Also Illinois State lost to the Bears, so we're tied for first again. Behind us by a game is Belmont, who's won 8 in a row.
Missouri State is also just a game behind UNI

Oops, right you are. And although Drake has fallen to 5th, I maintain that when they're on, they're as tough as anyone. I imagine coach Starr and her staff are troubled by the inconsistency.

Looks like the league tournament is going to be suspenseful! And our chances are as good as anyone's.

Better news is that with the win we clinched a top 5 seed. With 6 to go. We have the head to head over UIC and beat SIU on the road.
        magic number is 3!!

Great Panther women's victory yesterday at Valpo! Maya had an awesome game. I sure got tired of the announcer calling us "Northern" all the time. Every time he said it, I talked back to him and said "Iowa." LOL.

We desperately DESPERATELY need to put our branding standards in our game notes like everybody else does. Per the brand guidelines, you can make one reference to 'The University of Northern Iowa' but after that UNI is the only acceptable reference. Just flat calling us 'Northern' or 'Northern Iowa' is not an acceptable reference.

Drives me up the freaking wall too. Though we did it to ourselves by putting 'Northern Iowa' on the baseline of our floor rather than 'UNI Panthers'.

I know this is a never ending debate, but I will forever die on the hill that we should be referred to as Northern Iowa. Outside of our state, UNI just makes people think too hard, and they probably don't care enough to think that hard.

Maybe with the completion of the university wide revamp of branding (purposefully excluding athletics), a second phase will be initiated at the athletics level though I'm sure it would have to be led by the university as a whole and not left to the athletic department to get things done.

BTW - Congrats to Coach Warren on her 300th victory. What an awesome accomplishment. She has taken what coach DiCecco built and has continued to grow from there. Very impressive given the limited budget of the program.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

A few years ago I was right there with you. With the university rebranding, I'm all in on owning UNI. We need to make it ours by fully embracing it and it has to be done at the athletics level to help make it stick.

Correct. It really worked for UCF and USF among others. Make it ours and make it unique while getting rid of the directional connotation.

I can't think of too many others with similar 3 word directional/location-based names that actually use the full name. Almost of them brand around the abbreviation

List of 3 word schools - excluding things like "X State University" that have chosen to brand their university as an abbreviation rather than the directional/regional/Named after someone's full name of the university

There's a reason every school shortens their names as much as possible to still maintain their identity and then uses that in every aspect of their university.

Embrace UNI. Be UNI. This back-and-forth thing we do is insane. We don't enforce any branding standards on print or PxP. We should never allow anyone to refer to us as "Northern". That is someone in the AD/marketing needing to grow a backbone and enforce standards.

Came up a little short in the battle for the conference lead vs Illinois State last night dropping to them 70 to 72. Starting out slow hurt. So did the Redbirds shooting 70% at one point for 3 pointers.

Yeah that's tough to beat. I think you have to give credit to Robinson, her shot is sweet and her size is a tough match up for us to defend, particularly when Goebel gets in early foul trouble. We might be lucky that Crompton only took 3 shots, when she gets her rainbows going it's something else.

It was fun to see both Finley and Green get hot in the 2nd half, we aren't going to lose very many when that happens. I'd have liked to see a few more minutes from McDermott; Wharton has played very well for a freshman, but McDermott is the better scorer at this point.

Not looking forward to that return trip to Belmont.

Season finale against Missouri State could wind up being a huge game, HUGE game.
