Playing a home and home vs. an in-state, Division I , postseason tournament regular, team that beats you as much as you beat them is not a "gift". To say that implies that they are not equals on the court, and that is clearly a joke, especially considering the beatdown in Cedar Falls this year.

Although I agree that something is better than nothing, the only way this could be worse is if Dannen agreed to a road only deal at Carver and Hilton - everyone with an ounce of sense knows that Iowa and ISU consider this to be a home away from home game for them, given their fan base in the area. Of course they don't care that Drake's in Des Moines, because they suck and haven't beaten either team regularly. It gets us out of our backyard.

I personally would have rather seen UNI play another "BCS conference" school (hate that term, since the BCS is only in football) on the road than this thing under the guise of "neutral". How about a trip to Wisky? A date at Williams against Tubby's Gophers? I would much rather see that than Iowa and ISU pretending this is a "neutral" site. Would help our RPI more at the end of the year anyway, in most cases.
It has nothing to do with being competitive equals, it has to do with who needs whom more, and we all know that we need these games more than they do. They, therefore, have the power and can do as they please.

We all would love home and home games with major conference teams. TD has already said, very clearly, that Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc, aren't interested. From time-to-time, we have to face some reality.

It has nothing to do with that. Playing the instate games is fun, kind of the point of watching sports in the first place. I want to have as many fun games on the schedule as possible.

ISU has played Drake every year since 1920. Frankly the game barely moves the needle on my excitement meter but I thought college sports were about tradition? Oh wait, not even I'm naive enough to believe that.

Actually this isn't true. Drake has absolutely had ISU's number lately to an embarrassing degree.

Revenue-wise, I do think this will be a net win for each school to a really solid degree. They had an Iowa Events Center guy on the radio this morning on KXNO. He said the average ticket price will be $50. Let’s say they sell 15k tickets to this thing (I think we hit that easy, especially considering we’re looking at all session tix.) We’re looking at 187,500 for each school.

Now I have a lot of personal complaints about this thing, but that will be good. And it appears that since the primary purpose of each AD is squeezing as much blood from the turnip as possible they will consider it a net win.

I will say they had Dannen on the radio yesterday and he said they were planning on doing a bunch of other school promos and stuff in the arena and other things, and they are looking at tons of advertising opportunities. It may encourage other Panther fans to hit up a game and may get them interested in the PSC, which I’ve seen mentioned on this board as not having a lot of representation in Des Moines.

I work with a couple of young UNI grads and while they aren’t the biggest fans in the world they definitely still follow the team, albeit not that closely. I think having a big event can be beneficial to maybe drawing these fans back in that aren’t totally engaged. That being said, as I said previously I think the format of the event sucks and I hope they make big changes in 2013.

At least make it an actual tournament... I guess that's a major complaint about this new structure (outside of the fact that I completely dislike it).

I agree with you, if they can find a sponsor who will shell out the money for the arena rental, referees, and other expenses. Then the 4 universities will get a good lump sum of cash for playing there. I am betting this event sells out pretty fast. Plus I believe they said their gonna have some promotions and a kids area with games and what not. So I believe each school will get good lump sum of cash, which won't hurt any of them. What is UNI's normal revenue intake for a home game? I mean after you minus the referee pay, and other expenses. Just curious I do not know? Anyway I believe that both games next year going to be very good tight games. The place could sell out.

First I'd like to see them have something like a 2 hour break between the games so they can sell tickets to both games. Better chance to get good seats to watch our teams. Do I think it will happen? No, I don’t, because I think they’d rather sell 15k all session tickets rather than 10k seats to each game, even though it’s dumb to have all-session tickets because a great many fans won’t stay for both games. They would probably be more likely to call the event a huge success if they can call it a true sellout as opposed to not selling out for two games, regardless of the butts in the seats.

I’d like to see both teams flip flop and play the other on Saturday and Sunday. Yeah back to back games suck but pretty much every school does it at some point with a non-exempt tourney.

Both are unlikely, but both would be an improvement IMO.

Frankly I’m probably going to be looking for a Panther fan who is interested in splitting some 75 dollar ticket with an ISU fan. 150 bucks is way too much to spend on one game for my wife and I (heck our season tickets cost 200!) but 75 is reasonable. There will probably be a lot of Panther fans that don’t care to come super early to watch ISU/Drake so we could work something out. If I’m going to this thing I’d prefer not to be in the nosebleeds. I’ll probably pop back later this year before they go on sale to see if I can work something out with somebody on this board.

Let me clarify my earlier post, as I was supremly disappointed with Mr. Dannen, however after reading his comments I would agree that it sounds like Iowa more like Barta and with some help from Pollard wanted to take their balls and go home, but they "felt' obligated to continue playing us. I understand Mr. Dannen was put between a rock and a hard place, and I may have been a little harsh on Mr. Dannen, however I believe that we should begin to look elsewhere for other options and if Iowa and Iowa State want to play us then a Home-Home contract needs signed. I am curious that since Iowa and Iowa State want to have a game in Des Moines so badly, why not play their game in Des Moines? Kind of if they threw a party and the only two to show was Iowa and Iowa State? I digress, I think we need to move on, and either play us home-home or not at all. Guess that's my feeling.

I know 20 years ago iowa fans asked every year why they had to play us when they were beating the snot out of us every year, and they kept it up I guess as a favor to UNI. So we should to as a favor to them, give them a shot at being semi-relevant in something besides football.
Oh, and let me make this perfectly clear to you people: you go to UNI, NOT IOWA. The Hawkeyes and their fans do not give a crap if you remain "true to them" or some stupid self-fulfulling bullcrap like that.-OTP

The two-hour break serves no purpose. So then everyone has to exit the crowded parking lot and come back. By the time you got out of there it would be time to come back again. It's a nightmare around the well when they're are people trying to come in and out of the parking lot. I've worked there for years and I've dealt with it before. And for the Arena as well as the staff what good does the break accomplish?

I'd also like to see it as a two-day event. It would be like Arch Madness in Des Moines. Just need a catchy nickname

You're assuming fans for the other schools stay and watch both games. I'm guessing we see 20% retention tops either way.
