's shooting percentage we are actually giving up 13 points over 100 shots - or about 6-7 points per game.
If you want UNI to score 6-7 less points per game, feel free to have them shoot very few to no three point shots.
That's also ignoring that the mid-range jump shot is about the worst shot in all of basketball. If you look at research done on midrange shots vs 3 point shots it's quite staggering. Mid range shots produce, on average, about .75-.8 points per attempt. The three point shot produces about 1.1-1.2 points per shot. That's a roughly 25% loss of points earned per shot.
There is almost zero evidence to support shooting more shots inside the 3 point line that aren't within 7-8 feet of the basket
The game has changed. Guys are far more athletic across the board than they used to be. Guys are better shooters than they ever have been, across the board. The days of having 3 guys on offense inside the 3 point line a gone, because it doesn't produce results.

Although I missed it at first in this back & forth, Mudra did say ABOVE third place. My opinion is that first, second and third are all pretty good, but then only first gets you a trophy. With Creighton & Wichita gone, I had hoped to have more of those by now. Let's do it this year!

Pickford isn’t a three pt shooter and they don’t run the offense through the middle to these two so it won’t help. It certainly didn’t last night because the percentage was even worse and they took even more. And no, the percentages from two were far better and the two leading shooters from a yr ago (Mcdonnell and Dahl - led the team and only two over 50%) played token minutes and the other didn’t play at all. And I could care less that UNI was 137th in shooting 3’s. I care that they haven’t finished above third but once in nine years and hasn’t been above .500 in four yrs. Jacobsen isn’t getting it done in a league that has diminished in quality considerably. The fact that he continues playing this style is moronicOriginally posted by Wxcpanther View Post
You're ignoring my stat that I shared where they were 137th out of 353 D1 schools at 3 point shooting percentage last year. Why is that? Because it doesn't fit your notion that we were atrocious from 3 last year when we weren't? We were so poor shooting the ball from the field is because we were not good at shooting twos, not threes. A healthy Ty and AP are going to help that problem significantly this year.

Do you want me to screenshot the stat so you can see our numbers from two were actually that bad? Or would you prefer to just stay in your bubble of information that supports your thought process, which you would probably stay in even if I did post the stats.Originally posted by Mudrafan View Post

Creighton and Wichita St. They left the Valley and continue elevating their programs while we have slid back down to the rest of the valley and then some. And you really need to get your head out of the sand. He’s had one good year in the past nine. A second yr was a complete and total fail until a three day run in the conference tournament and a first rd out in the ncaa’s. Every yr an upstart makes the tournament. We did that year. Bottom line is, the program is in neutral in a ho hum conference.Originally posted by 06panther10 View Post

Because the talent level has dropped considerably, the shots that are taken are poor, we don’t have a pt guard, we don’t drive the basketball ever and never work it insideOriginally posted by Wxcpanther View PostWe were 303rd out of 353 for 2 point shooting percentage last year, 41.4%, just in case anyone was wondering

And I could do this all day with you but I’m just repeating the same thing over and over because herd mentality is far easier for most of you. You can keep your heads in the sand and keep believing in fairy tales. That’s your perogative. I deal in reality. A similar fate has transpired in football. But I digress.Originally posted by 06panther10 View Post

He shot 42% last year from the field and we finished under.500. But keep rooting for one player and his boxscoreOriginally posted by ofpantherandman View PostI love the assertion that the best shooter we've had since Benny Jacobson and the best overall player we've EVER had should shoot...less. AJ should take 20 shots a game

Not does chucking threes over and over again evidenced by UNI basketball under ben jacobsen the last nine yrs with one finish above third. One tournament with a second coming only from winning three games the last weekend in a one bid league after an awful year. Last three yrs haven’t been over .500. Plug that into your analytical machineOriginally posted by clenz View PostSome fun numbers now that 297 teams have played a game
