That may be true. It's odd that the decision has to be communicated at the time of transfer to the student, however. It would be interesting to see how this has played out in past situations.

Either way, this should be Dannen's call and he should be the one to be the bad guy.

There are consequences to decisions in life, deal with it.

UNI doesn't have to allow Doug to go.

I'm not being hard or rooting against Doug in this case, he is after all a 17/18-year old kid. But I am disturbed by Greg trying to take him with him to Creighton and I would be really disturbed if UNI and Dannen and Jake just let it happen with no consequences. And as other people have said, this is college basketball. Doug McDermott is our most highly-rated recruit ever, right? If we lose him (which it appears we will), it's big.

People have the right to either feel this isn't a big deal in the end or (like myself) that it is a big deal and would set us back if we don't at least stand our ground.

Can you name the times when a player hasn't had to sit out when transferring in conference? I recall cases where schools have asked the amount to be reduced to one year, but the authority still lies with the league. See: Axtell, Luke.

I'm not upset with UNI over their decisions, I am upset with the process of it being a conference foe. Stings a lot more than say if it was a Big 12 or CUSA school.

It may very well be the best route for Doug to go play for Greg at Creighton. In fact, I fully respect that decision if that's what the family has settled upon.

However, regardless of friendships, in the midst of the McDermott's doing what's best for the McDermott's, UNI needs to do what's best for UNI.

UNI will survive without Doug, that's not, or at least shouldn't be, a question. The simple fact is that Doug sitting out 2 years is better for UNI than Doug not sitting out 2 years. And if Dannen doesn't stick up for UNI here, it will be a real shame.

I haven't seen anyone comment along these lines as of yet but what happens if Jake wants to release Doug and Troy says "NO WAY". What happens next?

i do have an issue if greg truly convinced doug to come to creighton, but we dont know if that is the case, or if it was dougs decision.

Dannen signs the paper to let Doug out. If Dannen doesn't sign, Doug doesn't go.

My guess is that it wasn't much of a decision. In other words, as soon as Mac knew he was going to CU, both guys knew Doug was coming along.

As you suggested earlier, the only reason Doug probably didn't go to ISU is that he knew it could get really messy if Greg got canned.

Dannen needs to do the right thing for UNI as others have stated, however the right thing is to release him immediately. Think of how awful UNI will look if it appears like we are trying to keep father and son apart. I understand the feeling to want to protect UNI, but we have to think about our image. We are still riding a wave of good press from the NCAA tournament, and we don't want to do anything that would tarnish that in the eyes of the national media or future recruits.

It totally sucks for us, but we have to bite the bullet, take this, and move on. Doug McDermott is a great player, but he is only one player on a team. We still have the right coach for us, some amazing players returning, and recruiting is looking very good for us.

All that said, here's hoping we continue to kick Creighton's butt for many years to come.
