  • I'll cheer on both. My vote is Tuttle. I think Tuttle will really rally the community and get more fans back in the stands. He can recruit and develop the posts. He just needs smart veteran coaches around him. If he's successful = I think he stays for a long time. My guess is Green is gone the minute he has success.

I think randomly during the three different times Green has been an assistant coach at UNI, he never was during Tuttle's four years. I'm sure they are well connected, but guessing they aren't close. Would be different if they were together for four years.

    • I'm with you on Tuttle! He's got my vote. Jake was young when he took over and was successful. Once Tut got here our recruiting footprint has expanded more than ever which is a good thing.

I firmly believe they were together for at least his senior year as I recall them being at lunch with A.J. and Jake during the behind the scenes that year. BTW, that was a great series and a great year for it.

I can think of pros and cons for both and it’s great that we have options. I’ve made 100’s of hiring decisions over my career and very glad I’m not in Megan’s/Nook’s positions tonight.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the only year he wasn't assistant coach during the Seth years was Seth's freshman season.

          • There's a much better chance that we end up regretting not hiring Tuttle than there is that we don't hire KG.

My reservation about Seth isn’t his relative youth or lack of experience, but it seems to me (and I could be totally off base here), that when he came back from Europe and tried to install his up-tempo “flow” offense, the program lost its identity as the slow, defense-first program that was key to our prior success. I don’t want him to pull that again just when we are getting back to that winning formula.
I could definitely see it either way. I don't know if he would feel slighted though, I think him and KG have a good enough relationship (6 total years together at UNI in the past) to where he would understand, but I could be wrong. But I do think he's more than likely gone if KG is the choice like BC said. And that makes me lean more towards Seth being chosen because I would hate to lose him. And yeah, his and Ben's styles definitely clashed a bit but at least if he became the coach he would be in charge of his own vision.

I’m good with either, really. They’ll figure it out. I don’t think we are in any way screwed. It’s more normal to lose a coach than it is to keep one for 20 years. We’ll be fine!

                • We have lost so much of my Fandom in the last 48 hours with Jake, PJ, and Sonnen all gone. I just really don't want to lose Tutt, too.

Franklin is from Nebraska, doesn't really seem to move w/ urgency & looks for different qualities than what other AD's do. I could 100% see her going this direction. Having said that, he does have a strong background. It's one that needs a good look. I'm just excited it sounds like we have some outside interest & it may be pursued. It doesn't mean Tuttle doesn't get it, but you have to explore all options. But quickly. A strong AD already has a good feel for how this plays out in the event your coach leaves. She should have started working on a plan the day she took the position. Every hour that goes by is another hour, our current players are being bombarded by the outside.

Nebraska board seems to think he's a really quality guy. I know nothing about him, but Nebraska's run this year would speak volumes of the quality of coaches they had.

But the Nebraska board also thinks we have the smallest NIL in the league. LOL

                          • Breathe, people! LOL I know it's important to get someone in place ASAP before the portal opens and I'm sure Megan has a list for all coaching replacements stowed away. But you still have to get people called; interviews and zooms scheduled; terms met and lawyers and agents need to negotiate and sign off. It's only been 2 days,(USU's process for Jake probably took about that). I didn't expect anything before now unless a direct succession was in place. As tense as this is, it's also a positive sign about us if they have quality outside candidates trying to get in.

I don't know KG at all, but I'm not sure why anyone thinks he'd bolt after any immediate success. Longtime tenure to UNI/ISU...haven't heard of him being interviewed or mentioned in other coaching jobs the last few years...family seemingly still based in CF. He's also not a young coach in his 30's / 40's trying to make a name. Do you think he's just looking to make bank with a short P5 stint before he retires?

                            • If it's between KG and Tut, I think it has to be Tut.

I like KG and think he could be a tremendous head coach but I can see his hesitancy of taking the job if Tut is included in the package. He's not young, but basically the same age as Jake, so proabbly feels he has at least a decade or more of coaching left in him. He probably doesn't want/need a coach in waiting looking over his shoulder. And it could be that he has in own succession plan in mind of an MVC Player of the Year turned coach in another decade or so. The biggest negative the is that a KG hire likely means Tut is gone and with him any chance of retaining any semblance of the roster, plus possibly alienating one of our biggest boosters. If Jake, with his tenure couldn't get the practice facility over the line, KG likely isn't going to succeed with that either.

To me that means you give it to Tuttle with two conditions. First, he needs to tap into that booster connection to get more than cars provided for the athletic staff and get cash so that ground is broken on the practice facility no later than next spring, without this job has no chance of success regardless of who is in charge. Second, and I think Tut is smart enough to know this, he needs to bring a veteran coach in to be a mentor for some of the grittier parts of the job-practice planning and in-game tactical decisions. Jake had Rich Glas and then Jim Berry with him on the sidelines for his first half dozen or so years. A veteran to help with day to day details, not necessarily recruiting is essential for a young coach. Someone mentioned Brian Jones earlier. Good guy, has D-1 experience as a head coach, even took a team to the Big Dance and has plenty of years in the Valley. I'd throw a name that will raise some eyebrows but I think fits the bill for what I am thinking: Marty McKowen. Recently retired but won almost 700 games at a small school in the middle of a corn field where you don't exactly get to pick your players. He could serve for a couple of years to get Tut those nitty gritty details without being asked to hit the road for recruiting. With him on the bench Tut then needs to find a bunch of other young, hungry coaches with recruiting vibes to go hard like he has. They're going to have to understand this new generation of ball players and go get em. And as has also been said on here before I think, we have to be looking for more than players who grew up on a cul de sac.

Of course that probably means that Dr. Franklin decides to go completely out of left field and hire someone with know ties to the McDermott/Jacobson tree and we just say the heck with it, let's be DII operating at DI. Sam Weaver days here we come....
Number of times on Sports Illustrated cover:
Ben Jacobson coached teams = 2
UNI teams coached by everyone ban thinks is better = 0

I was curious about USU practice facility.

$9.7 million, 32,000 square-foot basketball practice facility and volleyball competition venue contains two regulation-size basketball courts and a regulation-size volleyball competition court with chair back seating for 1,400 fans, https://utahstateaggies.com/faciliti...estes-center/7

I visualize that type of center being very useful at UNI.
