"...the Northern Iowa men's basketball team reached the ultimate highs before hitting a devastating low. Unexpected success, followed by unimaginable failure. And they owned it -- all of it -- for the world to see. Like men. Like leaders. Like champions -- in a way no tournament bracket could ever define."

Re: Offer Mr. Green! Class of 2018
Not too early on George Mason. They will have a terrible season and are not a good team. That was absolutely an inexcusable home loss to an inferior opponent.Originally posted by SteinPizza View PostIt's also way too early to assume the George Mason loss is inexcusable. We're a young team, with some weaknesses...just because we're at home doesn't mean we should automatically beat a good team. GM could turn out to be better than you think. From memory, the same thing happened last year (?) against Hawaii (?). I remember everyone thinking the sky is falling after that loss early in the year, and Hawaii actually turned out to be a pretty good team.
The rebounding issue has got to be fixed. That's got to be Jake's issue #1, right? But, saying we should never lose to GM is not realism.

I can understand both points of view.
It is a young team and there will be rough patches, so I don't want to be too hard, but at the same time, shooting 25% for the game and getting outrebounded 52-30 at home to a team picked to finish 12th in their conference is hard to look past. Especially as a lot of our shots were open looks. I do have faith that they will get the offense going as the season goes on.

Unfortunately, I'd say losing to Loyola at home last year is a better comparison than losing @ Hawaii.
Also, youth is a standard excuse for almost every team early in the year, but it's important to remember that George Mason is also very young and they just went on the road and beat us.
It's a bad loss, but you move on and try to win the next one.

Re: Offer Mr. Green! Class of 2018
It seems every year UNI has a couple good wins early, but otherwise plays like crap for the first 2 months of the season. I was hoping this year we were going to break the cycle, but looks like same old same old. 5 games in we are getting the same excuses about the players being tired from too many minutes played. What a crock that 18-21 year olds supposedly in fantastic shape cannot put forth 30 minutes of physical effort over a 2 hour period twice a week. The number one thing they have to work on is shooting baskets. They always look like they've never shot a basketball in their life. All they work on is defense obviously, but when you never score it puts a lot more pressure on your defense. The number two thing is rebounding. It's a given we'll never get an offensive rebound other than a fluke, but we need to at least get more defensive rebounds than our opponents get offensive.
It's already clear our season will come down to 3 games in early March. Wake me in mid Feb when they start playing to their potential.
It's the exact same scenario as the fb team, yet Jacobson is worshiped while Farley is despised, because they have been winning those 3 games. That isn't going to happen every year.GO PANTHERS!

You might take a look back at 2 years ago (I know ancient history) at how we played pre-MVC before you start comparing Jake and Farley. I'll give you a hint that it set us up for a top 10 ranking in the highest division of NCAA basketball when mid-February came around.Originally posted by GonzoCat View PostIt seems every year UNI has a couple good wins early, but otherwise plays like crap for the first 2 months of the season. Re: Offer Mr. Green! Class of 2018
Your opinions have some merit, but also keep in mind this year was destined to be a crap shoot in terms of scoring. UNI came in without having anyone with a history of creating on offense, a history of making plays on offense that would open things up for others, etc. Carlson is the closest to that, and he only started to show that late last year. Morgan has always been a defensive standout with the ability to hit 3s...that's obviously valuable but way different from being a creator on offense.Originally posted by GonzoCat View PostIt seems every year UNI has a couple good wins early, but otherwise plays like crap for the first 2 months of the season. Give this team some time for a few players to find their offensive niche.' Jake's teams have a history of this. Tuttle, Jake Koch, Waspun, etc., and others didn't really become their finished products until after their JR year's got started. I remember Tuttle especially looking different at the end of that year. Part of it is players skills developing, and part seems to be the coaches using them differently. I won't be surprised if McCloud, Koch, Morgan, or Haldeman start finding some ways to either generate offense, or serve as the guy who benefits from someone else starting to put pressure on the D.

'Every year'? 2014/15 we were 11-1 thought December. Re: Offer Mr. Green! Class of 2018
Not sure if I missed this before, or if it's been out for a while and I forgot, but Rivals and 24/7 Sports showing that AJ has an offer from Iowa State now. I knew there was interest, bit don't recall hearing about an offer.
EDIT: Check that - 24/7 Sports shows a timeline, AJ was offered by Iowa St yesterday.Last edited by CyCarp; 12-23-2016, 01:15 PM.To avoid confusion - my username is baseball (Cy Young award) related, NOT for the Cyclones.
