  • Honest question at this point might Hutson actually be better then Phyfe? I think we like to think of AP as the All Conference player he was a few years ago, but realistically I don't think we will have that player if he is able to return.

I know I am also thinking of Hutson as the kid we saw a few years ago as well.

Who knows what you're going to get with Phyfe, but his health situation was a damn shame. For him personally, but also for the team.

His Sophomore year he was 6th [nationally] in effective FG percentage, 21st in offensive rating, 22nd in offensive rebounding, 233rd in defensive rebounding, 243rd I'm shot blocking. An absolute animal and I don't think Hutson has touched that level.

Where you really miss Phyfe is when UNI is on one of those classic scoring droughts. Being able to throw it in to him and get a bucket almost on command is such a luxury.
Yeah, a D+ effort out of me on the day I created the name for this account. I didn't think I would use this account more than once.

His 2019-2020 season was one of the best seasons a UNI player has ever had and on one of the best teams UNI has ever had. A spectacular year, and sadly it has been literally the only normal full healthy season he has ever had.

If I understand it correctly, Austin's issue that kept him out last season was the blood clot, and fear of contact. So, wouldn't he have been able to work on his game individually the entire time? If so, I'd honestly expect a better shooter and ball handler with a more skilled inside game with all that time he's had to focus on his offense.

The 19-20 team had Phyfe having stupid crazy efficiency numbers, Berhow shot 45% from 3 and nearly identical TS to Phyfe, IB was a defensive stud and he an Haldeman were shooting 39% from 3 as well with just enough juice off the bench in Pickford/Carter/Kimmons/Dahl. Def one of my favorite teams

All that, the Larry bird winner, a 25-6 record, and they still probably wouldn’t have made the tournament unfortunately

That team went 2-1 in Indiana. That's how you know it was an all timer.

He's been able to work individually on his game to stay in shape and keep the ball in his hands. He just couldn't do anything that may draw contact.

                      Only a guess:

                      Born
                      Campbell
                      Heise
                      Duax
                      Anderson

                      Hutson
                      Taylor
                      Wolf
                      Pock
                      Rubin

                      Betz
                      Henry
                      Courbat
                      Daniel
                      Krogman
                      Miller
                      Jacobson

A lot better if Austin can play. Hope Peksari returns too.

I don't know much about what Peksari is thinking concerning staying or leaving but I do know that he is far from home and basically a 4th string point guard. ( 1.Born, 2.Campbell, 3.RJ 4.Peksari) He probably won't get much playing time this year unless he significantly improves. Your lineups look good but I would switch Hutson and Campbell so that we have a true big in the starting lineup.

                        He isn't going anywhere.

He is getting a free American education, which is invaluable worldwide, and gets to play basketball as part of it at a place that has clearly made him feel more than at home or he wouldn't be here to begin with.

There are also really no transfer options for him. With the way that kind of visa works, he can't just go "I'm done here, I'm going to go to School X now".

His options are staying in CF or go back to Turkey. Outside of a massive family issue to take him home he is going exactly nowhere.

It's why I used the Spongebob sarcasm meme font when talking about transfers on this forum.

People here are so ****ing fast to point out "He had a good year he's going to leave" or "He has to be leaving because he isn't playing 30 minutes per night".

It's just so ****ing dumb all the way around. Especially because it starts with one random poster that doesn't actually know jack **** and everyone else just runs with it in other threads and all of a sudden it is some actual truth that is apparently now credible.

                        • I think that this is Ege's best option at Northern Iowa. He probably isn't going anywhere.

                          • Clenz I agree 100% with your post. Unfortunately that is the world that we live in. I do however think that Jake and the staff have made a concerned effort to bring in guys who will buy in to the program and stick around whether it is that they have risen to a level where they could be a P5 player or aren't seeing the court much. I do also know that if a player chooses to leave most of the time it is on good terms and Jake is willing to do what is necessary to find them a home.

That's the biggest difference between Jake and any other coach that loses half their roster every year and gets stuck in the portal game.

Jake recruits HS kids to fit his system. He isn't looking for someone that is going to "flash" on film that is the super athletic, super flashy, overly athletic kids and trying to fit them to his system. He's looking for kids that fit his system that have enough of everything listed to be a D1 kid. The kids that MOSU, MUSU, ISUr, etc. go after are flashy guys. They are kids with super-high ceilings and athletic ceilings. These kids then have to try to fit into a system for a MM and they hate it, so they so flashes to other programs and get poached.

Jake's guys aren't going to flash. They aren't going to "look like they belong at a higher level". They are kids that were underrecruited in high school because of it. They are kids that were maybe a step too slow for larger programs. They are 2 inches too short. They have a vertical that is 3 inches too low. However, when in the system they are in they are elite. These kids often will never look attractive to larger programs as a transfer. Noah is the outlier in that situation. It's why he's the only actual transfer we've had out.

There are forums that go "We want Bowen and Heise". Maybe some staff will sniff around, but he reality is when push comes to shove those staffs know (re: believe even if not true) that 5'10 110lb Bowen Born would be physically dominated going against B12/BE/B10 guards every night. Heise doesn't have enough beef or explosiveness to play the 3 every night in those leagues. These are kids that fit a very specific system that Jake runs. Guys like Ty, O'Rear, all of the Koch brothers, J-Mo, J-Bo, Johnny Moran, Sonan, etc. are all prime examples of this.

Jake also recruits such a specific kid out of HS so that when they go to a larger program because they check enough boxes, even if not all of them, he has the connections when they are back in the portal. See Jesperson, Wes, Trae, etc. There's a reason most of the recruits we lose to larger programs end up at Iowa State, Wisconsin, UVa, etc. They are almost always in on the same kind of kids as Jake is.

Hell, look at RJ Taylor as an example of what Jake, and the staff, look for in recruiting. RJ is going to come here because the staff has clearly shown him the maximum amount of love/loyalty possible. If he was 3 inches taller he is probably at Michigan, Michigan State, UVA, or Wisconsin. He's listed at 6', and some days I wonder if he is 6' the same way Bowen is 6'. So he doesn't check the height, or speed, or vertical boxes that high majors want. Jake sees a kid that fits a system to insanely perfectly and spent the recruiting budget on him. If RJ blows up at UNI is someone like ISU, Wisconson, or Michigan State going to come back to him and try to land him? Maybe. We know they were looking at him while he was in HS, but again he didn't check their boxes. Jake has long gone "I don't give a **** about the boxes, do you fit what I want to do? Yes. I'm going to make you feel like you are my own child". That doesn't stop when they get to campus like it does with most coaches. I know Nike printed the "Family" shirts for post-season play for every school a few years ago, but there's a reason UNI has continued with that motto and uses it everywhere. It's true here. Kids don't want to leave somewhere they truly are family as easily.

It's part of why I hate seeing posts saying things like "Betz needs to go or give up a scholarship". Would it be "nice" to be able to have that scholarship for someone that might be a better all around basketball player? Sure. However, James has wanted to be a Panther his entire life. He bleeds purple. You don't tell that kid to shove off simply because you want a transfer to come in. Well, you can and that's how ISUr, Valpo, MUSO, MOSU, Evansville, etc. end up replacing 7 guys every year. Believe it or not, recruits see that and will consider that. Jake isn't about playing that game and causing that spiral to start on the roster.
