If it "helps," I just simply don't think it's possible for any mid-major to be consistently great anymore. This will just keep happening to any mid major with any juice at all. It is what it is.Originally posted by kochrab View PostUgh. We're just going to become the next SIU, aren't we? Good, not great. Never good enough to do anything significant. Guess it was a good run. I feel deflated.

Remember when Mac left for Iowa State and told all of our recruits (Eglseder, Koch, Ahelegbe...) to stay with UNI? Yeah. I guess we'll find out just how much "Legacy" means now.Number of times on Sports Illustrated cover:
Ben Jacobson coached teams = 2
UNI teams coached by everyone ban thinks is better = 0

1) That was a million years ago when players had next to no rights to move.
2) That group would've gotten eaten alive in the Big 12 at the time. This group is more than capable of playing in a watered down PAC 12.

"100% due to coaching change," Zens told the Journal Sentinel with regard to his motivation.

The hard part of this is that usually coaching changes really go one of two ways.
1. You hire someone who doesn't have existing guys to pull from, have to start from scratch, hope you can get a team that won't finish last the first year
2. You hire someone who does have a team and hope they do well in their new context, like Jacobson is doing and like McCollum did
The first one is more likely here. Fan support was already tanking for a team that went to the NCAA. What's a crowd next season going to look like for a team that probably won't make it off Thursday? We could totally catch lightning in a bottle, but I really doubt it.

Anyone have access to the Courier to see the list of seven names they are suggesting?
Off my head, with UNI connections:
Kyle Green
Erik Crawford
Seth Tuttle
Brooks McKowen
Kwadzo Ahelegbe
Chris Foster
Robbie Sieverding
John Little
Paul Jesperson
Ben Johnson
Brian Jones
Nick Nurse :-)
Not UNI but Iowa ties:
Jeff Horner
Dean Oliver

That Courier article is embarrassing. It's not even worth the bandwidth it's taking up and just full of errors.Originally posted by Khan4Cats View PostAnyone have access to the Courier to see the list of seven names they are suggesting?

Jake is a great coach but he is not a big time promoter. UNI would definitely benefit from a promoter of the program to help boost some fan interest. I don't know if that is Tut or not, and not every school needs it, but I do think it would be a good thing here.Originally posted by kochrab View PostThe hard part of this is that usually coaching changes really go one of two ways.

The bottom line is that whoever the new coach is will have their work cut out for them. It's not an envious spot to be the next guy after one of the greatest coaches in league history.

10-15 years ago it would have been great to have someone like Tuttle jump into the head coach role because the team is all back and you continue what you have. You still have some of that with your lower end guys or dedicated to UNI guys. Today, hiring from within can almost hurt you. The leaving coach will most likely take a good chunk of his good players with him or the good players enter the transfer portal to see what's out there. If you hire a new head coach from somewhere else that was a head coach, they can bring some of their better guys with them to fill holes of the guys that are leaving. Essentially what McCollum did and Jimmy Rogers did. If we are hiring Tuttle I'll be happy but he's probably working his butt off right now to keep things intact and getting new guys here along with new staff.
To those saying, Coach Jake will want some guys to stay at UNI to keep us afloat. Coach Jake wants to win. He is going to take the guys with him that will help him win at Utah State.
Hopefully Zens and any other recruits that reopen their recruiting are doing so just to see what's out there but end up coming back to UNI after we hire a coach. The best chance to do that is to hire from within.

In the spirit of listening for the dog that doesn't bark...
I haven't heard the AD say...we're launching an immediate nationwide search to fill the head coaching position.
Which makes me think they've been busy working through other details as quickly as possible.
We'll see.Winning is more fun than losing.

I was assuming the same. Strange that there has not been a statement about a search, or hiring process. Hoping we get some kind of information today.Originally posted by Blue42 View PostIn the spirit of listening for the dog that doesn't bark...

I suspect it means an "in line" promotion is coming.Originally posted by 06panther10 View Post

I think the next news we hear will be the announcement of the new coach.
But we'll see.

There may be some truth to that...however, this is mainly a product of the culture of the local fanbase, whether students (Years ago, it was a big 'suitcase college' where a TON of students went home for weekends, is it still that way?) or townspeople (a metro over twice the size of Ames with lots if UNI alumni, but lucky to get 3,000+ to show up at a hoops game). So many people in both groups grew up watching Iowa and ISU; and coupled with how those schools dominate the media coverage, pay more attention to those games. The buzz generated pregame at Iowa or by "Hilton magic" doesn't happen with us. Going to games isn't a "must-do".Originally posted by PantherAlum09 View Post

I don't blame Jake at all for a new experience and going where NIL and program money is more available; there's an active and crazed student section and you don't have to beg for a competitive operating budget. Huge props to him for all he did do and the money / improvements he did bring in.
