If freeing up a date was isu or iowas goal, they should/could have just told drake to gtfo.

Your use of the word "gift" is what's pushing them over the top. You're as over the top the other way in your defense of Iowa using words like that. Playing a home and home vs. an in-state, Division I , postseason tournament regular, team that beats you as much as you beat them is not a "gift". To say that implies that they are not equals on the court, and that is clearly a joke, especially considering the beatdown in Cedar Falls this year.

Although I agree that something is better than nothing, the only way this could be worse is if Dannen agreed to a road only deal at Carver and Hilton - everyone with an ounce of sense knows that Iowa and ISU consider this to be a home away from home game for them, given their fan base in the area. Of course they don't care that Drake's in Des Moines, because they suck and haven't beaten either team regularly. It gets us out of our backyard.

I personally would have rather seen UNI play another "BCS conference" school (hate that term, since the BCS is only in football) on the road than this thing under the guise of "neutral". How about a trip to Wisky? A date at Williams against Tubby's Gophers? I would much rather see that than Iowa and ISU pretending this is a "neutral" site. Would help our RPI more at the end of the year anyway, in most cases.
Give us a yell, HO! The purple and the gold
      Victory for U-N-I!

Find out what the other team wants to do, then take it away from them.

This is 100x worse than a home/home setup, but 100x better than dropping the series.

Part of me wishes Dannen would have gone off to the press about how Iowa and ISU are too scared to play UNI given the recent success, but he is thinking with his head (and checkbook), not his heart, which is a good thing IMO.

But, if Dannen decided to play hard ball and call Pollard/Barta out, the DSM register would have eaten it up. They look for any reason to take a dig at the Hawks. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if some national media outlets picked up the story.

As for Northern Iowa, it won’t play on the road at either Iowa or Iowa State when it’s not playing in Des Moines.
“We’re not interested in that,” Dannen said. “We’re going to continue to pursue some home-and-homes with power conference schools. We’re negotiating with a Big 12 school right now. We’re going to continue to try and find those opportunities.

The loss of home-and-home deals with Iowa State and Iowa comes at a time when the Panthers are enjoying unprecedented success. Northern Iowa beat both Iowa and Iowa State last season. The Panthers have defeated Iowa State in six of the last eight meetings, and defeated Iowa in four of the last seven meetings.

“We’ll have to continue to treasure the fact that we were the last true state champion,” Dannen said.

I wish Dannen would speak up about this openly and honestly, not the "politically correct" answers he's been giving. Similar to how I wish Ben Allen would step up to the podium and take the state legislators to task over the funding issues at UNI. Until someone speaks up on campus, these things are going to keep happening.

I also feel like Barta and possibly Fran see this as a short-term solution until something bigger happens and they don't have to even consider scheduling UNI anymore. Here is an interesting read on what that "bigger" opportunity may be.

scared? in the past ten years UNI is a whopping 5-5 versus iowa (a stretch where iowa was historically awful and UNI historically good) and Drake is a 3-7 versus iowa.

I imagine there will be a UNI section and the $75 will be for prime seats. I realize this could mean more $ for UNI and that's great, but I hate that I already pay for my season tickets and have great seats. Now I have to shell out another $75 to probably get the equivalent seating as I'd get in the McLeod. That's $75 per ticket!! Will there be child prices? I can't see paying a minimum of $25 per ticket for all 4 of us - $100 plus the ridiculous price of food/drinks. Now I realize the ticket is for both games, but still. An entire afternoon or evening - 5 hours most likely - at the Well means you have to buy some food. If prices are like they were at the state basketball tournament, I'll need a second mortgage on the house just to pay for one night of basketball.
Panther Chic, I love your posts and your passion for UNI, but this is the sort of attitude that hurts UNI. I assure you there are plenty of Iowa and ISU fans in Des Moines that will see this as a great opportunity to see their teams without driving to Ames or Iowa City. And they will have no problem plunking down the cash for the kids and the food and the beer for this event. Iowa and ISU fans are saying, heck yes, let's party! UNI fans say, wow that's a lot of money. Concerts at Wells Fargo, shows at the Civic Center, more than one I-Cubs game a month, a night on Court Ave., dinner at Centro, etc, these prices are very much in line with costs here. Iowa and ISU fans will no qualms about buying these tickets. We go to the Iowa Irish festival in Waterloo in August and laugh about the pricing of things. Very inexpensive compared to Des Moines. Start saving.

Right...just interesting to think about it. What next, they will decide that schools in only 1 of 6 conferences can win a national championship in football.

It doesn't matter if it's true or not, the timing makes it the best headline, had Dannen decided to go down this road.

Everyone knows Iowa looks like a scared bully in this whole situation, and Dannen had a chance to really exploit this perception.
