Re: How do we get rid of Jake?

Oh Baby - Has anyone ever put together a short documentary that shows what a week in the life of Panther Basketball is all about. I think it would be very interesting, practice, meetings, travel, etc..... Possibly aired on CFU or the net. Perhaps that would build some more local support.

I am also interested to know what the athletic dept and baskeball staff thinks of the low turn out at BB games. Are they concerned about the student turn out in particular.

Thanks for sticking up for coach Jake, I think he is a class act and very good coach that will only get better with age.

See you in St. Louis on Friday!

Anyone who says our coach is unprepared is flat out lying.

oh baby you stated that The game planning for the most part game in and game out is solid and is a plan that if executed gives UNI the best chance to win and that is what a game plan is all about.

        honest questions

if the game plans are so great then why do we not win more games?

Also is passing it around the perimeter and shooting a three at the last second part of the game plan?

There are only very few parts to the equation.....

Proper Game Plan and Player Execution

Example: I'm sure Eric Magini of the NY Jets did not draw up the game plan for Favre to throw 3 ints last game.......?

The only other intangible is Game Coaching, and if your Player Execution is poor then you are trying like hell to push the right buttons to get the boys that will execute....

Some of you guys forget these Players are Human, they are not perfect, they will miss shots, forget to box out, turn the ball over.....all the time playing as hard as they possibly can.......

No sure "flat out lying" is the right phraseology...I think a phrase with the word "imbecile" fits better- "Anyone who thinks our coach is unprepared is an imbecile." - regardless, your meaning is right on track!

Oh Baby ILTT- I couldn't agree more with your post (Coachdags too)...I typically hold my tongue when it comes to threads like this, because there is really nothing I can add that will make a difference, but you can...you have a deeper understanding of the game than any of us can relate to. Understanding the ins and out, seeing day to day operations, and just plain being around the game is what you have. See, I think there are people in this world that aren't happy unless they're complaining about something. It's too bad they can just enjoy the game for what it is...if people don't want to come to the game until the tickets get down to $5, then don't come, because quite frankly, I'm not sure they wouldn't still be complaining. Too many people feel they are owed something, "If I am paying $25 for a ticket, they better darn well win." It's not about what you're owed, but rather what you experience. How about looking for a plausible solution...firing the coach is absurd, but coming to games and cheering on the team and sharing time with family and friends does help. It sets a tone the players, coaches, and fans need to see. Talking about the tough times, missed shots, and loses in a positive light does make a difference...cutting down the coach and organization does nothing but promote more negativism. It's a cancer that's hard to kill. There's no doubt our players visit this site and read the stuff posted here...it doesn't help anything! Just my two cents...(okay maybe five cents). Anyway, I always appreciate the positive posts, especially from someone who knows what they are taking about.

Oh...for the record, I have my tickets for the MVC tourney and my hotel (team hotel of course)...I didn't bother getting a room for Thursday, because the UNI Panthers aren't playing until Friday! Go Cats!

              Deke3-

You spoke alot of truth in your post. Probably more than you realize. I have similar sentiments about alot of your content.

I too have my tickets...got Thursday night reservations though...I want to watch as much Valley basketball as possible!
The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice, clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him, and consumes his foes on every side; His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles; the mountains melt like wax before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness and all peoples will see His glory.

As a former coach, I know that a team can execute the proper game plan and still lose to a better team.

I know that you can do everything you want to do in a basketball game and have the ball not bounce your way.
Not saying that is the entire equation at all, but you play the percentages, the better you plan, the better you prepare, the better you execute.

I do believe that the better prepared team has a better chance of wining, but like you pointed out, things like Talent, Skill, Size, Speed, and Luck will all come into play.

I can not believe, I'm posting in a thread with this title....? Because alot of the posters here do not understand how hard it is to win, and then when we do, it never seems to be enough.

Williebat....fair question and I will give you my thoughts......Lets not forget that the other team has a "game plan" also to try and beat you! Part of a teams game plan is how they are going to defend certain teams and players. I am not just talking about deciding if the best defense is man to man or zone or a gimmick defense like a triangle and two but also how to guard certain players. Do you double down on certain players, do you deny the ball to certain guys, do you sag off some players from the perimeter and stay up on others and take away the three. Also, does a player like to go right alot and you want to make him go left or one guy is really good coming off screens so do you switch all screens or don't switch on screens, do you switch on screens on the ball or not. All of that is just the basics of some of the things that go into the defensive game plan. Now, remember the other team is preparing to be able to score off some of your possible defensive game plans. ( This is just some of the defensive things that go into game planning for an opponent and there is similar planning for the offensive end) The game inside the game is how well does your players consistenly execute the game plan and how well does the other team do in attacking and breaking down that game plan. Also, talent plays a part in this too. Some teams might just be more talented and that overall talent is sometimes going to prevail in the end no matter how good the game plan is. I think in that situation, when a team might just flat out be more talented than you, a good or great game plan might give you a chance to be in the game and possibly pull off the big upset!
I contend that the UNI coaching staffs, for the most part, has a solid game plan game in and game out and goes with the plan that they feel gives them the best chance to win and has the players well prepared for their opponent and then it comes down to excuting that plan and also making adjustments during the game as the opponent breaks down your defense or game plan and then factor in all the other things such as hitting shots, keeping turnovers down, rebounding, making free throws, not committing dumb fouls etc.
As far as passing it around the perimeter and then taking a three in the last seconds of the shot clock.....yes....that gets frustrating at times for all of us...but I think what happens a number of times or at least on certain possessions is the opponent defends some of the Panther plays so well that they break down and have to try and reset and by then you are down to the final 10 seconds of the possession and have to settle for a three or someone trying to create a shot in the final seconds of that particular possession. Like I said earlier, teams scout us and they try and figure out our plays and take away from us what we want to do at the offensive end and when they do it well it forces us, at times, to have to settle for what at times seems like a desperation type shot at the end of the shot clock. I think that that is happening less and less as this year rolls on and some of that is because the young guys are understanding the offense better and better and know the options or counters off the plays when the defense takes certain things away.

