Ya I get 1650 with next to no issues in Grinnell over an hour away. Strange to me as a lay person that AM would travel so much better than FM

FM broadcasts are "line of sight." If there is a large hill between you and the station the FM signal will be blocked by terrain. AM signals, on the other hand, go much higher into the atmosphere before being received. That is why, when I was a young boy, at night I could receive AM stations in french from Quebec and in Spanish from Acapulco. As well as stations in Cincinatti, New Orleans and Little Rock.Originally posted by Wxcpanther View PostYa I get 1650 with next to no issues in Grinnell over an hour away. Actually when we were in Colorado Springs we somehow got 1540 when UNI hosted New Hampshire (Montari Leonard game). That was incredible to me.Originally posted by Big Cats View Post

Correct. FM is line of sight, and has better capacity to penetrate. AM signals, by design, bounce.Originally posted by Big Cats View Post

Think of it this way: An FM signal shoots straight out of the top of the tower in all directions. An AM signal shoots straight up and bounces back down. That permits it to bounce off clouds, the ionosphere, etc, and go crazy distances, especially at night. A 50,000 watt AM station (the legal limit) will go much further than a 100,000 watt (the legal limit) FM station. KXEL is also what they call a "clear channel" station - any other station broadcasting on that frequency has intentionally low power, and has to direct their signal to get out of the way of the "clear channel" station, especially at night.
To this day, WHO-AM rebroadcasts Iowa games overnight on GameDay Saturdays. They do it because they realized, during Vietnam, that Iowa servicemen overseas could pick it up in SE Asia. I worked at a station in Dubuque where we received a tap from Norway. We were a smaller station, but we pointed north overnight, and a guy with a big antenna picked us up and wanted verification so he could check us off his list.
The upside to moving to Mix 93.5 is you will be able to get it indoors, in any building, in the broadcast area. It will be a more accessible, cleaner, signal. The down side? Even with their power upgrade, a much smaller broadcast area.

So there used to be a network around the state... In recent years, here in the Iowa City area we used to be able to pick up the games on the KGYM (south gym) FM station. Are they still doing that? I couldn't tell if this announcement was only the replacement for the flagship, or if all of the old stations are getting dumped.__________________

I think the network stays in place.
Back in the bad old days, the "flagship" station ran the network. That's what 92.3 KOEL did when they had it. Since the move to Learfield, the concept of a "flagship" station is purely ceremonial; everything is run out of Jefferson City.
This is a big deal because it's the local "flagship" station, but I'd think the other stations (KGYM, 1700 in Des Moines, etc) will stay the same.

1700 AM in DSM is available via the I Heart app. I’ve been able to listen to the majority of football/basketball games and coaches’ shows via this app. I say majority because every once in a while it seemed like someone at 1700 forgot to “flip the switch” and cut to Learfield for UNI programming.Originally posted by 1994grad View PostDo we know, will the games be available for streaming through the radio stations website?
