Based on the high school stats 4 out of the 5 recruits will fit right in with this year’s three point shooting team. And 3 of them need help at the free throw line. Not sure if our shooting will improve next year

We don't need Henry to shoot 3's. We need him to be active and athletic at the post...and to pass the ball like a former post player we had a few years back who now wears a tie on the bench. Not as good a shooter but more athletic that ST...and we clearly need that.
Gauger has a mid range game we haven't seen since Benny Jacobsen. Not saying it's the same...but it's real good.
Krogmann will give us a banger inside we haven't seen since O'Rear. Remember how valuable LO was without scoring.
Carter has shot 48% from 3 in back to back seasons.
Winning is more fun than losing.

Maybe finally having a class that isn't loaded with guys who think they need to shoot the 3 10 times a game, get talked about how good of a shooter they are to shoot 34% for their career when they are literally only on the court because they are marketed as a 3 point specialist
In general I agree with Mudra's thoughts. If we are talking about the kind of on-court, in game, benefit that walk-ons will give us then...we need to rethink everything. If these walk-ons (that can't shoot) are beating out scholarship players for playing time then everything is broken and we need a full 100% reset.
Lincoln is a walk-on that averaged 19-9 as a senior in class 4A. Was named to multiple All State teams at class 4A. First team All Conference in class 4A as a junior and Senior. Lincoln was every bit the HS player - actually a hell of a lot better all around - that Krogmann is. I'd bet if he played in 3A at a place where he was the start (ala Gauger) he'd have even better stats than he did at West - and probably at a minimum on par with Gauger.
How many minutes is Lincoln seeing? He's appeared in 18 games in 2.5 seasons averaging 2.3 minutes per game, .8 shots per game. If we look at MVC games (meaning we are talking the non D1 games out) he has 8 games played, and .6 shots per game
They may contribute like crazy in practice and be a vital member of the team in ways we don't directly see on game days, but if walk-ons are needing to contribute meaningful minutes on game days we are even worse than we look.

Agreed that talking about walk-ons is pointless. Although it does appear we have good ones with at least some D1 offers/interest.Originally posted by Mudrafan View Post

But what do you mean its not the class we needed? One of our big problems is we have no competent post game without Phyfe. Hopefully Phyfe is that guy like I think he can be but its also possible he never plays again. Maybe Biggie can help consistently but it is too early to tell IMO. So we have a class with three guys in the 3/4 range with Henry, Betz,& Carter. If those guys can't help and make us better then that is bad recruiting but it is what we needed.
You can win with guards of AJ, Berhow, a healthy Pickford, Brown, Croft, Haldeman in the MVC. If not it is time to blow up the whole thing.

Noah Carter's inside/outside game not valuable to you guys either cuz he's only 6'5"?
Or James Betz size and athleticism not gonna translate cuz he played at a small school in North Iowa?
What other ways can u boys find to soak this class in your negative s***?
Any of you guys ever actually seen Gauger play? Guessing not. You're gonna like his game.Last edited by Blue42; 01-08-2019, 08:49 AM.Winning is more fun than losing.

Outside of saying if walk-ons are being forced to contribute over scholarship guys we are in trouble - WHICH ISN'T ****ING WRONG...WE DIDN'T SIGN ZION WILLIAMSON AS A WALK ON - not a single bad thing has been said about the class. If you'd have paid attention at all in the thread it was clear people are very excited about the potential of the class.
It is concerning though, that outside of the paint this class shoots about 30% from the floor. I don't have shot charts for anyone, but based on the fact the 5 are a combined 45-140 from 3 (32%) and 178-291 (61%) from the FT line it would seem there isn't a lot of offense, or shot making ability, from outside of the circle area for anyone except Carter.
That may not be a bad thing. Betz and Henry could give us a more solid post presence to go with Phyfe.
This might be the most athletic class we've seen. Betz and Henry are stupid athletic. However, Henry shooting 34% from the FT line is okay to be concerned about. The fact he hasn't hit 1 3 pointer is worth being concerned about. It's also worth nothing that Henry's shooting has actually gotten markedly worse from last year. As a junior - which was already not good - he was 9-30 from 3 (30%) and 48-90 from the FT line (54%). As a sophomore he was 9-33 (27.3%) and 63-104 from the line (60%). It's worth asking why instead of getting better as a shooter, as you'd expect for someone that is a D1 caliber basketball player and athlete - he's gotten SIGNIFICANTLY worse. He won't be on the court at crunch time if he is shooting 30% from the FT line and call it 10% from 3. He won't be able to be trusted because that's worse than Lucas O'Rear was on offense and it isn't close.
It's okay to ask that. It's okay to wonder what Jake thinks he can do to turn that around.
Wondering those things is possible at the same time as being excited for the things the kids do well on the court.

I will say as never seeing Betz play unlike Carter and Henry, I really hope you all are right on him, HS numbers can be pointless but you would really expect an athletic 6'7" D1 basketball player to put up bigger numbers in small school Iowa basketball. Carter on the other hand is putting up huge numbers in the toughest conference in the state. Again, just numbers but an observation,

Betz is the only player with a pulse on his team and he's constantly triple teamed whenever he touches the ball. Couple that with his HS coach not appearing to have a clue as to how to get him any space and it's actually pretty amazing that he's doing what he's doing. He got them to a substrate final last year playing 1 on 5 all the way through. This year there's another kid that can at least shoot so he might get them to the states tournament.Originally posted by DownGoesKansas View PostI will say as never seeing Betz play unlike Carter and Henry, I really hope you all are right on him, HS numbers can be pointless but you would really expect an athletic 6'7" D1 basketball player to put up bigger numbers in small school Iowa basketball. Last time I checked, 3/4 guys weren’t posts. And even when we have them, we don’t seem to play them anywayOriginally posted by DownGoesKansas View Post

It's becoming a positionless game where all the guys on the floor have guard skills. I don't disagree that having a big that can work the high post is an advantage and that's exactly what Henry is.
McDonnell and Dahl aren't effective at times because they can't step away from the bucket and pass the ball. Fayne has become a better offensive player because he can pull you away from the bucket and then use his quickness to get to the rim and he's also a very good passer. It's also where Krutwig's game is going to stagnate unless he drops some weight and gains some quickness.
It's totally cyclical but there aren't any back to the basket posts right now. Jake certainly isn't out of the mainstream right now.

And yes he is not a true center but Jake has made it clear over the years he prefers/trusts a player like A. Koch/O'Rear/Tuttle over a guy like Egleseder.
And finally, good luck finding a true center who will come in and make an impact right away at this level. That is why we take flyers on guys like Dahl. There is a reason when it is transfer season every P5 team fan base is saying "We need a post"/"We need a PG".

And Fayne is better because he can take and MAKE shots within 8 feet of the bucket.Originally posted by BCPanther View Post...

I played, had sons that played, have all kinds of relation and friends that coach and I have always watched a ton but that’s here nor there. I believe you need a true post and that’s always been called a 5. As always, I’m allowed my opinion and you have yours. Carry on.Originally posted by BCPanther View Post