Hey...I certainly don't have all the answers but this is just what I have seen or learned over the years spending time at practice, shoot arounds, team meetings and 16 years of covering the games.

Oh baby, I love your enthusiasm, I wouldn't expect anything else from such a great guy. I look foward to possible sitting next to you at the casino in St. Louis.

I have said this in an earlier thread, I hope that this team proves me wrong. I would love to have this team finish in the top 6 and have a chance to watch Saturday basketball in St. Louis. I just don't see it happening. The only thing I have to add is, if this team is not "average" or "below average" at best, and coach Jake is "so prepared" why are we 7-6 with a home losses already to a poor Indiana State team and a for the most part poor Iowa State team, and have a terrible loss to a not good Iowa team with their best player out?

It should be no surprise to most that have read my posts over the years on this board that I am a negative person, I hope you can all deal with that in your own way. Also please understand that without negative posts, the positive posts would be pointless, there fore our board would almost be non-existent.

I am not saying that "jegbomb is the straw that stirs the drink" I am just saying this is a discussion board, if everyone just sits around saying "uh huh" and "couldn't agree with you more" this would be a ghost town.

Jegbomb52.....I respect your opinion on everything you post on here and you do keep it interesting and make alot of people think and sometimes think "outside the box" but I felt your statement of Jake being a terrible coach and unprepared needed a response because I just don't agree with that opinion at all. Jake was such a huge part of the success of three NCAA teams and I saw first hand all the work he did behind the scenes to prepare Coach Mac's teams back then and he is doing similar things now we just haven't had the "luck" that sometimes goes with a trip to the big dance. Why are we 7-6 are not more like 9-4 or 10-3, a combination of everything I talked about earlier on why teams win and lose. There could have been some adjustments, personal moves, game plan adjustments etc by the coaching staff and the players certainly made their share of mistakes. It is a team deal, UNI mens basketball wins as a team and loses as a team and that includes players and coaches. I believe the game plan for all games has been very good but who thought Brackins would go off for 32 or 38 or whatever the heck he did for Iowa State and should UNI have tried something different on him hindsight would say yes but we had taken the 3 away from them and that was huge! If you double down on Brackins it opens up the 3 point shot and who knows how many uncontested 3's the Clones would have made with that adjustment. Did the team play a poor 1st half against Indiana State, certainly, and if anyone knows why teams do that they could be an instant millionaire because every coach in the country would want that information.

I don't think that Jake's coaching style is really any different than Mac's was. We do have talent, maybe more than Mac had, but after Mac's teams passed it around waiting for the clock to run out they were able to get the ball to Benny and he would create something on his own which made it all worth while. We still run the same style offense but without this piece we are forced to put a desperation shot with time running out, not near as much fun to watch.

Your right, just phrased wrong. Jake WAS a great assistant coach, he is NOW a young, good, up and coming Head Coach and don't be surprised if he turns out to be a great head coach before it is all said and done. It seems to me that alot of people forget that Jake is only in his third year as a head coach of a basketball team at any level and it takes time to learn the "trade" of being a head coach, some have great success sooner than others but Jake has a chance to become a great coach, lets continue to support him in his quest to become that!!! Also, don't forget UNI's most successful mens basketball coach, Coach Mac, had alot of head coaching experience before he came to UNI and had his struggles his first two years at UNI before that great three year run to the NCAA's.

All Good points Oh Baby....The other thing that seems to go unmentioned is that Mac and Jake were a great team. That all changed the instant Mac left for ISU; I don't think assistant coaches get enough of the credit. I sure get the sense that Mac could use Jake in Ames. It's going to take time to get that kind of chemistry back with Jake's current staff. I think it was unrealistic to expect the same results, regarless of who took the reins. I am very happy that the level talent coming from the recruiting trail seems to be there. That was the biggest concern I had when Mac left.

We also lost some pretty special players the same year Mac left.
