And I say that as a guy who 100% supports NIL and free transfers as the right thing to do. But it is going to royally suck for mid majors.

It’s like that small window after the AFL got a TV contract and started a bidding war with the NFL. For a few years until the common draft prior to merger, both leagues were drafting college seniors (and a few juniors) were offered tons of cash to sign … houses, cars, gas stations, too.Originally posted by SteinPizza View Post
If I had to bet, I’d bet the NIL offer. Right now it’s Wild West, with no market value having been set. There are insane amounts of cash being thrown around for no guaranteed return, at least in football. Upper level P6 in basketball is probably the same, at least to an extent. AJ will be a valuable enough “property” that someone may well throw him a ridiculous offer he can’t refuse."Well, that escalated quickly."

There it is - plain and simple. It's not equivalent. You lose a pinkie, I lose a hand.Originally posted by MVCBeat View PostThe “P5 guys transfer down too” argument doesn’t hold water with me. In the G League a Select Player can expect $125,000 plus callup pay.
A two-way Player can have a standard basic contract / select player pay of $125,000 plus NBA two-player pro-rated pay an NBA minimum contract. The NBA minimum is $582,000. Assignment players are NBA players with 3 years experience. This happens when players get hurt etc. A Draft Rights player that once drafted to the G league stay there until the season ends. They can make $350,000 in a five month season this player can be under 18 years of age. The under 19 crowd is not eligible to be drafted into the NBA. There are Affiliate players usually 4 on an NBA team to be assigned to the G league. Affiliates can advance into the parent NBA team during the season. The highest paid player in the G League is Sharife Cooper and he makes $462,629 in 21-22. Jalen Green made $500,000 in the 20-21 season.
A basic contract is $37,000 for a season or about $7,400 per month.
The article concluded amount of some contracts can vary depending on negotiation. Many players are not eligible for the NBA draft due to being under 19. Some players have agents or lawyers and others do not. There is no fixed salary cap, but some contracts are on a fixed scale, as well. The perceived value to the team also determines the terms of a contract.
Interesting article by Just Love Basketball dated March 11, 2022. So, there are complex contracts that vary. At least one was worth $500,000.

Did a search on Europe. Nikola Mirotic makes $4 million per season. The average pay in the top EuroLeague is $500,000-800,000. So yeah, good money to be made to gain some valuable experience.Last edited by BrockLesnar; 04-21-2022, 11:04 PM.

AJs goal is the NBA, I don't see him going to Europe. I also think he'd make more NIL money than G-League. I know AJ isn't in the same class, but Tshiebwe from Kentucky is rumored to be looking at $2M+, that just shows how much money is being thrown around. Yuri Collins transferring from SLU is rumored to be getting $200k from Tennessee. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd imagine a 2x Valley POY would demand more. I would rather see him go pro, but I think he goes back to college. If he does ever make it to the NBA, it would just be nice to have UNI in his bio, on the back of the basketball card, etc. With that said, if he's not going to a top tier program, I think the G-League would be beneficial developmentally (and he's not getting any younger).Last edited by CyCarp; 04-22-2022, 06:55 AM.To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

I don't disagree, but prior to this year, I don't believe we've ever had a guy transfer up. Maybe part of that is NIL money, but look at the two guys who are transferring up (assuming AJ doesn't go pro). AJ never would have been here if his dad wasn't here. He could have gone to almost any school in the country, we were lucky to have him and likely will never have the same situation again. While I 100% completely think they're just playing victim, the whole Carter situation was never going to end up good. I think he (or his dad) was going to find any excuse to transfer. I heard stories even before he got here about his family that reminded me of the Juwan McCloud situation - and it ended the same way. The only difference is that Noah was able to transfer up and Juwan transferred down. At the end of the day, we're early in the NIL and freedom to transfer era, we'll see what the next few years bring.Originally posted by MVCBeat View PostThe “P5 guys transfer down too” argument doesn’t hold water with me. I understand where you guys are coming from with NIL being a factor for AJ, but lets be honest AJ comes from a situation where that is probably has less importance on his decision then Tshiebwe or Hunter. Is it still a factor, yes, but I think getting a chance of playing in the NBA is more important to AJ then NIL money.

June 1 is the relevant date. That's the last date you can pull out of the draft.Originally posted by UNIpanther99 View PostWhat are the relevant dates involved here? By when will he need to declare for the draft? If he doesn't, when would he need to decide on returning or transferring?
He's already in the Draft and in the Portal so those coming deadlines have already been met.
As far as where he goes if he comes out of the draft, there isn't a true deadline other than when school starts.

I would be completely floored if he comes back. I know he said that's a possibility in his announcement that he's entering the portal, but honestly what would that do for his future? Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see him back, but when it comes to the best interest of his future, I don't see how it's beneficial for him to come back. He's already a 2x POY, there's nothing more he can do here, except maybe get to March Madness and go crazy on a national stage, but that's easier said than done as a mid-major.Originally posted by UNIpanther99 View PostWhat are the relevant dates involved here?
