Being left behind would not be comfortable. So what is the next best thing? Play for dad's best friend. Too bad the kid failed an important test of manhood - learning the importance of a handshake and his word. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I don't think UNI has to be their traditional class act and let this go without consequences.
You mean like the importance of handshakes and words that go along with coaching contracts? Which are bought out / changed / etc. countless times each season?

It's not fair, but such is life. We can either look petty, or look forward. We don't have to like it, but we can't hold him hostage without looking like fools.

Enforcing your rights is not "petty."

obviously Mac and Doug know something more than we do if they think he is going to Creighton, or else they were completely oblivious to the fiasco surrounding the iowa recruits over the past two weeks, which i find hard to believe. i cant imagine that sitting out two years simply to play for Dad is in Doug's best interest.

So maybe Nate Buss plays instead of redshirting next season, he might end up better anyway.
Agreed on the above. Yes, I'm extremely disappointed that we are losing such a highly-touted recruit. Yes, I wish Doug had decided to stick with his commitment to UNI. Yes, I wish Greg had gone somewhere else other than Creighton. All that said, I can't blame either one of them for making the decisions that they did. It's so easy for everyone here to get all fired up over this and want to Greg and Doug, but how many of you who are doing so have thought about what you would do if you were in their shoes?

Releasing Doug from his LOI hurts us in several ways, but in this instance it is the right thing to do. I wouldn't say that if it was just a random kid who changed his mind about where he wanted to play. It's about a son who wants to play for his father. That wasn't a very good option for them with the precarious situation with Greg's contract status at ISU, but it is obviously much more reasonable at CU. It is also about Jake and Mac, two guys who have coached together and truly been best friends for a very long time. Jake has known Doug since he was a baby and I'm sure he wouldn't feel right about forcing him to play at UNI when his heart is truly with playing for his father. I'm pretty sure this is the only situation in which Doug would ever have bailed out on Jake, and I'd bet almost anything that both Greg and Doug feel pretty badly about it.

Props to Coach Jake for realizing that some things are bigger than basketball and allowing Doug to pursue his true dream.

I agree that it is not petty, but it looks that way. Perception is everything.

I am not saying that it is bad that he wants to play for his dad at Creighton, but he has to learn that there are consequences in life when you make certain decisions and UNI should not bend over backwards because he changed his mind.

I have no idea what you're talking about with Smith, and therefore can't see how it applies.

It's very possible that Mac didn't know about this 2-year provision.

Seriously, DIAF already. When is the last time you posted something that actually contributed to a thread? The only reason you are on here is apparently to stalk 9YR. Why you haven't been banned for constantly trolling and harassing another poster is beyond me.

Hey all, just trying to get caught up on this. What's the official word? Is DMac being let out of his LOI, and will he officially have to sit for two years? It seems people are extrapolating Big Ten rules to this situation, which is totally not relevant. Does anyone know with certainty how the MVC rules apply to this situation? Thanks, and sorry for the minor rehash of events.

One question REALLY needs to be answered in this whole fiasco:

When GMAC is in his driveway telling reporters and the ISU play by play announcer that Doug is coming with him, how can all UNI official sources say there hasn't been a request for release yet? The timing of that will be very interesting.

Also, hopefully Jake and Troy don't end up in conflict over this and Jake starts looking for other opportunities after all.

So to all of you guys who don't want Dannen to release him...

It seems obvious that Jake told the McDermotts he would be released. Do you want Troy to overrule him and risk straining Jake's relationship with the school? It might require the AD's signature, but this is the head coach's decision and if our AD takes that away from him, I wouldn't be shocked if Jake started looking elsewhere sooner than later.

This sucks, but it's not worth starting a war within our athletic department.

Thanks News. So it's a done deal - he's gone? And, he has to sit out two full years?

Understand that a release does not have anything to do with this 2-year wait period.
