  • The Athletic confirms that AJ does, indeed, have two years of eligibility as a group of us have been trying to say.

    Just not Ames please...

        Can't be.

Blogger guy said we were all wrong and that we didn't understand the rule of "You get another year no matter what"

To be fair. It's an incredibly stupid rule

          • I am still 100% certain he only has one year. The Athletic is wrong.

            • The idea of the rule is that we basically put everyone's eligibility on pause. If you weren't comfortable playing in 2020-21, or couldn't play, no harm no foul. NCAA knew no matter what it would be a weird year with no crowds in many places and a different postseason, etc. The year shouldn't count. But they still wanted people to play, so they said this year wouldn't count towards eligibility. If you could "pocket" the year, people would have been redshirting left and right because of the weirdness of the season. We never would have, for example, pulled Ty Anderson's redshirt. But there was no redshirt to pull.

AJ would have, under normal circumstances, gotten a medical redshirt that year. But he didn't because there was none to have. As a result, AJ hasn't used his redshirt season. He could still take a year off and play another year. But he cannot play two more years. That is how the rule works. Unless there is a waiver or something that AJ got that I am not privy to, that is how the rule works.

I did reach out to the author of the article to see where he got that information. No idea if he will respond, but I am curious. Because the way the rule is written, he is incorrect.

This is actually an interesting point. Why would we have pulled his redshirt in that situation if it cost us a year to play? I don't know what's right, but it does seem incredibly stupid to give a guy two years of eligibility for one year missed for different two reasons (COVID + injury).

                • It won't matter how many years are left. I'm pretty sure someone will take a chance on him In the NBA, G League, or Euro League that plays for the Euro Cup. He'll learn far more than what Duke or Nova can teach.

                  • There's no redshirt to pull because they year literally didn't count for eligibility.

When everyone else says one thing and you're the only thing saying the other the chances literally every other person on earth is wrong is VERY low.

It would be something if you'd actually cite any source anywhere that states otherwise other than "Trust me bro, it doesn't make sense to my brain" while discrediting everyone else, including those insanely connected to how it's working.

                    • The spirit of the Rule was or should have been that no one was going to lose eligibility for that year (I think that was even dumb).

But AJ did not lose eligibility. So getting a 5th year is really dumb IMO. Not saying hes not getting it.

                      • Also if he actually plays 2 more. The top 10 of NCAA career scoring leaders is going to be major PTSD for panther fans lol

Everyone isn't saying it. Just the people on this message board.

When you all started talking about it, I didn't think it was correct, but it made me reconsider. So I checked with a G5 NCAA head of compliance to see if my understanding was wrong. He confirmed that what I was saying was accurate.

                            • Thats much more logical at least. 2 never made sense but with the NCAA you never know lol

                              • I don't know how many different sources have to tell you that he's got two more years.

Medical Hardship Waivers are their own separate world, they are not a redshirt in any way. It's a waiver to have your eligibility extended due to the loss of a season due to documented medical hardship. More simply, the medical hardship waiver extends his clock to 6 years instead of 5.

He did not opt out of 2020-21, he lost the year due a documented medical hardship so he gets the extension of his eligibility clock to 6 years. The COVID year does not count as you, rightly, stated that eligibility was paused for that year so it's as if no one played a single game that year. Therefore, he gets to use what would hypothetically be his 5th season of play during the Medical Hardship 6th Year.

                                2018-19-Year 1-Freshman Season of Eligibility
                                2019-20-Year 2-Sophomore Season of Eligibility
                                2020-21-Year 3-No Eligibility Season Exhausted
                                2021-22-Year 4-Junior Season of Eligibility
                                2022-23-Year 5-Senior Season of Eligibility
2023-24-Year 6-Super Senior Season of Eligibility extended from COVID Year, Medical Hardship Waiver allows extension on Eligibility Clock

Anderson is a totally different case in that they either didn't try or didn't find a doctor to certify the medical hardship. It would have worked the exact same way for him if there was a documented medical hardship.

I get that AJ is an exceedingly rare case on this but that's how it works. That's how Jalen Coleman-Lands got a SEVENTH year at Kansas this year.

Again, there is almost no chance he uses 2023-24 but it is technically available to him.
