Kent State with Antonio Gates. He's a bit different, he never played college football. Nick Saban wanted him to play football only at Michigan State, so he bailed.

Neither of those guys ever really played basketball here. They were just kind of on the team when football ended if I remember correctly.

Didn't Julius Peppers play at UNC? and Julius Thomas play at Portland State?

I think Ty Talton was on the hoops roster for a season or part of a season one year as well.

He played a year in the NFL with the Lions.

I think trimming down the time between tournament appearances will go a long way to help land some higher level recruits and at the same time help with getting more people into the McLeod. I think we were 1 injury and 1 released scholarship player away to being where we want to be, right now.

I was going to write something very similar, but you beat me to the punch. What could have been with a healthy O'Rear and He Who Shall Not Be Named.

As it is though, both objectively and subjectively I think we would qualify at this point in time as one of the Top 10 "mid-major" programs in the country, and would be one of the Top 60 (or maybe even Top 50) basketball programs in the entire country. I think the program has been elevated enough to the point where it's more attractive to a potential coach (and let's hope it stays at just potential) than a bottom-feeder in a Power 5 conference.

Don't forget two sport star at Cal, Tony Gonzalez. Very good college basketball player and hall-of-fame NFL tight end.

We wouldn't be more attractive than a bottom dwelling P5 position, because even those schools have more money to pay a coach. TV money, and the need to keep up with the other schools in a P5 conference, goes a long ways.

However, the say that it's been a "slow build" in terms of talent is pretty false. Maybe at the end of the bench it's been slower, but the top 4-5 guys are pretty much always trending up.

Look at the roster from 2005-2006. How many of those guys even get offers from UNI at this point?

Eric Coleman - talent wise, probably. Attitude wise? I don't know.
                        Michael Williams - no
                        Everette Pedesclaux - no
                        Brian Haak - no
John Little - doubt it, probably no
                        Adam Viet - no
                        Jared Josten - no
                        Mason Stewart - no
Travis Brown - doubt it, probably not
                        Brooks McKowen - maybe
                        Grant Stout - yes
                        Tyler Griffin - no
                        Austin Howard - no
                        Atila Santos - hell no

There is one...maybe outside shot at 2 or 3...on that entire roster that even gets seriously recruited by this current UNI program.

That's not a knock on any of those players. I had interactions with most of them on campus. They were all, for the most part, great guys. Most of them are still great ambassadors for UNI. It's just the reality of where the program is going.
Agreed, I usually don't with you! Although I would take Mckowen, Howard, and Coleman.

He's a good shooter. He might be slow defensively due to the ACL. I'm not encouraging a transfer. However, he would see extensive PT at the Division II level. I think he would fit in down the road at Upper Iowa University (my other school).

I recall Howard (Raiders) injuring his knee recently. He was probably too slow for BB. He could clear space for rebounds. However, probably whistled for too many fouls.

                              Howard wouldn't see the court.

                              McKowen is an iffy

Coleman, given how Jake runs his program, would never even be recruited and he if was he wouldn't last in the system. The only reason he lasted as long as he did with Jake as HC is because it was only for two seasons, and it was pretty clear by year 2 where Coleman stood with Jake.

Olivier is a recent example of a Coleman type attitude. Doesn't work under Jake.

Howard came into UNI at 6'6 240lbs. He played tight end his first three years on campus for the football team. He then moved to OT for 2 years and was an All American at that and got drafted. By the time he left campus he was 310lbs. He put about 40 of that on during his JR and SR years.

For as much as you say you've followed UNI closely for years, there are some pretty common things you don't know sometimes.
