Second, my guess is that we dropped a lot on OE, and didn't change much on DE (on average). We were very high on OE, so it's easy to drop. We were average one DE, so we're still average.

The good news is that we are clearly emphasizing defense. Yesterday, defense and rotations seemed much more a focus than running the offense. If we can get good on defense, then this team will have a very high ceiling. If we can do UNI defense, AND score at a high clip, it's gonna be tough to beat us.
So they are using a formula they don't know how it works.

Someone built it. There are people that know how it works.

They're using an AI for the rankings, so at this point, no, they likely don't know how it works. It's not just a formula; it's a predictive model (https://thecomeback.com/ncaa/ncaa-ne...ournament.html). This is the challenge with self-learning, complex algorithms: we know how they get started, but after they learn on their own we don't really know how they continue to make decisions. This whole thing is giving me an ominous SkyNet kind of feeling....

The only top 16 Net teams not to make the Sweet 16 were Wofford and Buffalo. Both of those teams were knocked by fellow top 16 Net ranked teams. Seemed to work pretty good last year.

            • The problem UNI is having with the NET is a mixture of things.

The offense had 19 turnovers. That is horrible for the offensive efficiency. Not only are turnovers like that bad for the offense, many times they end up as easy baskets for the opposition. That's bad for defensive efficiency. If you look at KenPom, UNI is already a top 15 team as far as offense goes, there's not much room for improvement. Yes, they can raise the efficiency number itself, but the Panthers' problem with ball control will ultimately make that more difficult. The defense can improve, needs to improve. Strength of Schedule is not going to get any new bumps. Everyone they play now is mostly Q2 or Q3. The win over Loyola added a +1 to their Margin of Victory, overtime games count as a +1/-1 for the winner and loser). That actually made the MoV average come down. If you consider all the points, it's not hard to see why they stayed where they were or dropped slightly.

              • Loyola was our 20th game, I have a hard time believing at this point of the season, that 1 game changes efficiency enough to drop a couple spots. Maybe I'm wrong, it just seems a bit drastic. It's just mind boggling that we dropped 2 and Loyola went up 7 - how could their efficiency numbers improve that much to push them up, but ours (which I'm assuming were better since we beat them) were bad enough to drop us?

With Loyola the biggest thing was an improvement on SOS and it being a close game.

                    • Hopped up 3 spots on Barttorvik, to 39, thanks both to the thumping as well as SCar beating Arkansas. Not only did it probably boost us up, but we passed Arkansas to do so.

Insanely efficient offense plus a big South Carolina win makes for a good day....

                            • And for what it's worth (probably not a lot), Old Dominion and GCU are nearly in Q3 territory.

South Carolina is NET#75 and needs to make it to 50 to be Q1. Not out of the question yet

                              • Drake and Missouri St are both within a few spots of those road games moving to Q2 also. Tough to ask for too much with conference teams since they'll be beating up in each other though.
