Foster made a smart choice. Prohm has proven he can bring talent to Ames, meaning he’ll be surrounded by good players. Of the two, Ames was the best choice for him personally as a player, and also his best shot at team level success.Originally posted by Wxcpanther View Post
Even as much as I hate Iowa, damn, what a brutal day today has been. A recruit publicly says he's been an Iowa fan his whole life, but knew ISU was his best opportunity to be successful, then getting blown out by proverbial door mat DePaul, at home. Brutal.

We all know that, but for a recruit who grew up an Iowa fan to actually say that out loud, holy crap.Originally posted by SteinPizza View Post

Know who else dodged a bullet this year? Bowen Born.Originally posted by sevelev711 View Post
Yeah but Foster looks like the biggest genius since that german guy who came up with relativity. Didn't even have to wait 24 hours before the hawks proved him right.
Seriously, though, wxc is right. Normally I would read the misery threads at HawkNation. But after the performance last night there’s too many and the misery is too deep.

Did a quick glance at the scholarship players on Iowa's roster right now (plus Isaiah Moss and Tyler Cook and Maishe Dailey...because Fran did land them)
Here is a list of every P6 offer out of HS that I found for current roster kids - all 5 of them (I'm excluding his kids because honesty it's more shocking when a kid doesn't play for his dad when it's a HC situation)Nebraska - Bakari Evelyn Penn State - CJ Fredrick Nebraska - CJ Fredrick Clemson - Jack Nunge Iowa State - Joe Wieskamp Penn State - Luka Garza Northwestern - Luka Garza Columbia - Luka Garza Princeton - Luka Garza Alabama - Luka Garza Pitt - Luka Garza Louisville - Luka Garza Nebraska - Luka Garza Georgia - Luka Garza Indiana - Luka Garza Georgetown - Luka Garza Notre Dame - Luka Garza South Carolina - Luka Garza Virginia Tech - Luka Garza
Now, he did sign these kids so I should give him "credit"Iowa State - Isaiah Moss Wisconsin - Brandon Hutton - pulled Pitt - Tyler Cook Iowa State - Tyler Cook Virginia Tech - Tyler Cook Purdue - Tyler Cook Kansas - Tyler Cook Illinois State - Tyler Cook Kansas State - Tyler Cook Tennessee - Tyler Cook Miami - Tyler Cook Florida - Tyler Cook Wake Forest - Tyler Cook Marquette - Tyler Cook Mizzou - Tyler Cook Florida State - Tyler Cook Michigan - Tyler Cook UCONN - Tyler Cook Virginia - Tyler Cook Rutgers - Maishe Dailey
That is every scholarship player that has been on the roster the last 4 years. That is 9 total players with P5/6 offers out of HS total over 5 recruiting classes - and only 2 of them had more than 2 offers from that group of schools (Garza and Cook).
1 of those 9 didn't technically have a P5 offer when he signed, as best I can tell Hutton had his offer from WI pulled (he's now at Northwestern State in Louisiana)
Here is a list of every other offer Iowa's current roster - and verbals - had listedDePaul x5 ISUR x4 UIC x4 UNI x4 LUC x3 NIU x3 Toledo x3 Ball State x2 Bradley x2 CU x2 La Salle x2 Lehigh x2 St. Joes x2 Truman State (D2) x2 UIU (D2) x2 UNLV x2 UTEP x2 UWGB x2 Winthrop x2 Albany American Ball State Bryant Buffalo Chicago St CMU Delaware Drexel Duquesne ECU EMU Evansville Fordham GMU GWU HPU Iona ISUB Loyola (MD) Miami (OH) Milwaukee Morehead State Navy New Orleans NKU Oakland Ohio PFW Princeton Rider RMU San Fran Siena SIUC SIUE SJSU SLU SMU St. Bonnie St. Francis (PA) Tampa (D2) Temple Towson Tulane UCF UMASS UNM URI USD Vandy Vermont WMU Wright St Wyoming YSU
It's worth noting that Fran has now gotten verbals/signed as many kids that DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE D1 OFFER - not just P5, I mean D1 period - as he has kids with more than 2 other P5 offers. The 2020 class is hilariously bad. It's like low end MVC to Summit League bad.
It's easy to see why Iowa doesn't look great or may struggle against high end P5/6 teams. They aren't recruiting like a big program. They are recruiting like a mid level MVC/A10 program.
It's not for a lack of trying on Francis's part, to be fair. He is offering dozens of 4-5* kids each year. He's trying...but...
Kids don't want to play for a coach that acts like Fran - and using Coach K, Izzo, Self, etc. as proof that they do is misleading. Those guys are at extremely high levels of coaching, decades of high end success, blue blood type programs. Kids don't want to come to Iowa, to our winters, to play in front of a fan base that is mostly apathetic to basketball, at a school that is a football/wrestling school, in a boring system, for a coach that doesn't have any "real" success, that will spend your entire career screaming at you
Xavier made 100% the right choice for him to get to the next level. Play in a system that will showcase his athletic ability rather than force him to do nothing except play on the block and set a couple screens.

