I'm hoping both come back, but who knows. I was very frustrated with Tywhon last week, but when he plays his game, he's still pretty good. Plus I hate to see seniors go out in a crappy season like this. I think it does help that both are true seniors, it's not like next year would be a 6th or 7th year.Originally posted by SteinPizza View Post
Say hypothetically Green elects to sit out this year to get healthy...I wonder if that prompts guys like Berhow and Pickford to come back next year to be part of what could be something special? Note - I’m pretty sure Pickford is a senior, but could be wrong. To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

Again, no inside info but just going off what I’ve seen other coaches say. These kids know that they need to get on with their life, and from a team perspective, also creates a scholarship problem team wise. Also remember that in order to play that the kids need to take classes in order to be eligible.Originally posted by orangetennis View Post
What would make you say that?

I believe the scholarship limits are being waved for next year only to allow for kids to stay an extra year.
But the school still would have to make the decision to offer extra scholarships. And money is tight for all athletic departments right now.Winning is more fun than losing.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. For the vast majority of these kids, their college basketball experience will be the highlight of their entire life. Why would they want to "get on with their lives" when they can remain in the limelight, and take another crack at a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament?Originally posted by Mill1634 View Post

The argument about the school affording to offer the extra scholarships is a legit one, but from the kid's perspective, I just can't imagine anyone wanting to "get on with their life" instead of playing a bonus season of D1college basketball.

If I were advising a kid who had the chance to play one more year, and they were getting meaningful playing time, I would recommend they stay and play.Originally posted by orangetennis View Post

Unless they have a terrific opportunity waiting for them after college, I would take the experience of one more season. Agree it is a unique opportunity you will likely not have again in life.
But the kids heart has to be in it. And for some kids I think 4 or 5 years of D1 sports is a hell of a grind and they get worn down.
Very individual decision...but my advice would be to think hard about playing one more year.Winning is more fun than losing.

Go look at others comments. For example? Kirk Ferentz has said multiple times he does not anticipate many using the extra year. I understand that it is a different sport and a different school, but I think this will be the case everywhere. The athletes coming back not only means another year + summer of practicing, studying, and staying in shape. I know it seems easy to say it’s a year of basketball (or any other sport) but it’s a grind on these kids. And on the other side you have the team/school. It can impact them both financially and playing time wise. For example, ty coming back would affect Heise/Anderson/Duax playing time for next year.Originally posted by orangetennis View Post

I agree with this. Some guys might have a job lined up after graduation. Some might be planning on grad school. Every situation is different. With Pickford and Berhow, it's only a 5th year for both - last year I believe we graduated three 5th year seniors, so it's not like it's uncommon, other than they may not have expected a 5th year 2 months ago. I believe Jake was asked about it in the preseason and (if I remember correctly) he said those conversations haven't been had yet, but if the guys want to come back for 1 more year, they'll make it work.Originally posted by Blue42 View Post

In other news, it's good to hear the Richmond game is a go. Hopefully we hear some news on AJ soon.To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.

Keep in mind also that if an athlete has followed the advice of his advisor, he will have completed a degree program in 4-5 years and would have to enter a graduate program in order to continue playing a sport. If UNI does not offer graduate studies for that degree program the athlete would have to transfer elsewhere."They keep saying that what really matters is not whether you win or lose, but how you played the game. The trouble is that the best way to determine how you played the game is by whether you won or lost." - Anonymous

AJ Green update: He has not participated in practice and there is no expected date for return at this point. He's doing individual stationary workouts & rehab and is still in the huddles talking to teammates at practice. The next step is unlikely to be decided before next week.Originally posted by UNIChippewa View PostAny latest news on AJ?To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.
