Anytime a team had the ball with under about 1:15 they tried to hold for the last shot. When you consider they play 4 quarters that’s up to 5 minutes of game time. In the Dubuque Waukee game, Dubuque won the tip in OT and they appeared they were going to be content dribbling out the full 4 minute OT waiting for one shot. They did eventually get a driving lane with about 2:30 to go. Once Waukee got down they forced more possessions by fouling and/or pressing.
Same here, and I was thinking exactly the same thing last night at Wells Fargo. Iowa HS basketball needs a shot clock. The whole game was that way, played at a very ponderous pace, trying to make the perfect pass to get the perfect wide open shot, and dribbling and passing until that happens. It’s time for Iowa High Schools to enter the modern era and institute a shot clock, because basketball is not meant to be played in a 1950s style any longer.

Couldn't agree more but expense and finding people to run the shot clock are the issues.

      • I was talking to BC about this during the Senior game last night

If it's later in the game and you have a 4 point lead it more - go full Dan Muller and foul to put them on the line. Takes away and 1 opportunities. Takes away the 3 ball.

get the ball back and just stall.

That was kind of what was going on. Waukee would cut the deficit to 1 or 2, and foul, with well over a minute left. It slowed an already slow game down considerably.

The kid does a lot of things well and he's just a gamer. And a really good athlete.
He hit 3 of 4 FTs in the closing seconds tonight as he led CF to another state title with 15 points. Named captain of the all tournament team:

              • Those 3A and 4A teams are pretty salty. Iowa gets nowhere near enough credit for how good our High School basketball is.

Not as many "blue chippers" as the other states, but a ton of good to really good D1 prospects.

                  • Does anyone know anything about the Sophomore 2A kid from the long acronym school? That he made the all state team as a Sophomore is reason to at least pay attention.

Very good athlete. Probably a DII kid in basketball and football. Kind of your 'typical' 6-foot Iowa guard that is really tough but has some holes that won't work in DI.

How do you not know that that is Odeboldt-Arthur-Battle Creek-Ida Grove?

Ahhh .... Iowa PSD consolidations. This one is a consolidation of the previously-consolidated.

"Each originally served its own town: Battle Creek to the west with about 700 residents; Ida Grove, the largest of the four, with about 2,100 people; to its east Arthur, with 200 residents; then Odebolt, with 1,000.

In 1956, Odebolt and Arthur merged, and in 1994, Battle Creek and Ida Grove did the same."

Then, O-A and BC-IG merged in 2018. I suspect they are keeping an eye on Galva-Holstein, to the north.

                        • My old school got smart when they got up to 6 towns and renamed themselves West Fork. Rolls off the tongue a little easier than SCMTRS.

In some ways I like those better than some of the stupid names they've come up with. Easton Valley? East Union? Southeast Valley? Central Springs?

                            • To be fair, I believe East Union High School is the eastern half of Union county, so that one does make geographical sense. I can't speak to the other if they have some geographical foundation or if someone just thought it sounded nice.