Certainly true with Weiskamp. Put him in the multiple offers list and the larger picture is still pretty ugly down in Iowa City.Originally posted by SteinPizza View PostCLENZ, that’s good stuff. Weiskamp was a big time recruit, and great get for Fran at the time. His strong/early commit to Iowa probably discouraged other offers, but he was highly regarded. But, your point is very legit when looking at the roster as a whole.
We saw the same with Betz being such a strong/early verbal - and no I'm not comparing his ceiling/floor to that of Weiskamp, but in terms of adjusted to level of play it's similar. Maybe Jordan Bohannon could* fit that category as well, but it seems to me he's greatly out performed expectations and likely woudln't have had many other bigger offers than he had. I actually think he as actually closer to only getting an Iowa offer because he looked like a meh prospect with a legacy father that likely would have been a MVC player than he was a kid that "warranted" numerous P5 offers. Going into his senior season he had offers from UNI, Drake, Lehigh and DePaul. Maybe the thinking/talk was he was going to end up a Iowa no matter what so others didn't try. I can't remember. IIRC he didn't bring in excessive celebration when he committed. He's a near elite level shooter (if not there), but I'm not sure he's a "true" P5 if he's an average shooter.
I've had this conversation with a few people - more than a few kids at Iowa (and Wisconsin) had UNI offers and have been meh B10 rotational guys. Had they been at UNI they'd almost certainly have made AC teams and been stars here. However, the B10 patch was too much to pass on. We've seen it happen in football when it comes to recruiting as well - Iowa/Iowa State/Wisconsin having (present or past) the inability to attract elite level players like other P5s leads them to landing kids that *should* be at UNI/ISUR/SIU/etc.
Again, it's not a lack of trying on Fran's part. Look at the kids he offers early. It's all 4* high target kids. He just can't land them. Jake has had a similar issue in that he really is the lead recruiter for P6 programs in the upper midwest. He goes after kids that are borderling P5/6 kids and doesn't hit as often as he'd like. Difference is it can be easier to recover/cover that at the MVC level than the B10

Yea, I've never really understood the kids who are going to be nothing more than an average player for a power conference team preferring that over playing from year 1 and being much more successful at a mid major. I guess maybe they think they'll be better in the higher conference or something. I don't think it has a much of an impact on getting to the next level either.Originally posted by clenz View PostI've had this conversation with a few people - more than a few kids at Iowa (and Wisconsin) had UNI offers and have been meh B10 rotational guys. More money in the program
larger fan bases
larger arenas
playing in front of more people
playing more games on national tv
more/better swag
I get it. It sucks, but it's the truth.

Almost all of those guys have enough ego to think they can play high level ball. It comes with the territory.Originally posted by CyCarp View Post

Good information here. All Foster had to do was take a step back and look at who else was coming in with him and the decision was pretty easy. Play 4 years with low level talent and Fran's kids or stay closer to home and likely have a better supporting cast. In terms of younger guys, Wieskamp and Frederick look like they can play in the B1G, but after that there isn't much there. Connor looks two steps slow at all times and hasn't shown any ability to make his teammates better offensively. Patrick looks completely overwhelmed physically. I understand he's only a freshman, but sometimes kids just don't bulk up. We've seen that here with McDonnell not really able to get bigger. I think both of his kids were rated out of high school based on their last name and not on their ability. Nunge still seem lost in his 3rd year.Originally posted by clenz View PostDid a quick glance at the scholarship players on Iowa's roster right now (plus Isaiah Moss and Tyler Cook and Maishe Dailey...because Fran did land them)

There is talk Bohannon may shut it down and take a redshirt based on his hip injury. If you are Bohannon, would you sit and watch what is likely to be a year of bad basketball and losses to come back next year when there is no more help coming or would you grind it out this year and move on with life?
I don't want to say the cupboard is bare in Iowa City, but it's like Fran went to the store for Gatorade and the only thing left was AllSport.

Jess Settles, color commentator for the Iowa-Southern Illinois Edwardsville televised game last week, took a slight swipe at UNI by saying Ryan Kreiner could have been a "double-double" guy in the MVC, rather than a career backup player like he is at Iowa, because he wanted to play in the big time, as UNI was his next best offer.

I mean, he absolutely would have been.
