I think the honest answer. Is no one here has any clue lol

Right but based on historical perspectives from Jake, I would expect the kid with two years of college ball under his belt to start over the incoming freshman unless this kid is the next AJ Green.
If computers ruled college basketball the way they do football, we'd have skipped all this March Madness monotony and just waited a month for the Kansas-Kentucky title game. And watched Northern Iowa play Cornell in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. ~ Dwight Perry The Seattle Times

      • They both have 2 years of college experience, one was a star on a D2 team. One was a good player on a bad D1 team then road the bench player on an improved D1 team.

        • Noone here can be sure who is "better"

However, from my novice perspective I'd bet the edge goes to Weisbrod initially and he has to prove he gets to keep it. Same length in college ball. One D1 one D2. The D1 player was a limited roll type player. The other was an absolute stud who was clearly the focus of his team and still put numbers up - 1st team all-conference, Conference POY, etc.. When he hit the portal it was big news and there was going to be a "bidding war" for lack of a better term for his services. Here is the list of "known" teams that contacted/offered him within like 48hours of hitting the portal per a twitter account that uses a system to skim the portal and sends updates: Toledo, UNI, Bradley, Belmont, St Thomas, Milwaukee, Indiana State, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, Wofford, Eastern Washington

Yes, we were clearly in the top 4 programs to contact him but Toledo, Bradley, Belmont, and Indiana State all within 48 hours, plus South Dakota State and North Dakota State - the two programs that clearly run the Summit and in the case of SDSU is actually a pretty damn good program that has produced a number of high end P5 transfers the last few years. Even NDSU knows how to find talent. Grant Nelson left them for Alabama last year and put the SEC through the ringer and he is going to come back next year and do it to them again.

Meanwhile, Schweiger played in 10 games last year, hit the portal, and I can't find any programs connected to him. That doesn't mean none were. That doesn't mean he didn't take visits. That doesn't mean he didn't have offers. However, his market wasn't as strong as Weisbrod.

None of that matters come summer workouts, first practice, and opening tip. Though it would seem to indicate that Weisbrod, theoretically, has the edge starting out in terms of starts, minutes, etc.

Others can disagree and correct me but it feels as though Max is "replacing" Heise and Schweiger more in the Wolf/Duax roll for bench minutes and rotation.

          • Seems to me like it'll be Taylor, Campbell, Bond, Anderson, Hutson but it's April 30th so who knows...

This could very well be the lineup, but holy cow if it is we better be adjusting the way we play. Campbell is the only guy who can shoot a three with any regularity in that starting five. I think Weisbrod and Pock should be able to shoot it as well, but I do think the more I look at this roster we need a shooter and a ball handler. If we have two rides that we are actually going to use, please go do that.

Weisbrod shot 40% from 3 last year (okay, 39.7 the exact same as Campbell last year). How much a D1 move impacts that is TBD but he can shoot (also 82% from the line)
                Schweiger is at 35%?
                Campbell is career 35.5%ish
Bond didn't shoot 3s at UVA or in HS but combining his senior year in HS and freshman year at UVA he's 50% so when he does he's capable
Pock isn't going to stay at 29%. I was shocked to see it was that low. Kid has a stroke and it is going to jump moving forward.

Yes, another shooter and/or ball handler is always going to be good. I hope the staff can grab them.

Ironically, do you know who would be perfect for the roster this year and probably flash back to younger/productive times? Bowen. He wouldn't have to fight for shots and hunt as much. There is enough out there around him that he could become more of a set/floater guy again. But, oh well. Hope he finds happiness wherever he lands.

Similar note - this is going to be the biggest rotation we've seen since te 14/15 season, and probably as big/larger than the 16 team.

                Tut 6'8
                Buss 6'9
                Paul 6'6
                J Mo 6'5
                Wes 6'4
                Deon 6'1

                Kwadzo was like 6'2
Ali was 6' on a good day
Johnny was 6'2 on a good day
                Adam was 6'8
                Jordan was 7'

Right now we are looking at
                RJ 5'11
                Trey 6'4
                Bond 6'5
                Ty 6'6
                Hutson 6'11

                Hornseth 6'8
                Rubin 6'8
                Pock 6'6
                Schweiger 6'5
                Weisbrod 6'4
                Plus 2 more possible additions

I really think we see the Valley slow down this year, as has already been discussed. Look what what McCollum is doing at D+, granted their fans are more anxious about the roster he is building than we are right now. Their current roster, including walk-ons, right now is:
                6'8'
                6'10
                6'9
                6'6
                6'6
                6'4
                6'2

Put that with a coach who plays at speed that makes old-school Jake, and UVa, look like VMI, WKU, Bryant, Samford, Arizona, etc. and it's clear they have no interest in using less than 26 seconds per possession.

100%. We need more scorers/shooters. That lineup posted above is not a modern lineup. You've pretty much gotta have 3-4 guys minimum on the floor that can hit 3's at all times or you are not really set up to succeed with how today's game is played.

                  • Is Bond our guy that can get to the hole and finish on a consistent basis?

To me this team needs another ball handler, and I agree with what was said about Bowen.

Yes. Really good athlete at 6'5". I included a link below to his highlight tape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAMv1ufkTWo

On that note - I'm a little surprised there hasn't been a peep about schools looking at Bowen. I saw pure speculation with Iowa, Drake and Colorado State, but I think those were the day he announced his intent to transfer and people throwing darts at where he'll end up.

                        • Born is a weird one. Like not many schools would want last year Born. Completely healthy and good. That's a completely different story

                          • I know for a fact that Bowen going in the portal was a bit of a shock to the coaches. I get him trying to push himself to a new level, but with his brother coming up, it was definitely not expected.

Yes, I was the same way. I thought for sure he'd stick around with his brother coming here next year - plus throw in having a down year last year, it's just kind of odd all around.

                              • Lu'Cye Patterson of Charlotte, formerly Missouri State, is in the portal. Short, stocky ballhandler that put up 15 pts and had a very good A:TO last year while shooting 35% from 3. We also recruited him out of high school.

He's literally the perfect piece to finish this class.
