  • Re: Barta sez decision on in-state basketball games could come soon

The people who think they have some insight, based upon their own financial situation of whatever, to proclaim not only what someone else should do, but what they MUST do, are being particulalrly unwise and borderline idiotic.

I understand it's the "war on the world" mentality of this board carried out to its natural ends, but that doesn't make it okay.

Paying private tuition (which it is perfect logical to decide is far more important than supporting UNI) and other bills could easily leave someone in a position where there just isn't anything left. Millions of Americans are living (barely) paycheck to paycheck yet some of us think we can master and determine someone else's finances. You just don't know enough about their situation to make that judgment.

I could say that taking advice (or following a demand) from someone who is going into debt to pay for a wedding (which is entirely unwise and a good example of the type of financial irresponsibility which is an epidemic in this country) is foolish. I don't have the information necessary to make that evaluation, however.

Reread my post. I'm calling out PantherHok for not being an UNI fan, not you.

So because I don't donate money that I don't have, I am not a panther fan????? Seriously, you are going to say that. I don't donate to any university because I do not have the money right now. Why can't people get that through your heads! Teachers do not make a lot of $$ and especially when you are having to pay your own way to buy school supplies for your students. When you have two car payments, house loan, student loans, and all other expenses that come along. Its not a good time right now, I yesterday had to go buy some supplies for my classroom, because there was no money left in our budget. Sorry we are living paycheck to paycheck, maybe you could throw some of your "extra" money cyclonepanther our way, since you obviously are rich and can afford it.

okay then, so I should donate the 100$ I use to buy groceries then, okay I guess it looks like we will be eating oatmeal and going to the local soup kitchen.

Wow some of you need to get a grip, start pushing the people who have their own jets and are CEO's of companies instead of the people who are barely getting by. I saw a UNI grad a couple of years ago that I used to know through working in the Cedar Valley, he is a HUGE hawkeye donor, go push him for some money, go knows that club/box seats at kinnick aren't cheap.

There is thread after freaking thread after freaking thread about wanting to be seen on the same level as ISU and UI. There is thread after thread turning into discussions of how the BOR is cutting tens of thousands of dollars a year out of our athletic department (and university in general). You don't think that every freaking penny is going to help somehow?

Donations don't need to be 10-****ing-thousand dollars. There is a reason why that level of the PSC is the second highest...donations like that are slim around UNI.

I'm 24, have 2 car payments, a mortage, student loans for myself and my wife (neither of us got much fin aid in school...all loans), donate to the alumni association, friends of gallagher, PSC, United Way, and a couple other charities. It's not like we are rolling in the money either...we aren't. However, donations don't have to be big. When you throw money in the offering plate at church every week are you throwing a couple hundred/thousand bucks a week? Or do you do what most people do and throw a 5 or a 10 in there?

Same thing. Churches and charities can't exist without donations....at this point - neither can UNI.

Yep, I realize how much private school is....I also realize that private schools don't have *that much* outcomes for their students than public schools....Just because they charge 5 times as much as a public school (I actually have no idea what public schools in DM charge) doesn't mean the education is any better
Public school is basically Free, so yeah and trust me where I work, the local private school is scoring in the 90+ percentile in standardized testing, our public school scored in the 50th percentile. So they must be doing something right, just saying.

Private schools don't score better on their test due to better teachers, they score better on standardized tests because almost all the students who attend these schools are from families who have the resources to send their children to these schools. I am not saying that they are all rich, but they are not starving either. You don't see over half of the students at these schools on free/reduced lunches and most are able to be typical teenagers, not having to worrying about supporting the family.

I push everyone I know to join the PSC.

I don't have extra money laying around. You talk about a car, mortage, loans, etc... I'd bet every member of the PSC has car payments, house payments, loan payments, credit card bills, etc...

If you aren't willing to find 25 a year to donate, you never will. That's how humans are. That's your choice, that's fine. However, at that point it's pretty tough to be upset at the university or BOR to decide to cut money. The funding can't be there if there isn't private fundraising to match it.

It has been said, if you are waiting to be able to donate 10,000 at a time you are never going to donate. However, it makes you feel better saying that "at some point I will donate".

If you don't want to, think you can't, donate then don't. However, 10,000 people donating 25 dollars is better than 250 people donating 1,000 each. Same total, but a bigger base is being developed and it's clear the alumni/fan base cares.

I considered dropping my donations to UNI for the coming year, because I also have many different payments I have to make. However, it's pretty clear UNI is in a pretty tough place. I can recover from having a little less money each month to do "fun" things. UNI really can't recover from being censured, cutting a ton of programs, cutting athletics, etc.... nearly as easy.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone would donate to your school to be able to afford the supplies for you, so you didn't have to spend your own money on it?

If UNI isn't a priority to you, then so be it. I can't make you donate....I can tell you that 25 goes a lot further than you think it does.

I hear Cyclone fans say the same stuff too. But the fact is 99.9% of Americans blow a lot more than 25 bucks in the course of a year on dumb crap they don’t need or even really want. I love my family too, and most of the money I earn goes to improving our lot in life. I have few hobbies that cost money and I am in general a huge tight ass. That said, it’s not like the donation I make to my church, the ARL, and the Cyclone Club takes food out of my children’s mouths. It’s not like every single dollar of money I earn beyond meeting my needs to survive goes directly into charity to help hungry Iowans. And guess what, I’d bet my entire life savings nobody else does these things. The whole “my family comes first” crap is exactly that. It’s a huge cop-out. If you don’t like hearing it go ahead and close your browser.

The whole private school stuff isn’t a big deal. If you can afford to send your kid to day care you can easily send your kid to private school.

If you’ve read Freakonomics, I think they discovered something very interesting about public and private/charter schools. There are families in Chicago that do everything they can to get into the charter schools and when they don’t get picked in the lottery system they use they are devastated. However, their research showed that even if those kids didn’t get into the charter schools, the outcomes remained the same based on the kids that applied, whether or not they “won the lottery” or not. Basically, if your family cared enough to try and further your education, you’ll probably get a pretty good education regardless of where you go.

The under 30 program was a huge reason i started. i had always wanted to do it but didn't have the money initially and didn't know how to at first. Then I saw I could get some perks if I met a certain donation level that was achievable due to the Under 30 program. Last year, I couldn't give because I had other obligations arise but I'm giving again this year. I'd love to give as much as a car dealership owner but maybe someday.

this was back when it was hard to get good seats...I miss those days.

$25 ($2 a month) goes a lot farther than you think at UNI. It may be a little less significant at a school like Iowa, but it is still real dollars that can be spent by the school or department of your choice. Plus, don't look at it like it is "only $25". It is the combination of your $25 with everyone else that has the ability and desire to give $25 that will have a tremendous impact. I would love to increase the PSC by 1,000 new members all giving $25. Now that would be a incredible. But, at the end of the day, each person has to look inside their own souls and decide what is worthy of their hard earned dollars. I hope that UNI and the PSC has a place for each of you.

I see Iowa already added Coppin State to their schedule next year. Thankfully for them, they had some extra "flexibility" to add such a great game.

Who was it last year? Loras came because no one else will.

Western Carolina and Northern Colorado were South Padre games we were contractually obligated to take.
