I was going under the assumption that he would be a full walk on, not eventually getting a scholarship like most of the guys on that list. Though a 4-for-5 would make more sense, it'd be odd if we were giving one out so early, and with such high ambitions with our 2020 scholarships.Originally posted by Khan4Cats View Post

Would seem like an odd 4 for 5. With all the success we've had in recruiting it would be a bit disappointing to offer up that kind of offer to a kid with 0 D1 offers. The only reasons would be they think he's a hidden gem or they understand with such a big class in 20 that you have to get some role/bench players. Some kids may be turned off to going to a school with such a large class as playing time could be a concern. I would assume it's a walkon offer but you never know.

There are a lot of kids that will call the coaches and say they are coming for a visit you don’t need to be asked. And there are players that like posting they visited just for exposure and attention.Last edited by PanthersMBB; 08-21-2018, 10:39 AM.

In all seriousness why would a staff ever waist the time doing that if they wernt at least interested in a walkon opportunity? It doesn't really make sense to take the time to do that. Even if they do feel the need to keep up appearances with high school coaches and allow that would they go to the effort to put that kid in a uniform knowing they post this stuff online? Also, coach Jake retweeted his tweet of it. That would also say this is much more than a kid requesting to visit without the staff asking. Just my thoughts...Originally posted by PanthersMBB View PostThere are a lot of kids that will call the coaches and say they are coming for a visit you don’t need to be asked. I agree. I could maybe see entertaining a kid and giving him a look around, but pulling out the uniform and everything? Just seems like something they wouldn't do with just anybody.Originally posted by unipanther2154 View Post

If you view social media these days a lot of schools do this for unofficial visits and no offers. 4-5 years ago Uni and a lot of schools never had the uniform the players put on even with an official visit or when a school made an offer. Now it is done for recruiting because some recruits need that attention and All the big schools do it. So why not UNI. It is a recruiting tool that some players like. And who knows if UNI has very much interest in this player but I think we will see the recruiting tactics be more like a p5 these days. Some Players like the Glitz of the Jersey picture or to make postings on social media on how many offers they have. Every recruit is different but UNI is making the right adjustments to keep up with the bigger schools recruiting process. I love the jersey idea.Last edited by PanthersMBB; 08-21-2018, 03:21 PM.

I see no evidence it's even that. I can't find anything, anywhere, regarding any kind of offer.Originally posted by Gboom23 View PostMust be a 4 for 5?
My guess is it's a walk-on with a chance at a scholarship but nothing promised - depending how the 19 and 20 classes fill.
Basically he's as/more likely to be a walk on his entire time than a scholarship player.
No idea though.

Article with quotes now out -
Walk on with maybe earning a scholarship in a few years if he earns is....which basically means it's dependent on how 19 and 20 fill out and if there is one left and/or he becomes a walk on that can't be kept off the court due to production

CEDAR RAPIDS — Derek Krogmann could have waded through some Division II offers. He could have waited, pun intended, let things play out and see if a Division I school would offer a scholarship.
But the West Delaware senior didn’t want to do that. When his dream school said it wanted him, even as a walk-on, that was enough to end his college basketball recruiting process.
Krogmann announced Wednesday he will play college hoops at Northern Iowa as a preferred walk-on. The 6-foot-7 all-stater averaged a double-double of 20.7 points and 12.4 reebounds per game last season.
“It’s something I’ve thought about for awhile,” Krogmann said. “Just the fact that it’s always what I’ve wanted to be and being given an opportunity to take that, I couldn’t pass it down ... They’ve got a great coaching staff that has had a lot of success. To have that success with mostly Iowa guys is really cool. I’m excited to be a part of the program.”
Krogmann is left-handed, which is always a plus, but is considered to have strictly an inside game at this point. Thus, his scholarship offers have come from D-II schools, though D-I programs like Furman and Lehigh had shown recent interest, according to West Delaware Coach Matt Uthoff.
UNI obviously sees potential. Uthoff said it had been in constant contact with Krogmann since June, Krogmann visited campus recently and was offered the chance to walk-on, with the promise of a scholarship eventually if he produces.
That was too much for him to pass up.
“I just need to continue to stretch out my game,” he said. “Score away from the basket, create my own shot. When you’re going against grown men, you’ve got to get bigger and stronger as well.”

Sounds like the kid is up for the challenge and understands how he needs to develop his game to play D1.
Interesting how these kids are getting excited about playing with a team that largely Iowa talent.
Winning is more fun than losing.

Know what I love seeing? I love seeing Tytan congratulating him on Twitter right away. They've probably only met once or twice, and won't be teammates for another 2 years, but he's all about it. That's awesome. He's already acting as an ambassador for the team, and he's a junior in high school.
